Four Wheel Drive NSW & ACT HUNTER REGION SUB COMMITTEE CAMP QUALITY FAMILY FUN DAY 5TH May 2013 WORIMI CONSERVATION LANDS Participating Clubs Please send this out to your members to ensure we get a great roll up on the day. Hunter Region subcommittee for Four Wheel Drive NSW & ACT run a family Fun Day for kids from Camp Quality, this event has been running in excess of 10 years and is a permanent and popular event for the kids. The local 4WD Clubs members transport approximately 80 kids and carers onto the beach. Beach Permits are Exempt for the day for Camp Quality just advise the NP staff on the gate that you are with Camp Quality Our agenda for the day is: 9 -9.30 am Meet and load kids and carers at Wallsend plaza organisers will assist kids and carers into vehicles. 10 – 10.30 am Air down transport kids via Lavis Lane entrance down the beach to the wreck of the Signa wait there till all the vehicles arrive be aware of kids and water and the vehicular traffic. 12 pm leave the beach via Lavis Lane and enter the “Tongue” for lunch via Worimi Quad Track to access this track drivers need to leave the beach via Lavis Lane and turn right on the entry/exit road just past non trailer car park where the green 40ft container is located. This container is used for storage of Worimi Quad bikes. Please follow any directions from the Worimi representatives and NP staff as it is their permission that gets us onto the beach. Also realise this is a 1 off entry point it is only for Worimi Quad bikes but has recently been upgraded to allow a film crew in so this is a bit special for us, as yet I have not checked the route, however, as we are competent 4WDers I am confident we will get through ok. The reason for accessing the Tongue from the Quad bike track and not the way we have in the past is a combination of beach restrictions and the tongue is privately owned by the Worimi people and this is the access offered to us by the management committee. 12.30 pm lunch and Cultural Presentation by Jonathan Lilley at the “Tongue” near the water holes (same location as last year). For those of you that have been attending this event from the start some 10 years ago we previously had a presentation by an Aboriginal Elder which provided the kids and most of the adults with a different view of the beach. Toilets will be on site provided by National Parks Hunter Region. 1.30 to 2.30 Sand boarding on the dunes north of the “Tongue” always a hit for the kids and adults can have a go as well just realise what goes down must come up!!! Sand boards are again provided by Port Stephens 4WD Tours. 3pm leave the beach for home (or Wallsend Plaza to be more accurate), this departure time may very on the day depending on the heat of the day and the kids, remember it is what is best for them. All that is left is to say is come along and have a great day with the kids - BBQ soft drinks and fun free. If you get the opportunity on the day to thank our suppliers it would be appreciated it does cost them money and makes the day for the kids. Don’t forget to thank yourself for helping others. Remember Slip Slap Slop

Email [email protected] RECOVERY ASSISTANCE UPCOMING EVENT AT WITTITRIN Hi All Would members of the Kempsey Four Wheel Drive Club be interested in assisting with the recovery needs at our upcoming event on the weekend of May 25th & 26th? Some info KMORC will be holding The Scott's Hydraulics "Kempsey 250" at Wittitrin on the Kemp family's property situated on Dungay Creek Rd. The event will be conducted from early morning to late afternoon on both Saturday & Sunday, and recovery will be organised in section's with the main Team Leaders on the day being Paul Keast and Barry Clenton. Being affiliated/conducted under CAMS we are bound by their safety procedures and rules and can assist in bringing anyone wishing to help up to speed.(Paul Keast will have the relevant info - 0408624827). On a side note we will be having visitors coming south to help from the Grafton 4wd Club as they will be helping with the new National OffRoad Round to be held at Halfway Creek in September and run by John Patterson(formally the race director of the Temagog race), these helpers are coming down to be developed into CAMS competent recovery and will form a team with Kempsey people to take on this task in September. John will be at our event in May and available to talk if this is of interest to your members also. Cheers David Spokes - 0419620856 Vice President

Save Our Macleay River up-date 27 April 2013

Dear friends, There have been two meetings of the Steering Committee with many ideas about further actions raised. The Public Relations sub-group met on 13 April with 4 participants and the Steering Committee met on 20 April with 8 members attending. While everyone involved is very energetic and enthusiastic, people do have other commitments and interests and cannot attend every meeting or carry out all the necessary actions. Therefore it would be great if there were a few more of you actively involved. If you have skills to offer and are interested, contact me ([email protected]) or just turn up at the next meeting 10.30am at Kempsey RSL on Saturday,18 May 2013. Below are several points raised at the meetings. Attached are the itinerary for a 2-day camping tour to the Halls Peak and Hillgrove area, the council policy on mining, an article on the missing ethics of mining and a link for interesting listening.

Incorporation The issue was discussed with the suggestion to approach Kempsey Shire Council to auspice the group for any grant money we might receive and to consider becoming a Council subcommittee. This would mean we would not need to go through the process of incorporation. However, a close association with Council - even if it were accepted by Council - needs more discussion. Water testing As a result of the public meetings, Kempsey Shire Council requested more water testing should be done by the Dept of Health. Within a week, the Dept offereded to test one sample of raw water per month drawn from the river in Bellbrook for the next 12 months. Council has taken up the offer. However the Dept wrote that “the project is conditional on the NSW Health Forensic & Analytical Science Services laboratory having capacity to undertake such analysis”. We should watch that laboratory. Appropriate funding options for us to do water testing have not been found yet. Very prelimanry contact has been made with CSIRO. Contact has been established with several staff members at the EPA Armidale office and they sent the results of extensive water testing in the catchment in November 2011. We understand that the oyster growers in the Lower Macleay undertake regular water testing and are going to contact them. Publicity and Activities A sample letter and a media release are being drafted. The sample letter can be used by people to copy or as inspiration for letters to send to politicians and/or the media. The media release is to inform about the existence of the group and the current concerns. The Save Our Macleay River website is being developed and should be up and running after the approval of the steering committee at the next meeting. An itinerary for a 2-day camping tour to the Hillgrove and Halls Peak Area has been prepared.

Page 10 The tour will give an opportunity to get an impression of the mines (old and planned ones) and the gorges and creeks they drain into. At first we thought it might be getting too cold in May, but decided to offer it anyway for the weekend 25-26 May and repeat it in October. People who don't want to spend a cold night in a tent could drive to Armidale for the night. More details in the attachment. The Environmental Defenders Office (EDO) has offered to run workshops on legal matters regarding mining. They suggested to combine the workshops with another public event to attract more participants and we are considering to organise such an event with speakers late in July. A big media event involving lots of paddlers on the river near Bellbrook and fun activities as well as information in Bellbrook has been suggested for spring. Conditions of the river, who to invite, how to attract participants and the media are points of discussions and preparations. FYI Kempsey Shire Council has adopted a Mining Activities in the Kempsey Shire Council Area Policy. See attachment. Arthur Bain, who initiated the public meetings for Save Our Macleay River and presented excellent information on mining and the pollution, has nominated for the position of Councillor at the by-election on Saturday 10 May 2013. On ABC Radio National, Late Night Life(LNL), an interview was broadcast about the Missing Ethics of Mining. It raised numerous important points about the operations of mines everywhere and their total disregard of people, communities and the environment. You can still listen to it on-line.http://www.abc.net.au/radionational/programs/latenightlive/the-ethics-ofmining/4649556 I attach a copy of the article by Shefa Siegel, the interview was based on.
