CLASS TITLE: LEARNING COMMONS INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCE AND TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST BASIC FUNCTION: As technology, project and evidenced-based learning, and common core instruction is transforming schools, the space known as the library is evolving into a modern learning commons with fluid boundaries that are shaped by diverse needs and influenced by an interactive global community. Under the direction of the site principal or administrative designee, provide comprehensive services of learning commons duties involved with the acquisition, circulation, maintenance, distribution and management of print and electronic books and textbooks, student learning devices (i.e.: Chromebooks) and related information resources and devices in order to provide equitable access to information and robust teaching and learning resources for the entire school community; coordinate, schedule, and supervise the use of the learning commons facility, including students participating in distance learning classes; assist students, teachers, and community members with various library resources; receive, process and distribute instructional resources (electronic and print, including textbooks) according to established procedures; create bibliographic records of existing and new items in the learning commons collection; assist students and staff utilizing the school learning commons. For the purposes of this job description, “resources” includes, but is not limited to books, ebooks, periodicals, online databases, textbooks, online textbooks, tools, realia, recordings, etc. A “student learning device” includes, but is not limited to, any electronic device used by a student for technology facilitated learning, such as Chromebooks, iPads, tablets, laptops, etc. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: ESSENTIAL DUTIES: •

Manage and supervise the learning commons, allowing for a wide variety of learning activities to take place, including, but not limited to, computer facilitated instructions (distance and asynchronous learning), individual, small, and large group work, meetings, tutoring. Create and maintain an inviting, flexible, and active learning space that is readily available to students, teachers, and the community; organize and prepare displays, decorations and bulletin boards. Implement activities identified in PUHSD’s LCAP which relate to the learning commons. Perform a variety of learning commons support duties involved with the acquisition, circulation, maintenance and distribution of print and online resources and student learning devices (i.e., Chromebooks, etc.) and portal logins and other learning commons activities.

Supervise and assist students in all activities within the learning commons, including technology-facilitated learning activities (i.e., distance and asynchronous classes). Model and demonstrate information literacy and design thinking strategies and responsible online citizenship/behavior to students; understand copyright, fair use, and licensing of intellectual property, and assist users with their understanding and observance of the same. Leverage and incorporate electronic resources into and beyond the walls of the learning commons, including, but not limited to online databases, e-books, online textbooks, to maximize access to the school community and create flexible space in the learning commons; maximize e-resources to replace print resources in order to create more flexible space in the learning commons Support the use of instructional technology to engage students and to improve learning, providing 24/7 access to digital information resources for the entire learning community. Oversee and participate in the circulation of all learning commons resources and student learning devices (i.e, Chromebooks); check learning commons resources in and out using an assigned computerized circulation system; catalog and shelve resources (books, textbooks and other library materials;) repair damaged books and other resources/materials as needed; collect and shelve unattended library materials; weed old, outdated or severely damaged books; conduct annual inventory, prepare related reports for Board approval. Manage and track all licences required for online resources, including online textbooks. Operate a computer to maintain records of overdue learning commons materials, resources, and student learning devices and related materials; enter overdue information into a designated student information system, such as Aeries, and send overdue notices to students and teachers; collect fines and payments for overdue or lost items; maintain appropriate files and records; input and delete student information from computer as needed; assist the Registrar with records of student withdrawal, library “holds” and fines. Train and provide work direction and guidance to learning commons support staff, including students and parent volunteers; schedule and assign work; assist in the review of performance of student and parent volunteer helpers and submit review information to supervisor according to established procedures. Coordinate and schedule the use of all spaces within the learning commons, including, but not limited to, large group space, small group space, computer labs, etc.; prepare learning commons for class use, meetings, tutoring, adult school classes, and special presentations; Process incoming resources; create bibliographic records of existing items in the learning commons collection and add to online library database records, such as Destiny; edit and enhance MARC records; add new adopted textbooks/online textbooks and student learning devices; create bibliographies and lists for students and staff. Coordinate the distribution and collection of the learning common’s student learning devices (i.e., Chromebooks); bar-code, checkout and maintain records of daily loaners and charge carts; issue passwords for students; prepare fines or fees for loaner student learning devices; coordinate student learning device operations, issues or concerns with site-based or District-based information technology staff; distribute related records and retain signed contracts.

Receive process and distribute textbooks and online textbooks and devices according to established procedures; maintain related records and files (including licenses) ; enter new textbooks in appropriate system; assess fines and notify students and parents and staff for lost or damaged resources. Prepare and present orientation programs to classes related to learning commons, resource selection and genres, digital etiquette/citizenship, and other topics teachers may request. Collaborate with and support teachers by providing appropriate resources to enhance instruction. Communicate with students, staff and outside agencies, including the Placer County Library, to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns; maintain current knowledge of and advise staff of new developments and technologies in learning commons programs; provide information regarding materials, resources, and equipment available from the learning commons to staff, students and parents through electronic (website) and print (memos or newsletters). Assist in the research, selection and ordering of resources and materials (print and digital) for the learning commons to reflect alignment with the Common Core Standards, Boardadopted curricula, and which is reflective of cultural diversity; collaborate with administrative and instructional staff to ensure that a full range of information resources (print and digital) is available which support all students’ college and career readiness; prepare related fiscal reports and records related to the learning commons budget for resources and supplies. Assist students and teachers with the selection and location of resources, materials, and student learning devices; instruct students in proper methods of utilizing the learning commons; coordinate learning commons facility use (including labs, small, and large learning spaces) with instructors. Maintain current knowledge of learning commons resources, curricular requirements and applicable digital technologies. Manage, maintain and update the learning commons’ webpage and leverage social media to communicate program news to the community; maintain frequent and timely communication to stakeholders through the learning commons’ webpage, parent newsletter, e-mail, and other formats, such as local cable access television, video/audio streaming, and on-demand video/podcasts. Work collaboratively with other learning commons and library staff at the end of each school year to gather, inventory, and process all obsolete resources/materials for discarding from the learning commons in accordance with Board policies; coordinates and oversee vendor pick-up of donated resources/materials and disposal of resources/materials not worthy of donation. Mend, repair and maintain damaged learning commons resources and materials, including textbooks; select, prepare and maintain records of lost or damaged materials/resources. Maintain a safe environment for learning common patrons; remind students of school and learning commons behavior expectations and, if necessary, use appropriate consequences in accordance with established school guidelines. Maintain routine records related to learning commons materials and assigned activities. Operate a variety of learning commons and computer lab equipment including a computer and related software applications, copier, and others as assigned.

Assist office staff with comparable clerical tasks if/when learning commons is closed and/or work is not required to support learning commons program. Perform related duties as assigned.

New developments and technologies in learning resources and student learning devices . Learning resource reference materials and sources. Basic record-keeping techniques. Website publishing and use of social media for learning commons and school promotion.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to: Graduation from high school, two years of increasingly responsible work with high school students, and demonstrable organizational skills in prior work positions. General learning commons/library experience strongly preferred. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: Open school/classroom learning environment. Constant interruptions. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to shelve materials. Seeing to read books and media materials.
