Mr. Meddaugh’s U.S. History Immersion: 1930’s Chicago Speakeasy

Students in Dan Meddaugh’s 8th Hour U.S. History Class recreate and experience Chicago in a 1930 speakeasy. Jazz musicians, actresses, Al Capone, flappers, and other businessmen talk of the times, the Depression, Charles Lindbergh, baseball, jazz music, and much more. In this immersion, students not only got the chance to dress the part, but got to experience life in the Jazz Age in a classroom that now acts as a speakeasy. No worries: Only sarsaparilla was served!

Who’s Who at Catholic Central

Dan Meddaugh Here is a quick background on one of our staff members. This month we would like to introduce you to Dan Meddaugh: Dan is one of our two Social Studies teachers here at Catholic Central High School. Upon graduation from UW-Platteville in 2008, Dan student taught here at Catholic Central and when that was finished, we were fortunate enough to hire him as a staff member. A believer in the constructivist approach to learning, Dan finds ways for students to practice the theories learned in the classroom. The most popular of this learning style is the historical immersions in his U.S. History classes. Students learn about the important eras in American History, and then look to recreate them in the classroom. Along with this, Dan is also responsible for and the coordinator of the annual Gettysburg Field Trip in U.S. History class. Dan guides the students on a weekend trip to the hallowed ground for an authentic look at one of the nation’s most famous battle sites. Dan also teaches A.P. Psychology, and his class has surpassed the national pass rate the past two years. In addition to his teaching responsibilities, Dan is also our Senior Class Advisor and served as the Assistant Varsity Boys Basketball Coach for our 2016 State Runner-Up Boys Basketball team. We are truly blessed to have such a dedicated and dynamic person as Dan as part of our Catholic Central Family! Thank you for all that you do! We say goodbye to some fantastic people who have come to love our kids and school: Gail Behrns, Susan Brettingen, Amy Phillips, the retiring Dr. Mark Sheldon and Susan Sheldon and Zach Ziegler. On behalf of Catholic Central High School, thank you for your service to the students, staff and parents of our school. We wish them well in their future endeavors. All will be missed, but we have already hired some dynamic educators that will be ready to engage our students and change their lives!

Way to go Bridgette and Nate!

Students In Service Day

Our Catholic Central High School’s 14th Annual Topper Trot took place this past May 9th. This annual event, sponsored by the Development Office, helps support the operational budget of CCHS and 10% of the profits earned this year (through students gathering pledges) was also given to Love, Inc. This year, students provided community service for two hours at many neighboring schools, businesses and other charitable organizations. Locations included: Bear Realty, Cooper School, Dairy Queen, Dyer School, the Food Pantry Garden, Karcher School, Keuper Mercantile, Love, Inc., Nickolai & Poletti, Our Savior Lutheran, Reineman’s True Value, St. Charles School, St. Mary’s School, Veteran’s Terrace and Waller School. A group of students also helped clean Topper Hall and other areas around the school. Through the efforts of students, parents, faculty, staff and businesses, $5,836 was raised and a profit of $4,052 was earned. Students, faculty and staff wore special t-shirts designed by junior JiIn Choi (printed by World Wide, Ltd.) and opportunities for prizes were given to those who raised $50 or more. The 7th hour classroom that brought in the most donations won movie tickets to the Plaza Theater and those who raised $100 earned a catered lunch provided by Marty’s Restaurant in Waterford. Thank you to everyone who took part. A special thank you to Georgean Selburg, Catholic Central Development Director, for planning and organizing the event!

Design Studio & Art Club Field Trip

Our Catholic Central High School Design Studio class and Art Club recently took a field trip to Milwaukee. There they visited the Milwaukee Institute of Art & Design, ate lunch at The Collectivo Coffee House on Lake Michigan, and finished with a tour of the Milwaukee Art Museum. The students were amazed by the artwork and design work they saw and walked away with an enhanced understanding of quality post secondary art & design education, along with a greater appreciation of professional work of all kinds. They were treated to a special exhibit of the Hudson River School paintings with a focus on the iconic Thomas Cole. And they loved their coffee house lunch experience! It was the final field trip for our own Dr. and Mrs. Sheldon before their May retirement. Both commented that it was the best field trip they can remember. Thank you for everything you’ve done for our students, our staff, and our school from your Catholic Central Family! May you be blessed by the Lord with the same warmth and care you have given, and the impact you have made on countless lives. You will be missed!
