4. Obey God 1 John 2:3-4 3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. 4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 1 Samuel 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams. Job 36:11 11 If they obey and serve him, they shall spend their days in prosperity, and their years in pleasures. See also: Acts 5:29, 2 Corinthians 10:5, 2 John 1:6, Ephesians 6:6 Note: When we obey God we are pleasing Him. Obedience is better than sacrifice because those who obey God shall be rewarded. Also, those who obey God know God (see 1 John 2:3). Those who do not obey God do not know God (see 1 John 2:4).

Acts 5:29 29

Then Peter and the other apostles answered and said, We ought to obey God rather than men.

2 Corinthians 10:5 5

Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ; 2 John 1:6

And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it. Ephesians 6:6 6

Not with eyeservice, as menpleasers; but as the servants of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart; 1 John 2:3-4 3

And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments. He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 4

John 15:10 10

If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father's commandments, and abide in his love. I John 3:24 24

And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.

5. Listen to God (and to God’s Conviction) John 8:47 He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God. Matthew 4:4 But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.

John 10:27-29 27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: 28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. 29 My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand.

How to Know God’s Name John 16:8 And when he is come [the Comforter], he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: See also: John 10:27-28, Proverbs 19:20, Acts 7:51, Hebrews 4:7, Revelation 3:20, Revelation 3:22, Ezekiel 33:30-32, Luke 10:16, John 16:7-11 Note: When you listen to God, you are waiting on God and listening to His clear voice. God may speak in a still small voice and you must be willing to wait for it. Listen also to God’s clear conviction and do not harden your heart against what God is showing you (Hebrews 3:12-15). God can speak to you through (1) what you read, (2) by the Holy Spirit, and by (3) His still small voice (see 1 Kings 19:11-13). Proverbs 19:20 20

Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end.

Acts 7:51 51

Ye stiffnecked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, ye do always resist the Holy Ghost: as your fathers did, so do ye. Hebrews 4:7 7

Again, he limiteth a certain day, saying in David, To day, after so long a time; as it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts. Revelation 3:20-22 20

Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me. 21 To him that overcometh will I grant to sit with me in my throne, even as I also overcame, and am set down with my Father in his throne. 22 He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches.

Ezekiel 33:30-32 30

Also, thou son of man, the children of thy people still are talking against thee by the walls and in the doors of the houses, and speak one to another, every one to his brother, saying, Come, I pray you, and hear what is the word that cometh forth from the LORD. 31 And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but they will not do them: for with their mouth they shew much love, but their heart goeth after their covetousness. 6

How to Know God’s Name 32

And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument: for they hear thy words, but they do them not. Luke 10:16 16

He that heareth you heareth me; and he that despiseth you despiseth me; and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me. John 16:7-11 7

Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. Hebrews 3:12-15 12

Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. 13 But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. 14 For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; 15 While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. 1 Kings 19:11-13 11

And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake: 12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?

______________________________________________ But, how do you know what you are hearing is from God?

7

How to Know God’s Name But, how do you know what you are hearing is from God?

First, make sure your heart is right with God and that you do not have any unrepentant sin that comes between you and God. Second, be patient and wait for God’s answer. God may speak to you in a still small voice and you need to listen for it. Third, test what you are hearing according to the test of the spirits found in 1 John 4:1-4. God’s Spirit will always tell you that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh, while an evil spirit will deny that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh.

1 John 4:1-4 4 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. 4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. One important point to mention regarding John 10:28: “And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” This does not mean that we cannot leave Jesus, if we choose to. We can reject Christ. Only those who continue in God’s goodness shall be Jesus Christ’s sheep (see Romans 11:21-22).

Romans 11:21-22 21

For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. 22

Many, many times in both the Old and New Testament, God warns us to abide in 8

How to Know God’s Name Him and not rebel against Him. See Hebrews 3:12-15 and Hebrews 10:29. Hebrews 3:12-15 12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. Hebrews 10:28-31 28 He that despised Moses' law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: 29 Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? 30 For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. 31 It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. ___________________________________________________ The following verses are just some of the many verses about how you can reject Christ, forsake God, and be lost: Hebrews 10:28-31, Hebrews 3:7-19 (see verse 14), Romans 11:17-22, Hebrews 6:4-8, Matthew 12:22-37, 1 John 2:24, Ezekiel 3:20, Ezekiel 18:24, 2 Peter 2:20-22, Hebrews 10:28-31, Matthew 5:29-30, 2 Chronicles 15:2, Mark 11:26, Matthew 18:34-35, Matthew 10:28, Matthew 10:32-33, Mark 13:13, Romans 6:15-16, Mark 4:1-25. May God show you the truth as you seek Him with your whole heart (Jeremiah 29:13).

Jeremiah 29:13 And ye shall seek me, and find me, when ye shall search for me with all your heart.
