Background In agricultural context, cutting edge technologies emerging from recent advances in genomics and biotechnology are promising new avenues of increasing yields, abating biotic and abiotic stresses and harnessing new products from agriculture that will add to meagre sources of farming communities of SAARC countries. SAARC region is in lime light of world’s attention not only for emerging economies and new opportunities but also for world’s fastest population growth rate. Feeding and clothing such a large number of people is posing a greater challenge than ever on scientific community of this region. A sole effort by a single nation will not be enough for solving this problem. A regional problem must be solved on regional level. Therefore, joining hands will usher a new era of cooperation in SAARC that will help more effectively for combating poverty and food security for the region through biotechnology.
National Institute for Genomics and Advanced Biotechnology (NIGAB) NIGAB has been established at NARC, Islamabad. NARC is the largest establishment of PARC, an apex agricultural organization of the Pakistan. NIGAB is engaged in modern research technologies and problem-oriented research objectives. Cutting-edge technologies used in the area of DNA recombination, transcriptomics, proteomics marker-assisted breeding and genetic transformation of desirable genes is being employed for gene isolation, diagnostic tests and production of transgenic plants. Besides, cis-genome of crop plants is being scanned for identification conserved regulatory elements involved in gene regulation. Among 25 institutes/programs of NARC, NIGAB has won the best program award for consecutive 3 years (2008-11). NIGAB successfully organized its first international conference during March 2008 in collaboration with National Commission on Biotechnology (NCB). It has also conducted a thematic workshop on “Recent Advances in Plant Abiotic Stress Tolerance” at COMSTECH during March 2009. This activity is continued and it is now planned to hold a SAARC level conference to share the results and ideas, and streamlining the future research on agricultural genomics and biotechnology.
