Long days, short nights, bright flowers, and smiles abound! I just returned from an afternoon of ATV-riding on some logging roads and marveled at the 10 mile views – seeing varying green colors that indicate the patchwork of old growth, young growth, and fresh cut areas. Saw a spruce grouse, a mama doe with her newborn fawn, and evidence of bears nearby. A little sun, a little mist, and lots of fresh air. Enjoyed it all. So glad there was good weather for the marathon this past weekend. I hope you all have the opportunity to get outdoors many times this month and enjoy – so many events on this month’s calendar. And if you don’t see what you like there, just grab your Island Guide and find a new spot to explore! Encourage your visitors to use the MyChamberApp (mca) and see if you find it helpful when you travel, as well. Send us news about your business so we can help spread the good word. And pass this newsletter on to others to share the great things about our island. Sharilyn

2017 Prince of Wales Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Awards by Jeannie McFarland Thorne Bay ‘17 Grads!
Thorne Bay Curtis Clower Scholarship Recipient!
The Prince of Wales Chamber of Commerce has awarded 10 scholarships to graduates all over Prince of Wales Island this year. When I look at the list of the recipients, I see about half plan to stay in Alaska to pursue their goals. These scholarships are available because of the 21 businesses and individuals that have pledged full or partial underwritings, many of them every year for the 20 years the Chamber has sponsored this program. In those 20 years, over 250 Prince of Wales Island students have used the scholarship they earned. As a member of the Chamber of Commerce I had the honor of awarding one of these scholarships to a Thorne Bay School Graduate. This scholarship comes with a few strings attached that mirror life itself. The student will need to follow up by finishing the first quarter or semester of their education with a minimum GPA of 2.0, and a plan to continue that education. The $500 scholarship will be sent to their school or program to defray costs for the next quarter or semester.
The Chamber and the businesses that support this program were pleased to award Curtis Clowar a $500 scholarship to help him achieve his goals. Craig 2017 Grads Mason Hoppe Scholarship Recipient

POWCAC met in Klawock for its May 23rd meeting. Jon Bolling gave a recap of the efforts of the POWLAT committee over the past nine months. At its May 18th and 19th meetings, POWLAT finalized its list of projects to be submitted to the US Forest Service of Prince of Wales for recommended action in the next ten to fifteen years. This list of projects includes timber cutting, stream restoration efforts, and many recreational enhancements, along with recommendations for youth employment, and many other ideas. The document is being fine-tuned and will be sent out to POWLAT members for final comment around June 1st. Meetings were well attended throughout this past year, and comments were made about how successful this group was – at bringing many different visions to the table, and respectfully working together to build consensus on the final product. Those of us attending certainly appreciate the information sharing that took place between the USFS and the POWLAT members. Both sides learned a lot! Keep watching the Web site for the final document sometime in June. www.powcac.org/otherprojects/ And watch for meetings to start again in the fall. In other business, POWCAC reviewed a draft letter prepared by Misty Fitzpatrick regarding telecommunications on the island, to be sent to state legislators. She was assisted by several others over the past two months, gathering internet/cell phone speed data across the island, to document the current state of our island’s communication abilities. Misty has been working closely with the staff from Jonathan Kriess-Tomkins’ office on this issue, to look for ways to improve telecommunications on the island – knowing how important it is for commerce and for the health and well-being of residents on Prince of Wales. The next POWCAC meeting will be July 25th in Whale Pass. And September’s meeting will be in Hollis.

25 YEARS EXPERIENCE
The Cycle of Violence Some may think that perpetrators of domestic violence just “snap” when they become abusive. However, experts have studied the behaviors of abusers and there are usually clear cyclical patterns in their behaviors and relationships with victims. Below is a common “Cycle of Violence” for a perpetrator: Incident Any type of abuse occurs (physical/sexual/emotional) Tension Building Abuser starts to get angry Abuse may begin There is a breakdown of communication Victim feels the need to keep the abuser calm Tension becomes too much Victim feels like they are 'walking on egg shells' Making-Up Abuser may apologize for abuse Abuser may promise it will never happen again Abuser may blame the victim for causing the abuse Abuser may deny abuse took place or say it was not as bad as the victim claims Calm Abuser acts like the abuse never happened Physical abuse may not be taking place Promises made during 'making-up' may be met Victim may hope that the abuse is over Abuser may give gifts to victim The cycle can happen hundreds of times in an abusive relationship. Each stage lasts a different amount of time in a relationship. The total cycle can take anywhere from a few hours to a year or more to complete. It is important to remember that not all domestic violence relationships fit the cycle. Often, as time goes on, the 'making-up' and 'calm' stages disappear. If you are suffering in an abusive relationship, call HOPE for support at 907-826-4673. You may also drop by the HOPE office at 404 Spruce Street in Craig. Domesticviolence.org adapted this list from the original concept of: Walker, Lenore.

I look forward to receiving the Guide. My wife and I made our first trip to Alaska in 2014. While the major impetus was to visit a friend who lives in Larsen Bay, Kodiak Island, we took over 6 weeks to enjoy Yukon, including Tombstone, Top of World Hwy, and on down to Homer for the AMH to Kodiak. Gathering materials, including the MILEPOST, I spent 2 years reading everything I could find, from mysteries to history to travel guides. I am a hopeless “student”, and fascinated with the North. We enjoyed the AMH ride so much that we began looking at the various routes and learning more about various coastal communities, including Ketchikan and POW Island. A year from now I will be retiring, and we hope to take a summer long trip to visit places where we didn’t spend enough time, and then to take the AMH from Skagway back to Bellingham with stops on the way – Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan – probably a week in the first and last. We pull a 13’ Scamp – fiberglass hardshell camper that we love. The idea now is to catch the ferry from Ketchikan upon arrival to head over to POW for maybe 5 days. Plans are to camp in a national forest campground (early/ mid Sept), and visit scenic, historical, cultural areas. My hobby is photography which gives me something to do when touring or hiking. I will remember to mention the POW Chamber with any further contacts. And thanks for your comments on various campgrounds. We look forward to visiting. To specifically answer your question, probably the first and most influential source was THE MILEPOST. Sam & Bobbi Holiday West Bend, WI

Summer Fun, Summer Activities
It’s the Beautiful Kasaan by the Sea Fun Run/Walk It is beautiful. It is by the sea. It is the Beautiful Kasaan by the Sea Fun Run/Walk on Saturday, June 10. This free, fun summer activity will start at 10:00 that Saturday morning in front of the Totem Trial Café. Registration opens at 9:30. The Kasaan EMS Squad, the POW Wellness Coalition, and the Prince of Wales Runners/Walkers Club are working together to coordinate this event and have some special treats planned, including prizes for kids and adults. Probably the best treat will be the home cooked breakfast following this fun run/walk. You can expect scrambled eggs, bacon, waffles, fresh strawberries, as well as beverages – all prepared by the Kasaan EMS Squad. And the expansive water view from the Totem Trail Café simply cannot be beat. Various mileage options from one mile to a 5k will be offered so as to meet the needs of all runners and walkers of every age and ability. And although there is no registration fee for taking part in this event, donations will be accepted and will go directly to the Kasaan EMS Squad to help them meet their emergency supply needs. So by June 10, the marathon will be a two-week distant memory, your reverse taper will be ending, and it will be time to dust off the running/walking shoes for your summer activities. Get a grand start on your summer and come join in the fun, eat a delicious breakfast and maybe even take a post-race stroll to view the majestic Whale House and its surrounding totem poles. They are beautiful. They are by the sea.
