November 2017 K. N.S

November Newsletter Christmas Concert Kildimo NS Christmas Concert takes place at 6.30pm on Tuesday 12th December in St. Joseph’s Church. It promises to be a wonderful evening of entertainment for parents and families of our pupils and all classes are busy practising for the night. Tickets are on sale from Indu in the office at €5 each for adults and teenagers. Pre-school siblings of our pupils are free of charge. We may need some help at the end of the night to clean up so as to restore the church to its usual state so if you are free to help please let us know.

First Aid and Defibrillator Training On Monday 13th November, 24 members of our school community benefitted from a training course given by Marion Morrissey, of Safe Aid Training, in adult and paediatric first aid and also in the use of the defibrillator. This training was provided free of charge by Marion, who also, very generously donated a defibrillator to the school. This is located on the school premises, just outside the front door of the school. Along with the intensive training given on the night, Marion highlighted some very simple measures which we should all have in place in case we are ever faced with an emergency situation at home. One such simple measure is that we should all have our exact address (in the following order) posted up somewhere in our kitchen in order to be able to direct an ambulance to our house accurately. 1. 2. 3. 4.

County: Limerick Town/Village: Kildimo House Address Eircode.

The reason these details need to be given in that particular order is to ensure that in a situation of panic, the details are clearly conveyed starting with the general and moving on to the specific. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Marion again for what is undoubtedly an incredibly generous gesture to the local community.

Parents’ Association The Annual General Meeting of our Parents' Association took place in the school at 7pm on Monday 6th November. The new committee that was voted in and are as follows: Chairperson: Marion Morrissey Secretary: Louise Dunne Treasurer: Vivienne Downes We would like to take this opportunity to thank the outgoing chairperson Trish Ryan and secretary Catherine Fennessy for all their hard work and dedication over the past two years. It is much appreciated. At our last meeting on the 22nd November, it was decided that one meeting per term is sufficient unless the need arises. The next dates for your diaries are Monday the 19th February at 20:00hrs and Monday 14th May at 20:00hrs. There will be reminders of these meetings on the Kildimo NS Parents’ Association page. We would greatly appreciate if you have not liked this page to please do so as it is a great source of information and reminders and please share events. We would really welcome new members to the committee as every parent has a valuable contribution to make to the wellbeing and happiness of our children during their time at school. As the committee has been formed, all we need from time to time is a little help with days like Communion, graduation, sports day etc. So that we are in a position to cater for these events we run a cake sale to raise money for insurance, catering supplies and the annual ice cream van visit! Any money that is left over which is very rare will be discussed with school and put towards something extra that our children need. We would like to wish you all a Lovely Christmas and a happy and healthy 2018! Marion and Louise

Parking We are appealing to parents to abide by the parking regulations in place outside the school. The disabled space directly outside the gate should not be used for dropping and collecting. The double yellow lines are strictly a SET DOWN/NO PARKING area. Cars may pull in momentarily to drop or collect children in the set down area but anyone wishing to accompany his/her child to the school must park beyond the yellow lines. Please make sure that grandparents and child minders are made aware of these regulations. Similarly, we request that you do not block the entrance to our neighbours’ driveways or park in front of the staff parking area. It would help greatly to alleviate the problem in the morning, if parents would return to their cars and pull away once their child is settled on yard and there is a teacher on duty to supervise. This would free up parking spaces for other families who are dropping their children in advance of school opening. Another option is for parents of our older pupils, who do not need to be accompanied to the school gate, to drop them at Slattery’s Corner and let them walk up to the school on the path. Your co-operation in this would be greatly appreciated and would ensure the continued safety of our pupils in and around the school gate.

Visit by the Diocesan Advisors On Thursday 26th October, Sr. Rose Miriam, one of the Limerick Diocesan Advisors to Primary Schools visited Kildimo NS. She visited all the classes and was very impressed with the work going on in each class. She also complimented the children on how readily they engaged with her. She brought with her some of her fellow Dominican sisters from her congregation in USA, Mother Anne Marie, Sr. Anne Hyacinth, Sr. Beatrice and Sr. Marra Grace. The Sisters remarked on what a lovely welcoming atmosphere there is here in Kildimo NS.

Feast of the Immaculate Conception Friday December 8th is a Holy Day, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, so all classes will attend 10am Mass in St. Joseph’s Church that day. Please make sure children are dressed appropriately for the weather on the day.

Choir News Our choir members are very busy preparing for the Christmas Concert and also for our forthcoming trip to Thorpe’s Nursing Home to bring some festive cheer to the residents there. We will be travelling to Thorpe’s on Wednesday 20 th December and we have a lovely programme of entertainment in train for the day. The children are very excited and it is so lovely for them to have the opportunity to “give something back” to others this Christmas. We are very grateful to the O’Shea family for facilitating us in this endeavour.

Christmas Cards As we are a Green School and in order to make sure that children are not left out, it is not permitted for pupils to give out bundles of Xmas cards to classmates in the yard or in school. We thank you for your co-operation in advance. As Christmas is such a magical time for our younger pupils, we ask you please to do your best to ensure that older pupils do not “let the cat out of the bag”, as it were, regarding the man in red! It is important that the magic be kept alive for as long as possible!

Ms. O’ Driscoll’s Junior Infants We have had a great month in Junior Infants. Our theme for Aistear was the Post Office. We had great fun in the role play area, playing with our props of a toy post office, a big green post box, telephone, envelopes, stamps and stickers. We also designed stamps, filled out passport applications and played Post Office bingo! We made friendship cards for our friends and stuck a stamp on the envelope. We are planning a trip to the post office this week to post our cards. Jimmy, our local postman, is going to call in to us for a chat about his job. We have a list of questions prepared for him! At the moment we are also learning our songs for our Christmas play, ‘A Little Nativity’. We are looking forward to performing it for you on December 12th!

Ms. Fitzgibbon’s Senior Infants This month we began our reading initiative – Literacy Lift Off. There are five different stations – New reading, familiar reading, writing, phonics and games. We are thoroughly enjoying it and benefiting greatly from the experience. We have started preparing for our Christmas concert in December. We have learnt all our songs and are looking forward to performing in front of all our families and friends. Last Friday, members of the Kildimo-Pallaskenry hurling team, who recently won the county final, came to visit the boys and girls in school. There was great excitement as they answered questions and signed hurleys and jerseys.

Ms. Griffin’s First Class Our class has been enjoying a variety of topics this month. We have been exploring Irish myths and Legends in History. We read 'The Children of Lir' and illustrated our favourite part during Art. We also painted beautiful 'Midwinter Skies' last week for Art. We have finished our second novel of the year 'The Twits' by Roald Dahl. We really enjoyed this one and preferred it to 'James and the Giant Peach'. The characters are both scary and funny. Mr. Twit was our favourite by far. We would like to say a big well done to Ross Kelly and Eve McNamara who both won an award for their entries into the Credit Union Art Competition. We are so proud of them!

Ms. Meskell’s 2nd & 3rd Class This month has flown by we have been so busy. 2nd & 3rd went to Mary I for Science Week at the start of November to see the 'Ugly Animal Show' which was really interesting. They learned all about exotic and poisonous animals that were not particularly beautiful looking but none the less need our help to avoid extinction! It was a very enjoyable day out. We had a very exciting achievement this month for a girl in 2nd- Anna Butler was highly commended for her age category in the Credit Union Art Competition. Well done Anna the whole class are very proud of you! For Art we made winter scenes on black paper with chalk. They came out beautifully, we have great artists in this class. Just a reminder to all of the 2nd & 3rd class boys and girls to keep up the good work at school and with the homework and to practice cúpla focail Gaeilge sa bhaile freisin.

Mr. Shortt’s 3rd & 4th Class We have had a busy November in 3rd and 4th class. The children had been working hard on their “Mammals of Ireland” project and presented their posters to one another this month. To celebrate Science Week, we ventured to The Lime Tree theatre to watch “The Ugly Animal Show”. The children really enjoyed the show and learned lots of information about ugly animals around the world. It has been an extremely musical month in 3rd and 4th between learning more songs on the tin whistle and being very fortunate to have people from Music Generation come into our classroom each Friday. As always we are continuously working on our Irish. It is important to remember revise any spellings, phrases and grammar that we cover in class and use them at home whenever possible. There are a number of apps available to help children improve their Irish for example, Duolingo, Nemo Irish Gaelic and Cúla Caint. Ba bhreá liom dá mbainfeá triail astu !! Just to remind all parents it is essential that your child completes all homework and that the homework journal is signed each night.

Le gach dea-ghuí, Mr. Shortt.

Mrs. Aherne’s 4th & 5th Class Congratulations to the boys and girls who were highly commended in the recent Cois Sionna Credit Union Art Competition, José Azzopardi a winner from rang a ceathair. Maith Thú!

Tin whistles are seeing the light of day in earnest this month as we begin our Christmas repertoire. So please bear with us as we practise to entertain you over the Christmas season! To embrace the Gaeilge ‘Bain triail as an cúpla focal sa bhaile’. Irish reading is an essential part of gaining confidence and love of the language. Reading aloud is excellent for developing the ‘blas’ and picking up useful phrases. Thank you to all parents for your attendance at the Parent Teacher Meetings. It was a pleasure as always to meet and converse with you and Rang a Ceathair is a Cúig can be very proud of good reports all round. Rath Dé ar an obair go léir.

Everyone has been working hard since the return after Mid-Term and the excitement is building for the big Christmas Concert on Dec. 12th! We are busy rapping, playing the tin whistle, putting out Christmas messages together and perfecting our dance moves. A very special night awaits! 5th/ 6th class now have their own class blog. Come check it out see all the latest news! Just google KNS seesaw or enter the following link: https://blog.seesaw.me/kns5th6th/#!/ Well done to the debating team who took part in round 1 of the competition yesterday against JFK. The motion being argued was 'Ireland is the best place in the World to Live' and the Kildimo team of Caoimhe, Katie H, Ellie, Doireann, Áine and Seamus were proposing the motion. A great debate was had discussing the advantages/ disadvantages of modern day Ireland. Christmas/ January tests for 5th/ 6th class will take place in mid-January 2018. Thanks to all the parents who attended parent teacher meetings recently. They were all really informative and it was great to discuss your child's progress. Please remember the gentle tips to help ensure your child prospers to the best of their capabilities in my class this year. A massive congratulations to Katie Smith who was recently highly commended on her Credit Union Art entry. She went to an award ceremony yesterday in Askeaton and received an award for her amazing work. (see picture below) Well done to Ciarán McMahon, Conor McMahon and James Ranahan who recently won the Sarsfield Cup football competition (boys city team). All three boys played in the Gaelic Grounds the other night in the final and all at the school are extremely proud of their achievement. We had great fun during science week and had a big quiz where the teams were named after elements of the Periodic Table. We also did lots of experiments in class, including investigating what carbon dioxide is and making our own explosive aliens! Last Friday, winning members of the Kildimo/ Pallaskenry intermediate hurling team came to visit the school with the coveted trophy they had just won. A lovely ceremony ensued...including a Guard of Honour for our guests, GAA speeches from 6th class children and words of welcome from Mrs. Aherne's class. There was also a medal presentation for winning members of the u8 club team. It was a really special event and all children and adults thoroughly enjoyed the occasion. 4th, 5th and 6th class hurlers....please get out for 10 mins hurling at home at any opportunity! We won't feel it before the hurling campaign comes around and the challenge of competing in the Olo Cup again is fast approaching!

Míle Buíochas, Mr. O'Neill

HPS The HPS committee are so delighted to announce that we have been awarded the HPS Flag. We are so happy and excited and we could not have done it without the support of the school, parents, our co-coordinator Mairéad Azzopardi and the parents on the committee Aileen O'Shaughnessy and Mags Griffin. We will be having a celebration day very soon where the flag will be raised which you will all be informed of after Christmas. Thanks to everyone again and keep up the good work! The HPS committee

NEPS- National Education Psychological Service: A Service to Schools On 4th October last, our newly appointed schools psychologist, Mr. Richard Egan visited the school and met with myself and the special education team to discuss the level of support required by the school from the National Educational Psychological Service (NEPS) this year. I asked him to send me a short article for our newsletter, detailing for parents the manner in which NEPS provides support to schools, which he kindly did. Please take a moment to read his article below.

NEPS – National Educational Psychological Service: A Service to Schools

Dear Parent, At the request of Ms. Foley, I am letting you know of the educational psychological service to your school which is provided through the Dept. of Education & Skills and is known as NEPS. NEPS stands for the National Educational Psychological Service. Kildimo NS has an assigned NEPS psychologist, Dr. Richard Egan, who visits the school at the request of the Principal a few times in the year. NEPS psychologists specialise in working with the school community. I work with both primary and post-primary schools. I am concerned with learning, behaviour, social and emotional development. As well as Kildimo, I am assigned to a large group of schools, as well as other duties within NEPS. I work in partnership with teachers, parents and children in identifying educational needs. I offer a range of services aimed at meeting these needs, for example, supporting individual students (through consultation and assessment), special projects and research. In most cases, children’s needs will be identified and supported by their teachers, but sometimes a child’s needs might require the services of NEPS. In most cases, parents will be aware that their child may require additional support in school and the school will be following a plan to help your child. If the school feel that your child needs additional involvement, they will request your consent to involve the NEPS psychologist. Not every child needs to meet the psychologist in person. In the event that Kildimo needs my support, Ms. Foley will request my involvement following consultation with parents/teachers and depending on the child’s response to what has been done in school.
