Lester B. Pearson Catholic High School Council Meeting Minutes April 25, 2016, 6:30 p.m.

Attendance: Bill Walsh, Jodi Ellen Chamberlain, Kaydian Black, Alison Pratt, Roxeanne Marberl, Laurie Brown, Joanne Laskoski, Nora Caputo 1. Opening Prayer at 7:00 p.m.: by Nora Caputo 2. Adoption of Agenda: Approved, nothing to add. January 2016 minutes approved. 3. Students’ Report: Raised $60 to stick Mr. Power to the wall ($5 per duct tape). Spirit Week after March Break. Grade 12 won again. Limbo on Beach Day, Teacher vs Grad basketball game, Multicultural day, Canada Day. Oscars coming up (red carpet high school event with awards) May 19 Ballots will go out this week to vote. Another spirit week will be later with a bbq and a soccer game about mid-June. Next week during Education Week there will be a province-wide Student Council mass. 4. Principals Report: Approval to run grade 9 Math and English full year in September 2016 as opposed to semesters. Hoping this will improve EQAO scores (especially with high ESL population). Pilot project with grade 9 this year. Math and English will alternate every second day. Other three subjects will be on semester system. Hoping to do this with both grades 9 and 10 the following year in 2017. Not looking to do this past grade 10 (only need three math credits, unless specializing in math). - LBP is implementing BYOD in grades 7 and 8 next year (i.e., chrome book or lap top not cell phones). Learning Technology Department at the Board is looking at setting up a deal with Best Buy, etc. and also look at the LT Department purchasing and setting up a payment program for some students (chrome books are selling at @ $250-$400 and should last through to grade 12). There will be a letter and a meeting for all feeder schools. This will not take away form the personal touch of teachers…just preparing students for a world of technology. There is a committee of teachers involved and supporting the initiative. Students with IEP/assistive technology do not need to purchase a chrome book. - The numbers next year look good. We need to hire another teacher next year. Surplus of 2.67 teachers in high school, but Bill spoke with Cindy Owens in HR because numbers were off… we were able to hold onto all staff. No surpluses. Projected at 260 for grades 7-8, 550 at high school. 60-100 walk ons are normal. Bodes well for next year. - Bill clarified the school’s position on cell phones: they are to be used under the direction of the teacher in the class room. Rules are more stringent in grades 7 and 8. - The Education Week’s open house evening has been changed to a day time event (11 a.m.-1 p.m.) on Wednesday. Kim S has sent an email with details. There is a schedule of events which will be posted on Monday.

- There were two MADD assemblies today for grades 7,8,9 and grades 10,11,12. LBP already had a texting and driving assembly. 5. Chair’s Report: $305.26 was spent on five interpreters and taxi chits to support parent transportation after the November multicultural event. The second event was February ($87) and the final event will be in May. Last year, Council spent the $1000 PIC Grant in the following way: $100 for tickets to the school play, $255 for H. Wyskup’s grades 7/8 school trip, $243.83 for the grade 6 evening, $71.62 on beverages for Open House, $330 to support the Grade 12 graduation. Bill will check if PIC cheque has arrived - The 2014-2015 $500 cheque for HOST never cleared. - LBP no longer has “mandatory” student fees so Council will no longer receive the $1 per student money (Council didn’t receive it last year either). - Jo will talk to Cathy about what documents need translation (PRO Grant funds). 6. Treasurer’s Report: - We currently have $520 in bank account; the cheque for the HOST program has yet to be cashed. Jo will follow through with Richard Lussier to ensure cheque will be deposited. - Karen will speak to the staff member who is organizing a beach ball tourney (maybe raise some for the HOST program). 7. Parish Report: - Nora is not able to find St. Ignatius parish online. - Good Shepherd’s Syrian family is in Lebanon right now. They have a completely furnished apartment near LBP. - May 7 is the Blackburn Hamlet Community Garage sale. Good Shepherd Parish will be participating. - Annunciation has their AGM from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. on May 28. Refreshments will follow the 9:00 a.m. mass. - Annunciation is looking for volunteers for VBS (Vacation Bible School). Interested students should email [email protected]. 8. CSPA Report: - Not much to report. - May 5 is at St. Peter’s 7-9 (Dr. Maggie Mamen). - Any unused PIC or PRO grants money used to go back to the School Board; now it goes back to the Ministry of Education. - Last year, $8758 was returned board-wide from unspent PIC and PRO grant money. 9. Community Report: - Jodi Ellen passed out community events information. - There is an initiative to form a neighbourhood watch program. They have the support of Tim Tierny’s office and the Ottawa Police. - There is supposed to be a community BBQ at Jasmine Park. The date is not yet determined. 10. Fundraising: - We will defer fundraising until the new school year of 2016-2017.

11. New Business: - Karen got a grant for Community Culture and Cooking with Crock Pots for newcomers in transitional housing. We have $1000 to spend. Karen is looking at having gently used crock pots donated. We can use PIC $ for this. We should ask Home Depot or Canadian Tire. OR we use this $ for crock pots and use PIC $ to buy food (invite parents to come after school). - Karen has been beading in Maker Space. Marina Westbrook (School Board’s Indigenous rep). These book marks were used as gifts at the board level. Any proceeds from the bookmark sales will be donated to Operation Come Home. 12. Meeting adjourned at 8:35 p.m.

Next meeting: May 30, 2016, at 7:00 in the Learning Commons
