August 10, 2017 Attn: Robert Palmer Open Data Charter Aloha Robert,
I am Burt Lum, Executive Director of Hawaii Open Data, a non-profit 501(c)(3) (FEIN: 81 2116694) dedicated to advancing open data principles in Hawaii and creating collaborative environments that foster good government and civic innovation. Formed in 2012, we focus on improving data accessibility and integrity in support of public/private collaboration, government transparency and civic engagement. In addition to open data being a key element in an international movement for open government and transparency, it is a fundamental building block for open innovation in a collaborative, citizen-engaging environment. Toward this end we support and endorse the Open Data Charter. Hawaii Open Data is interested in becoming an Open Data Charter Steward. We’ve done considerable work in Hawaii in the form of open data legislation, including Act 263 (2013), State of Hawaii and Ordinance 13-39, City & County of Honolulu, both relating to open data as well as organizing events like Hon.Celerator, Civic.Celerator and the Hawaii Annual Code Challenge. We feel we can help marshall the Open Data Charter through the work we do in Hawaii and into the Pacific region, sharing best practices and experience. We are also interested in participating in Open Data Charter working groups and conference calls in order to not only to advance the principles of the charter but to leverage the international network and resources.
Thank you for the consideration,
Burt Lum Executive Director Hawaii Open Data
