Kimball modernization project update – 7/14/2017 Prepared on: July 14, 2017 Location: 3375 Minnesota Ave SE Ward: 7 Overall Project Budget: $51M Design Builder/Architects: MCN Build/hord|copland|macht Project Manager(s): Jamil Hamilton Project Status: Planning Construction Start Date: Fall 2017 Project Completion Date: Summer 2019 General Project Updates • The current building sits on a hill consisting of four wings—all of which sit at different elevations along the hill. In addition to the building’s facilities being outdated and classrooms lacking the proper square footage, much of the building is not ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessible due to lack of ramps, lifts, and elevators. • We have already conducted a priced concept drawing of a new school, to see if it was possible to modernize with the current $17M budget. The results of the study proved that we needed $34M more to do the work. Currently DGS’s (DC Department of General Services) contracts and procurement office is taking longer than originally anticipated to award the job to the architect and contractor team (design-build team). Project Status • Work Scheduled From 6/30/2017 to 7/14/2017 o HCM Architects schedule a date to review proposed concept design with Kimball leadership and SIT for feedback and tweaks o Setting up meetings with regulatory agencies Commission of Fine Arts (CFA), Historic Preservation Review Board (HBRP), the Department of Parks & Recreation, and the Board of Zoning Adjustment (BZA) • Work Scheduled From 7/14/2017 to 7/28/2017 o Continued refinement of schematic design o Site Walkthrough at Kimball—to verify the labeling on the classroom furniture o Site Walkthrough at Davis–to verify the proposed move locations o Identify Kimball Staff to be onsite on moving days to assist the efficient completion of the move. Davis Swing Space Update Elevator: - CMU shaft wall – 100% - Waterproofing – 80% to be completed tomorrow - Backfill after waterproofing - Face brick scheduled to start today and be completed by or before July 15th - Install roof – after face brick complete
Elevator scheduled for delivery July 14th Elevator completed by or before August 28th – pushing for an early completion
Connector: - Demo windows and existing roof – 80% - Install structural steel (steel on site) – 15% - Complete connector – 7/29/2017 Playground: - Estimated delivery and mobilization date – August 1st - Demo existing playground equipment – 100% - Installation of playground and play surface – 3 to 4 weeks - by or before August 29th Kitchen: - Rough-in plumbing – 80% - Concrete patching – 80% - Rough-in framing – 90% - Rough-in electrical power – 30% - Demo opening for duct work – 100% - Duct work for fan and MAU 90% - Kitchen hood to be shipped – week of July 10th - Install kitchen hood - upon arrival - Install kitchen fan and MAU after installation of kitchen hood - Installation of new perimeter/egress door – July 19th - Hang & Finish GWB – 90% - Install kitchen flooring – by or before July 14nd - Install kitchen equipment – by or before July 16th - Deep clean kitchen equipment – after installation - Assemble / Install walk-in coolers – started today - Coordinate health inspection – starting July 21st - Kitchen turn-over – by or before July 29th.
