~Rotary International President -Gary C. K. Huang

November is Rotary Foundation Month. This month, we reflect on our giving to the Rotary Foundation with our eyes fixed not only on the present but also to meet the challenges of the future. The Rotary Foundation transforms your gifts into projects that change lives in our communities. A big thank you to all who have given to the Foundation in the past few months with many Rotarians taking up the District Governors PHF Challenge by giving $500 for matching to become a Paul Harris Fellow for the first time or a multiple PHF. Others have given in recognition of others they deemed worthy of the PHF title for their exemplary performance in their Rotary work. The challenge has since ended with our target number of 100 PHFs but we have exceeded to 200 PHFs. Thank you to the new major donors in our district. Your giving will change more lives in our community for whom we have a responsibility.

District Governor’s Diary Join me at Muthaiga Golf Club for an extraordinary TRF Dinner on 21st November 2014 at 6.30 pm. It will be an excellent celebration for us as Rotary Family.

~DG- Bimal Kantaria

All our contributions go to TRF and in return we get grants. Global grants empower Rotarians to approach challenges such as poverty, illiteracy, and malnutrition with sustainable solutions that leave a lasting impact. I have immeasurable joy as I continue to enjoy support from all Rotarians across the District. The Polio awareness drives have left such a huge impact with Rotary clubs working

together for a common course. The Vocational Biz Dating Cocktail in Mombasa was also a huge success and the event brought Coast Rotarians and prospective Rotarians together. Many thanks to all leaders who took their time to organize the successful events. The third month into my club visits has brought much joy and unprecedented happiness in my volunteer life in Rotary. I am in the last stages of the official District Club visits and I commend all Rotary clubs for good preparations way ahead of time. Great unity and participation are evident through the club boards which makes my work a lot easier and more enjoyable. I have had great moments catching up with enthused club members. We are better together! My visits to the Coast and Western Zones in the last 2 months have been phenomenal. My experiences on the ground as I visited each club was just amazing. The zeal in practising the motto of service above self by Rotarians out there is astounding! The good news is that we have 9 Rotary clubs in formation and 5 already chartered within this year. We have 5 new interact clubs. I request your support to the charter presidents as they find their footing in the Rotary Family. Encourage potential members to join the clubs in formation near them. As is our tradition as Rotarians, let us offer new members the fellowship they so deserve from our hearts. Remember, you have a duty to let someone know what we do and how they too can join us in the noble cause. Our Rotary Foundation dinner is here with us. I invite you all my Rotary brothers and sisters to join me for this extraordinary family dinner on 21st November 2014 at Muthaiga Country Club from 6.30pm. This will be an excellent celebration time for us as a family, even as we ponder over our Foundation responsibilities. Grab your dinner ticket early and see you there! From my wife Hiral and I, Have a sure Foundation month!

This is the Rotary Foundation Month and it only comes round once in the Rotary Calendar. Sharing our resources is not always the easiest thing to do in life. Amazingly, Rotarians give so easily, and I believe it is because they always give for a reason. Seeing communities change in one’s lifetime is also a cool thing when one is involved. Rotarians also cite accountability as another reason they give back to the society through Rotary.

The Rotary Foundation hold Hands with Aga Khan University Training Nurses to Curb Maternal & Infant Mortality at the Horn of Africa According to research, about 360 women die in every 100 000 births in Kenya. Only 44% of Kenyan women give birth in the presence of skilled birth attendants who are able to detect and address complications. In some parts of the country most expectant mothers are attended to by traditional birth attendants while some attend to themselves during birth. Causes of maternal deaths are well known, they range from hypertension, haemorrhage, HIV and complications of unsafe abortion among others. Other Challenges in curbing maternal mortality include poverty, inadequate infrastructure, illiteracy and religious beliefs. “ ROTARIANS ARE DOING SOMETHING ABOUT IT in our own small way and we hope to make a difference. Through Rotary Foundation, Clubs are equipping hospitals, offering scholarships at club level and creating awareness among women, girls and opinion leaders at the grassroots. We are doing all we can to stop avoidable maternal and infant deaths,” said DG Bimal Kantaria during an interview in Nairobi. Shockingly, statistics reveal that over 10% of girls aged between 15 to 19 give birth in Kenya. Early child marriages and female genital mutilation, which are rampant in rural Kenya, also increase girls’ risk of maternal death With less than 500 days left to achieve Millennium Development Goal 5, the global goal of reducing maternal deaths by three-quarters and providing universal access to reproductive health by 2015, Rotary is keen to add her voice to this disturbing conversation. Improving maternal health is one of the UN’s eight Millennium Development Goals. To address this challenge, THE ROTARY FOUNDATION AND THE AGA KHAN UNIVERSITY (AKU) have beefed up their efforts to address these pressing needs in support of the Government’s efforts. The aim is to provide nursing professionals, the skills and education they need to improve the lives of mothers and their children. “Rotary Foundation and AKU is offering scholarships to nursing students whose career goals are focused on improving child and maternal health issues. The scholarships go up to $14,000 per student,” DG Bimal Kantaria asserted. Students work and participate in community outreaches during the 2 year program. The students also receive mentorship as part of their program to enhance their people skills. 8

Global Grants Global grants support large international activities with sustainable, measurable outcomes in Rotary’s areas of focus. Grant sponsors form international partnerships that respond to real community needs.

s t

What they support

Global grants can fund these activities: • Humanitarian projects. • Scholarships for graduate-level academic studies. • Vocational training teams, which are groups of professionals who travel abroad either to teach local professionals about a particular field or to learn more about their own.

How to use them

A key feature of global grants is partnership between the district or club where the activity is carried out and a district or club in another country. Both sponsors must be qualified before they can submit an application. To be successful, your application must: • Be sustainable and include plans for long-term success after the global grant funds have been spent. • Include measurable goals. • Align with one of our areas of focus. • Respond to real community needs. • Actively involve Rotarians and community members. • Meet the eligibility requirements in the grants terms & conditions.

Rotary Foundation: Where giving is Receiving a Hundredfold In the previous Rotary Year 2013/14, Rotary Clubs in Kenya received USD 7.2 million (Kshs. 630 Million) in funding from Rotary International. The money went into various service projects across the country executed by over 60 Rotary Clubs. Speaking when he made his official visit to the Rotary Club of Nairobi, the Rotary International District 9212 Governor, Bimal Kantaria challenged Rotarians to give more to the Rotary Foundation whose beginnings date back to 1917 when the then Rotary International President Arch Klumph invested into a fixed deposit account USD 26.50 profit made from that year’s Rotary International Convention. Since then, the Rotary Foundation has financed numerous humanitarian projects across the globe with its major contribution and gift to humanity being an aggressive End Polio Campaign that has seen over USD 1.2 billion being given by Rotary Foundation towards the development and administration of the Polio vaccine worldwide. Kenya is one of the beneficiaries of this gift to humanity from the Rotary Foundation.

Whether a Rotarian or not, giving a gift of USD 1000 earns you a membership into the Paul Harris Fellowship and you can give several times making you a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow. When you hit the USD 10000 mark, you are recognized as a Major Donor and with a gift of over USD 300,000, you become an Arch Klumph Society member. Past District Governor, Dr. Yusuf Dawood Kodwavwalla, a man who many attribute to as the reason they joined Rotary and also personal Rotary Mentor to DG Bimal, famous for his Surgeon’s Diary columns which appear in the Sunday Nation newspaper, became the third African to join the Arch Klumph Society and is a long serving member of the Rotary Club of Nairobi. At the DG’s official club visit, PDG Yusuf was requested to honor the recent Paul Harris Fellows in the club, some first time PHFs and others multiple PHFs led by the club’s 84th President, Kamal Sanghani. With DG Bimal’s 2014/15 challenge, the first two and a half months of the Rotary Year have seen over 100 Rotarians contribute and

become Paul Harris Fellows. The DG’s initial offer of matching USD 500 for the first 100 Rotarians to become PHFs has been exhausted and he pledged another 100 more, an offer that has been taken by many more Rotarians and is almost exhausted too. The money given to the Foundation is invested and comes back many times more into the country of origin through global grants and finances service projects. The DG congratulated the Rotary Club of Nairobi, being the oldest club in the region and third oldest in Africa, for the numerous service projects it has undertaken in various communities across the country as far as Turkana on the North Western tip of the country. Its latest achievement is the Cataract Eye Camps that have restored sight to over 16,000 patients with 100,000 blind patients still waiting for their operations.

Rotary Club of Nairobi carried out 1006 cataract operations in one year making the club the title holder of “World Highest Cataract Operations carried out by any Rotary Club.” This year the target is to carry out 1200 cataract operations in four different locations in Kenya. The project is led by cataract operation expert Dr. Mukesh Joshi. With such pressing humanitarian needs as 100,000 patients waiting for their cataract operations, President Kamal has the uphill task of ensuring more of his club members give to the Rotary Foundation. It is perhaps the only foundation in the world where by giving, you get back what you gave hundredfold to carry out your Rotary Club’s project in your own community.

New Generations: The Future of Rotary For the 4th year running, over 200 Rotaractors in Kenya gathered at the Laico Regency Hotel New Generations Address. Every year the District 9212 Governor addresses Rotaractors from across the country as a highlight of the New Generations Month. DG Bimal did not disappoint this year and neither did the Rotaractors. The District Governor encouraged and challenged the Rotaractors to join Rotary once they finished their service in Rotaract and should they feel they are not comfortable joining existing Rotary Clubs, they were free to come together and form their own Rotary Club. Rotary Kenya Country Chair Sally Gitoho, District Youth Service Director Paula Lanco and District Green Rotary Chair Dorcas Otieno also addressed the gathering making it an exciting and interactive meeting, an opportunity to be inspired and learn. A training session marked the beginning of the Rotaract Club of Kirinyaga-In formation. The Rotaract Club of Watamu has been chatered. The DG and Youth Service Chair urged the Rotaractors to plan to attend the Multi District Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) in Ethiopia at the end of November, and the District Conference in Diani. The RCC, Richard Mwangi is targeting a delegation of 30 Rotaractors from Kenya to travel to Ethiopia at the RYLA. The Youth Service Chair and AG Phoebe have promised to support the cause and are requesting Rotarians and sponsoring Rotary Clubs to chip into the kitty. As more and more Rotarians and our Rotary Clubs engage our Rotaractors, we shall be guaranteeing membership for our clubs, in the future.

Concerted Synergy to Serve Rotary & Rotaract Clubs of Nairobi Muthaiga North Transforms a Village 19th September 2014: A host of 40 Rotarians, Rotaractors and Friends of Rotary was on a mission to transform the lives of many at the Ndunyu Chege Primary and Secondary Schools of Muranga County. The mission was to issue dictionaries, educational magazines, plant 600 trees, offer 800 pairs of shoes to students and make the girls healthier with a sanitary pack each containing sanitary pads for a year, 4 under wears and a health magazine to 270 girls. The Rotary Club of Muthaiga North led by their charter president Cathy Ngurani was accompanied by IPP Jane Ngugi of RC Kikuyu, DGSR Muthoni Gichohi and representatives of the Ahadi Kenya Trust. The team had earlier identified the dire needs in both schools which they tried to meet and have promised to follow up in the future. “We were approached by two of our club members to assess the situation in the 2 schools and we could not restrain ourselves. The situation is so dire that over 80 % of the girls miss school each month while some students are immobilized by jiggers” said Rtn. Ambassador Nyambura Kamau of RC Muthaiga North. A mentorship program has been set for both schools which began with class 7 & 8 for the primary school and form 1 to 4 for the secondary school. In separate demographic set ups, the Rotarians took students through group therapy and mentorship programmes. “Our joy is full. Today marks a turnaround for our schools. I am sure that what Rotary has done today will have a great impact on our performance and the lives of the students in general. I have no words to express my gratitude today,” said Mr. Njoroge the head teacher of Ndunyu Chege Primary School. During an easy afternoon of play, both schools were presented with 4 footballs each, for girls and boys . Members of the schools Boards of Governors were also in attendance. Contact: Charter Pres. Mt. Kilimambogo is 65 km ride from Nairobi, located in the OldonyoSabuk National Park that sits in Machakos County. Kilimambogo stands at the borders of Machakos and Thika District. The Park’s attraction is the amazing view of Mt. Kenya, Mt. Kilimanjaro and Nairobi city.

To get involved, Rotary clubs can nominate one or two members of the club and sponsor them. Each climber is required to raise KSh 100,000 as a minimum qualification. KSh 50,000 will go to the cost of the climb (transport, accommodation, food, porters and other logistics), and the other KSh 50,000 will go to the Nairobi East fundraising kitty. Any amount above KSh 100,000 will go directly to the Club that has sponsored the climber.

New Generations Meeting with the District Governor The 4th edition of the New Generations address brought together over 200 Rotaractors from Rotaract clubs in Kenya as far as Malindi and Kakamega and across the borders from Kampala. The Rotaract club of Nairobi Central played the host to the most anticipated fellowship, and true to their word, they did not water our expectations. The District Governor, Rtn. Bimal Kantaria was the chief guest. He was accompanied by a host of distinguished Rotarians wh0 have been actively involved in furthering Rotary’s 5th avenue of service, the New Generations docket otherwise referred to as the Youth service. The D9212 Kenya Country Chair, Rtn. Sally Gitoho, the District Youth Services Chair Rtn. Paula Lanco, President of the Rotary club of Nairobi, Rtn. Kamal Sanghani and the Rotary’s D9212 Green Rotary Chair Rtn. Dorcas Otieno, were in attendance. In the year 2010, the New Generations Service became Rotary’s 5th avenue of service and to this end, Rotary clubs in Kenya have endeavoured not only to sponsor the charter of new Rotaract Clubs but have also started to work closely with Rotaractors in realizing their 4th goal of Rotaract; To provide opportunities for working in cooperation with sponsor Rotary clubs. In the last 5 years, over 20 Rotaract clubs have been chartered in Kenya and more are still in formation. Rapid growth of the Rotaract fraternity is expected. Closer involvement with sponsoring Rotary clubs has also led to the realization of the 5th goal of Rotaract; To motivate young people for eventual membership in Rotary, and it is indeed commendable that in the last 3 years, more and more Rotaractors are transiting into Rotary, a notable achievement being the formation of the Rotary club of Madaraka that is mostly made up of former Rotaractors. The DG in his address did mention and assure of his commitment towards strengthening the Rotary-RotaractInteract relationship. He as well promised to have Rotary’s support towards the upcoming multi district RYLA in Addis Ababa Ethiopia in November. The District Youth Services Chair, Paula Lanco, reiterated the DG’s commitment and as she has always done, she was categorical to assure her support to ensure that Rotaract and Interact gets all the support they need from their sponsor Rotary clubs. With all that said and done, the Joint Rotaract-Rotary New Generations meeting went down the books of history as one of the most successful fellowships with the highest attendance ever recorded, and with that, I’m really thankful to all who made it a huge success.

The flag off event was attended by Rotarians, Rotaractors, Interactors, Friends of Rotary among other guests. The purpose of the “Ride to Eradicate Polio” was to raise funds for the Rotary Polio Eradication Initiative and to sensitize the communities where the riders passed through about the need to end polio and immunization campaigns. The event was also covered by local media and received widespread acclaim in the District. The riders started their journey from Mtwapa to the Kenya-Tanzania border onto Tanga then Segera, Msata, Bagamoyo and lastly, their final destination in Dar Es Salaam, where they were met by the President of the Rotary Club of Bahari, Dar Es Salaam, Ali.

District Governor’s Challenge

A key goal in 2014-15 will be to increase the number of clubs and members in our District. The District Governor will be keen to spearhead an increase in the District’s Fund contribution to the foundation and to this end raise a District Governor’s Challenge and award system. An awards committee will form a jury team to come up with a judging system. Past President’s Challenge The DG’s challenge is to award a full Harris (PHF) worth of $1000 to any past president who charters a new rotary club.

The awards will be subject to the following terms and conditions: • The past president submits a completed “New Club Survey” form and sponsor club form duly approved by the sponsor club’s presidents and secretary. • DG Bimal will officially appoint the past president as the special representative in planning and organizing the new club formation. • The club should be chartered before 31st December 2014. • The new Rotary club should have a minium of 30 charter members who have paid their fees to RI and the District and duly registered as Rotarians on the RI website. • The new club should be at a maximum radius
