Knightly News June 16, 2017 Where we believe all students deserve the opportunity to learn actively, to experience a sense of belonging, and to achieve academic and social success.

A message from Principal Chris Sousa

Summer time is right around the corner, but before we get to it, we have some things to take care of. This last week of school is filled with field trips, classroom projects, fun and “good byes”. However, for our 8th grade students, this final week of school carries a little more weight. Tonight we start out their celebration with the 8th grade dance. It is always wonderful to see them all dressed up and celebrating. Next week we will say good bye to them at graduation, which is always bittersweet. 8th grade Graduation always makes me realize how quickly time flies by, and helps me to remember to spend as much time with my kids as I can. It is so important for families to spend time together, and summertime is so conducive to this. I am looking forward to camping, kayaking, and fishing with my kids. Although I will find time to read with them and play math games also (we have to fight against summer slide!). I hope you all have a wonderful last week of school and an even better Summer. Take care,

Chris Thanks to our Art Teacher - Chris Arnold, Tech Director - Kevin Smith, and Tech Teacher - Janice Kane, we were able to purchase two televistions (mounted in our main hallway) to showcase student artwork, school activities, and announcements.

School News: 

Representatives from the Blaisdell Public Library will be here on Tuesday, June 20 from 9-9:45 am to discuss summer reading with grades K-4 in the cafeteria.

Please do not call the school during dismissal time (2:15-2:40) unless it is an emergency. Our front office is so busy getting kids set up on the right busses, parent pick ups, clubs, and afterschool care, that we may not be able to answer the call. Thank you.

We had a fantastic day on June 14 for our annual Field Day!! This is a day that the 8th grade students, led by Diane Boyd and Greg Gilbert, run outdoor activity stations for every student K-7. It is a fantastic community event for our school. The students and staff have a great time, and the 8th graders learn a lot about what it takes to work with other students of all ages. This year the PTA sponsored a DJ and a free lunch for everyone!

Mrs. Jeanotte hosted a 6th grade “Space Walk” whereby her students presented their models of the solar system. They were all great, and used very creative ways to represent where we all live.

Thank you all for participating in the American Red Cross blood drive at Nottingham School on June 14,

2017. In addition, the American Red Cross spoke to students and Mr. Gilbert has included health lessons provided by the American Red Cross. 

Nottingham School is super excited to offer a Summer Reading Incentive Program for Summer 2017! Students entering grades 1-5 will learn the details for this at an assembly on June 20, 2017. We will be sending home a packet that includes the reading logs, book suggestions, and all the details to help families to continue to strengthen not only their student’s reading skills, but their understanding that reading is a life long pursuit!

JS2S is hosting a "Spirit Week" for our last week of school, and the themes are listed below. Dressing up is completely optional, but we thought this would be a fun way to end our school year together! Dress code still applies, and we ask that all spirit week clothing be school appropriate. Here is the schedule: Monday, 6/19: Tuesday, 6/20: Wednesday, 6/21: Thursday, 6/22: Friday, 6/23:

Decades Day- dress up in styles from your favorite decade Look Alike Day- dress like a twin, triplet, quadruplet, or more! Hat Day- no $1 collected, just wear a hat! Crazy Hair Day- crazy hair styles encouraged! Green and Gold Day- dress in our school's colors!

Here are some photos of the"Legacy Lane" project that our 8th graders are working on as part of our Guidance curriculum. These words of wisdom will eventually line the path from the parking lot into the school (next year), and some will be shared at our Grad Parade on 6/22.

We are very excited that at the last school board meeting the Board decided to support the 1:1 initiative, partially funding with unreserved fund balance and partially with grant funds. It is exciting that we are able to move ahead with this and next Fall each 7th and 8th grade student will be receiving a chromebook! This is a big task, and as we move forward we will be in touch with all of the 7th and 8th grade students and parents as to how we will roll out the program.

Just a little fun info that 6 students will be performing at the Leddy Center in July for 3 weeks. They will be in the production of Annie. Playing Annie is our very own 4th grader Cassidy Green! Orphans are played by two 2nd graders - Tess Kouchoukos, and Grace Kelly. Two 5th graders - Ainsley Kilbreth and Claire Burbank, and 59th Street Homeless boy - 4th grader Ryan Kouchoukos.

From Mrs. Buzzell: Planting Science has updated their webpage to include the Spring 2017 STAR project winners. Nottingham students captured two of the twelve STAR project slot - out of a field of 306 middle and high school teams. I'm really proud of the work all my students did this spring with their plant projects and it is gratifying to see my students' hard work acknowledged by Planting Science. Go to the STAR Gallery and check out the Spring 2017 winning projects!
