Claims and Sub-claims Authentic Claim: One claim, three sub-claims: Claim: Leaders who are the most successful spend money on their followers. Sub-claim #1: People feel more love toward leaders who give them much. Sub-claim #2: People develop trust for leaders who provide for their needs. Sub-claim #3: People view leaders as generous when they spend resources on the people. Missing Claim: Three sub-claims pretending to add up to a claim: Three-in-one claim: The best leaders engender love, earn trust and establish a generous reputation. Sub-claim #1: Good leaders earn the love of their people. Sub-claim #2: Effective leaders develop trust among those they govern. Sub-claim #3: Strong leaders are generous toward the people. What’s the difference between the good claim (the authentic one) and the bad (the missing one) claim? The good one is a distinct conclusion based on the three sub-claims. The bad one is just three sub-claims listed with no distinct, overall conclusion. Focus for This Essay Organization:  A brief introduction that begins by engaging the reader in ideas that lead logically toward a statement of the claim and ends with the statement of the claim.  Up to three support paragraphs that begin with sub-claims that support the overall claim and then provide evidence and commentary.  A well-developed support paragraph will have roughly the equivalent of: CCQCCQC (claim, context, quote, commentary, context, quote, commentary).  A brief conclusion that drives home your main points. Ideas:  An insightful and complex claim. Complex means not simple or one-dimensional. Instead of, “Good leaders trust their followers.” say, “Good leaders who trust their followers are able to build a strong foundation for prosperity.”  Insightful and complex sub-claims. Note: Complete as many support paragraphs as you can, but be sure to state all of your sub-claims so I can see where you were headed.
