Dear Friends, I am back, having had a wonderful time in the Holy Land! And since I arrived back I have been asked several times what the highlight of my time away was. That’s actually quite a difficult question to answer as there were so many highlights - new archaeological discoveries since I last visited, amazing places of worship to visit, floating in the Dead Sea, watching the sunrise over the Golan Heights, leading evening prayers by the Sea of Galilee …….. But, on reflection I have to say it was the people I met who made this such a wonderful experience. I travelled alongside Christians of all ages and many outlooks from all over the United Kingdom - but even moreso I met Jews, Christians and Muslims who live and work in the Holy Land. The most inspiring of these being those who are passionate about (and even very quietly about) doing good and working to ‘take down the walls’ and heal the divisions and hurts that we as human beings so easily seem to create. Like many who take a holiday or a trip, returning home means getting on with the everyday things again and soon forgetting about being away. But perhaps we don’t forget everything from the journeys we make and take - and indeed the journey of our lives? Rather people, places and experiences shape and influence us along the way. If you would like to see my photos(!) and hear some wonderful stories then watch this space for an event, the date of which is yet to be confirmed! Meanwhile all good wishes, and every blessing in the journeys you make and take.

TWAM Update Many items have been donated over the last month for Tools With A Mission. Thank you to all who have been involved, especially St Mark’s School who hosted the initial event and gave such a warm welcome, entertaining us and even baking cakes – a very memorable coffee morning. £100 was raised eventually and sent to TWAM HQ. So what did we collect? a bicycle, 2 electric sewing machines, a typewriter, various sewing items, saws, planes, sickles, an axe, vices, tool boxes full to overflowing, around 6 boxes of spanners, chisels, hammers etc. etc, not to mention various garden tools also a workmate bench… and lots more… These will be checked and refurbished at one of the 7 centres around the UK and will be taken ultimately to the warehouse in Ipswich. From there they are packed into containers and sent to countries that have requested them. For more information please help yourselves to the leaflets and magazines in church or ask for the CD which shows what happens to the tools. This is an ongoing project. Please don’t feel you have missed the boat! If you still have tools you would like to donate, please contact me on 015395 60198 – it would be better not to take them to church at present as they might well end up being sold at the fete! Christian Aid Week – Result!!! After a roller coaster week our collectors brought in £1,600 in cash and the Coffee Morning raised £345, resulting in a very creditable £1,945. Another £265 will be added to this figure by the taxman from the donations that were giftaided. So THANK YOU to those who gave so generously. Your donations are already banked and will soon be winging their way to provide urgent, practical and effective assistance to those in greatest need in developing countries. Elspeth Jayne 5

Summer Concert
Last year, I asked for prayers for my brother, Adrian, who lives in France. You may remember Adrian suffered a serious back injury when he slipped on the kitchen floor of his home in Normandy in August 2014. I regret to say that Adrian has not recovered from this accident. He has spent most of the last year and a half in and out of hospital. He was making good progress with physiotherapy until last Autumn when a serious of infections resulted in a prolonged period of intensive care in hospital in January; he came very close to death and had to spend three weeks in an induced coma. However, happily now he seems to be clear of all infections and has re-commenced intensive physiotherapy in the hospital where he is likely to be until the beginning of June. When he does return home, he will make twice weekly hospital visits for continuing treatment. The long-term prognosis is that he may be able to walk with the aid of a zimmer frame. I want to thank everyone who has asked me about Adrian’s progress and offered prayers on the family’s behalf. We all hope that later this year Adrian and his wife will once again be able to enjoy life to the full in the peaceful surroundings of the lovely Normandy countryside.
St Mark’s Church Saturday 20th June 7.30pm Our next concert in St Mark’s is entitled simply ‘Music for a Summer Evening’. It’s entirely secular in nature and in addition to the choir we welcome harpist AnnaKate Pearson, and horn players Chris Noble and Tom James. They will join the ladies of the choir in a performance of a lovely set of part-songs by Brahms, and Annakate will play some harp solos. Also on the programme are settings of Edward Lear’s humorous limericks, my own ‘Lakeland Miniatures’ –settings of short verses by a Lakeland poet, Harold Morland – and an unusual piece for speaking chorus. The concert ends with a piece by the popular American composer, Eric Whitacre – his now famous ‘Sleep’. Please join us for this last concert of our 2014-15 season. Programmes (£10) are now available and can obtained from Gill or Clive Walkley (Tel: 01539 723482) Clive Walkley

Continuing our series of articles from the World War One Exhibition by John Chandler:
John Edward Inman John Edward Inman was born in Natland. He was the third child of William Jackson and Isabella Margaret and subsequently the older brother of James Francis who was the subject of last month’s article. At the time of John’s birth in 1888 William was 41 and Isabella 22 and they already had two other sons. William was a stoker at the gunpowder factory and at the time the family lived in the four roomed Powder Works Cottage, Natland. Nothing is known of John’s life except that on the 26th April 1913 he appeared on the passenger list for the Cunard ship Caronia which left Liverpool for New York. The manifest showed that 24 year old John Edward Inman was a blacksmith by trade. Where he lived in North America is not currently known. However, on the 7th May 1915 the S.S. Lusitania inbound from New York was torpedoed near the Irish coast. The Lusitania sank within fifteen minutes with very severe loss of life including that of third class passenger Mr. John Edward Inman who was then aged 26. It is not likely to ever be known but it is possible he was returning to the country of his birth to enlist in the army. Many unidentified bodies were interred in Ireland but along with his brother John’s name is recorded on the Natland War Memorial.

Annual Parish Meeting 2015 Natland – what a place! Perhaps it was bound to be a winning combination – a clutch of eager children from the village school, chocolate biscuits and a rather indifferent May evening – but we were thrilled to see so many people at the Annual Parish Meeting this year, people from right across the village, from Helme Lodge and The Beeches. We began with a fascinating presentation from Peter Barfoot, from St Mark’s School, and his eager school council members, about just some of the things they’ve done together over the past year – the fabulous Lantern Festival (put this year’s date in your diary now (Friday 13 November) and be sure not to miss it), a wild camping trip where the children made their own shelters and cooked on their own fires, a visit to the House of Commons and the National Gallery in London, Chinese drumming.... (School wasn’t like that in my day – I don’t know about yours!) St Mark’s works closely with Appletree School to help them integrate their children into school life and community and Rob Davies, Head of Education at Appletree, followed up with an outline of the great work that they do, here and at their sister school in Grange. After the children had left, other parish institutions and groups then gave their brief reports of what they’ve been up to, what the coming year has in store and how we can all join in or support them. There were some challenges in there – the risk that Natland Guides will close if a new leader cannot be found very quickly and the news that Graham at the shop is beginning to ‘ease up’ meaning that we need to find another location for the post office in the parish over the next few years – but also lots of good news about all the fun (and fundraising) that goes on in our parish. Several people said over juice and biscuits afterwards that they’d lived here for many years and had no idea how much went on. We should definitely get together more often to share our stories and support one another. If you couldn’t make the meeting but would like copies of any of the reports, and can’t access them on the Natland News website, please just get in touch. Lois Sparling, Chair, Natland Parish Council

St Mark’s Summer Fete with a Pirate theme
The signs are out and the publicity is issued, but what can we expect? Well we are going to be entertained by the choir of St Mark’s CE Primary School who have recently performed at the Manchester Arena as part of Young Voices. We will have a range of popular stalls returning, providing you with quality goods from cakes, books to presents for those deserving relatives. If the Fire Brigade are not on call there will be a fire engine to climb on for the younger members and some games organised with a huge parachute. Many people wonder about the view from the top of the church tower and, for a donation, we will be organising access to the tower with the opportunity to take pictures. We are expecting this to fill up very quickly so make sure you bring a camera and arrive early. We have games, a tombola, afternoon teas and ice creams. Our raffle already includes high quality prizes with family tickets to Windermere Cruises, Blackwell House, Ullswater Steamers and a Meal Voucher kindly donated by the Station Inn. More will come in and there will be bottles and chocolates as well, so don’t forget to see Edward Lawton and his family early when you arrive. If you come in fancy dress you get free entry to the Fete and all children are free too. We will have judging in three categories for best costume, with prizes for all taking part. We just wait on the weather but if it is raining we will be having as much fun in the Village Hall. Please come along and join in and if you have anything you may wish to donate please either leave it at the back of church or bring it to the Vicarage. Thank you for your support. Andrew Whittaker (Fete Organiser) 12
BOILER APPEAL ANNOUNCEMENT Dear Friends, Regular readers of ‘Parish News’ will be aware that our twenty-five year old heating boilers have reached the end of their useful lives and need replacing before winter. After fully exploring the fuel options and seeking several quotations the Parochial Church Council has accepted a quote at a cost of £14,704.00 net of VAT. Fortunately VAT will, we believe, be recoverable from the Government. As well as new boilers the quote includes a new pump, thermostat and ancillary equipment and we are hopeful that the new system will be more fuel efficient and reduce our annual cost of gas. Readers will also probably be aware that we had an unexpected bill last year of over £10,000.00 for extensive essential drainage works in the churchyard and this was paid for substantially out of reserves. In view of the cost of the new boilers the PCC has decided to make a special appeal to those connected with the church to consider making a contribution towards the cost. We decided that it was preferable to make such an appeal and hopefully raise the money in this way rather than have to extend yet further our fund raising activities which already have a target of £5,000.00 each year to balance the church accounts. We are pleased to say that we already have over £1,500.00 towards the total cost which came from a collection at a funeral and fundraising activities in the spring. Please consider making a donation to this appeal. Overleaf are details of various ways in which a donation can be made - and this page is in the centre of this edition so that you can detach the donation form if you wish. Thank you for your support of St Mark’s Church - and in anticipation of your continuing support. Angela Whittaker (on behalf of the Parochial Church Council) 13

St Mark’s School News For if you forgive men who sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.’ Matthew 6 v. 14
Our current theme in school is forgiveness. Hugely important, yet so difficult in practice ! Using the teaching and examples of Jesus, through the parables and his sacrifice on the cross, we have tried to share with the children how important it is. If God is to forgive us, we must forgive each other. This has been very challenging. So much of school life is the management and development of relationships. We have a strong Code of Conduct operating in school. There are 13 statements, all built around positive actions describing how we expect everyone in school to act. They cover the ways in which we move, talk, relate, listen, support, work and treat others and the school environment. Each term we try to link the current Christian value focus to the Code of Conduct, refreshing the list and reviewing our expectations. It is a powerful and effective tool. Most issues to do with relationships and behaviour can be dealt with by referring to the Code. One of the most repeated rules is to do with how we would like children to speak to each other and to adults. We provide a mental checklist of three questions to be asked before anyone speaks: is what you are about to say true ? is it kind ? and is it necessary ? This is very much an aspiration ! If most of us managed to check everything we were about to say against this list the world might be a much quieter place. Would that be a bad thing ? Our thoughts and words are powerful. They can build up or knock down and destroy. Attempting to teach children to wield that power wisely is surely one of the most important roles a school can have. Equally, if we do not manage to control what we say then we need to know how to deal with the consequences. This makes the ability to forgive, and to ask for forgiveness, a high priority. Our key verse is very useful in this regard, and forms a major part of the Lord’s Prayer. For God, our willingness to forgive others is a prerequisite of his own forgiveness which in turn unlocks all of God’s love, mercy and grace in our lives. There is no way around the fact that we have to forgive if we are to truly live in the fullness of everything God has for us. We are very fortunate in school that relationships between the children, the staff team, the Governing Body and the parents are generally very good. When things go wrong (Continued on page 17)
16
(St Mark’s School News continued from page 16)
we work hard to reconcile differences and talk issues through face to face. But the school is made up of people and we do not always get everything right. If we are to continue to provide a safe, happy, caring and inspiring environment in which all children and staff can flourish then honesty and forgiveness are fundamental. Please pray for the school. Your support and encouragement are valued, as are your prayers for God to provide the inner strength and wisdom to both model and encourage forgiveness. Peter Barfoot Headteacher
PRAYERS Please pray for all those who are ill. Please pray for those who mourn. Please pray for those preparing to be baptised, confirmed or married over the coming months.
St Barnabas Day ~ 11th June Free us, Lord, from a spirit of cynicism or the desire to condemn, and make us, like Barnabas, generous in our judgements, bold in trusting others, and loyal to our friends. Fill us with your spirit of peace, that we may be a source of support and comfort to all in need, for your love’s sake. Amen. By Angela Ashwin
St John the Baptist ~ 24th June Merciful Lord, whose prophet John the Baptist proclaimed your Son as the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world: grant that we knowing your forgiveness and your life giving love may ever tell of your mercy and your peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. From a Prayer after Communion on the Feast of St John the Baptist
God for all, you reached out to the world in your Son Jesus Christ. Help us to reach out in faith and love and witness to all. God for all, you send your Holy Spirit to empower and gift your Church. By your Spirit help us, grow in unity, grow as followers of Jesus Christ, and grow your kingdom in Cumbria and in this world. Amen 17

Car Travel Tips As the holiday season is upon us, here’s a couple of travel tips that may help you get about more easily. From 8 June, the DVLA is abolishing the paper counterpart of the UK photocard licences. All endorsements, such a speeding offences, will be held electronically. If you commit an offence you will still have to pay any applicable fine and submit your licence to the court, but endorsements will no longer be recorded on the paper counterpart. You can view your record online, or request a copy by post (see www.gov.uk and type ‘View your driving licence information’ in the search box). All of this means if you want to hire a vehicle, then you will no longer be able to show your paper counterpart or paper licence (pre- 1998). Instead you must obtain a unique access code (which expires after 72 hours) from the ‘Share your Licence’ online service and give this to the hire company along with the last 8 digits of your driving licence number. Alternatively you can call DVLA on 09061 393 837 and give permission for your driving record to be checked verbally by a nominated person/ organization, but this may be difficult overseas or out of hours. A video explaining it all is available at www.gov.uk/government/news/drivinglicence-changes Closer to home, did you know that Cumbria County Council have a ‘Highways Hotline’? Phone them on 0845 609 6609 to report potholes, faulty traffic and street lights, anything to do with the condition of our roads. It’s helpful if you have the precise location and the 3 number digit on the nearest lamppost. You can also report online, go to www.cumbria.gov.uk click on ‘roads and travel’ then ‘report a problem/ issue’. Free, confidential advice and help is available from South Lakes Citizens Advice Bureau on any aspect of debt, benefits, housing, employment, consumer problems and any other problems. We have various outlets across South Lakeland and can also give advice over the phone – telephone 015394 46464 for an appointment and help. 19

Time to Spring into action Spring is here! It’s time to get out in the fresh air and help give Natland a fresh and cared-for look. As a Natland Volunteer, you can help by taking on ‘stewardship’ of a particular footpath within the parish. This would involve clearing any obstructive woody growth, brambles and nettles, particularly at stiles and gates, and then re-visiting every few weeks until the autumn to deal with re-growth. This should then encourage walkers to make greater use of these paths and their footfall will keep the softer growth in check. Or you could suggest other aspects of parish maintenance that you feel need attention, from individuals or small teams of volunteers, or a more substantial project that could be tackled by a working group. To volunteer, find out more about what is involved, or send in your suggestions, just email Sarah ([email protected] ) or phone her on 015393 61617. Thank you for offering your time to look after the parish. Sarah and Lois (your parish councillors)
Mothers A Mum is a great teacher. Here are a few examples of what she taught: About stamina: “You’ll sit there until all that spinach is finished.” Religion: “You’d better pray that will come out of the carpet.” The weather: “It looks as if a tornado swept through your room.” About hypocrisy: “If I’ve told you once, I’ve told you a million times, don’t exaggerate.” Logic: “Because I said so, that’s why” To appreciate a job well done: “If you’re going to kill each other, do it outside, I’ve just finished cleaning.” About travel: “If you don’t straighten up, I’m going to knock you into the middle of next week.” I’m sure you’ve heard them all………….and many more. contributed by Norma and Paul Singleton 21
