PR E SI D E N T’ S L E TTE R Well, another flying season is upon us. A great weekend in Nashville in early May. A great turn out and fabulous continuing education program, thanks Amy and Rachael! Now, I sit back and think about the year gone by, a few President letters under my belt and what the Flying Dentists Association means to my family and me. It is all about the family and the up and coming National Convention is going to bring that happy family back together again. Looks to be a great outing for all. Thanks Ray and Kathy Rhoades!!!!! It has been a year since the safety committee chairman awarded me the LightSpeed Zulu PFX Headset. Well, let me tell you that it turned into the First Ladies Headset. She put it on after the wonderful Michigan National Convention and never let me have a chance at trying it out! I was an avid Bose X wearer. I thought that wow if Kate likes this headset so much I better get one too! So off to the LightSpeed web site I go. Ordered up a panel powered LightSpeed Zulu PFX Headset. I really feel much more comfortable wearing this headset and the noise canceling feature is quite remarkable. I hear that there is blue tooth capabilities but me being “Tech, NOT so Savy” have not tried that feature.

Who needs to use the cell phone in the airplane anyway! Oh, I hear you can receive music through the thing as well but I’m a full attention pilot and love the sounds of Air Traffic Control. Now that is Music to my ears!!! As you can tell I am very happy with my LightSpeed Zulu PFX headset and I feel the next recipient of the headset will be as pleased as I have been. Yes, Steve has another headset on the way to be graciously given to our wonderful Dental Pilot friendly community by the LightSpeed company! Thank you LightSpeed. Remember to get your CFI to instruct you in one hour of competent flight training. You will be a better pilot for it and also have a chance to receive a great headset! A year has gone by and as I finish my last Presidential Note to the group I want to thank you for allowing me to be at the helm of this wonderful group. We, as a group, have been instrumental in forwarding letters off to the appropriate Senators and House Members to get the Pilots Bill of Rights II passed. It is still in limbo but hopeful something will come of it.

see if there is interest in that happening every so often. I will discuss that at the meetings in Cody. There was a discussion a few years ago and it went by the wayside but after discussing things with Dr, Doug Johnson, MD; President of The Flying Physicians he had a grass root survey done with his constituents and they had a very large (>90%) response from his group that some sort of collaborative meeting should be accomplished. I told him that I was not going to speak for the FDA but would bring this idea to the membership. Think about this for discussions in Cody!! I am really looking forward to a relaxing National Convention in Cody, WY! Remember to Keep the Oily Side Down and Gear Extended to Land Bart and Kate Bycroft

I have been in early talks with the Flying Physicians to see if we can have a possible combined meeting to

FLYING FDA Regional News Central District What a great time we had in Nashville! No shortage of fun folks and entertainment everywhere you’d look… from my quest to eat chicken and waffles every chance I got, to lunch at Acme Seed and Feed, to hitting up all of Billy Forbess’s regular hangouts, it was a truly fun weekend. Thank you all for your gracious attention during our CE presentation, we so appreciated the chance to share with you. Many of you met my partner, Rachel Driscoll, DDS, and you’ll see her again at future trips… let’s seal her up as a new member already!! Cannot wait to see so many in Cody and hope many are thinking of heading to: Canada for fishing, the fly-in that Bart Bycroft and Brian Schaulis are putting together for August 5-7 in Salina to live your dreams at the Smoky Hill Bomb Range and play out all your boyhood fighter pilot dreams, duck hunting in North Carolina, and adventuring to Cuba… Safe Travels, Amy (Rhoades) Hahn

Western District With only a few short weeks to go until the National Meeting in Cody, I’m guessing that everyone who is going has made their travel plans and arrangements already. If you haven’t, Stacy can probably still help; last minute folks just ask her, I don’t think she bites. Being a “Western District” person, a mountain pilot, and also due to the fact that the Western District of the FDA has the smallest number of members (what’s up with that?), I have made a list of Do’s and Don’ts for all of the attendees coming from East of the Rockies (the big mountains you will be flying towards). Please take this in the spirit of which it is written. • DO – fly in the morning if possible and be aware of afternoon weather buildups. • DON’T – fly into Cumulonimbus clouds (even if you like roller coasters and your life insurance is paid up) • DO – review your mountain flying procedures – check density altitudes, lean for best power if applicable, and cross ridges at 45 degrees. This and more will be in the mountain flying course. • DON’T – Call law enforcement if witnessing a reenactment of an old west gun fight in the street • DO – take in area sights and activities. Touring the Park, hiking, fishing, shooting, golf, and rafting are just a few things that the area has to offer. • DON’T – get out of your car to feed, pet, or take pictures of the bears, the buffalo or other wildlife. • DO – have a great time with like-minded colleagues, catch up with old friends and meet new ones. • DON’T – ‘rescue’ apparently stranded baby buffalo, putting them in your car and taking them to the animal shelter. • DO – fly safe and know that I’ll be looking forward to seeing everyone there. I hope everyone has a safe and smooth trip. See you in Cody. Blue skies or centered approach needles, Bill Holmes

Milestones

At our fall board meeting in New Orleans, it was mentioned that we all enjoy hearing good news and significant happening amongst our membership. We communicate sad news of passings and illness so we may offer support to one another, but we don’t always get to catch up on the happier news in a timely way. Think of the smiles you’d find reading about your friends’ good news – graduations, careers beginning, retirements, children and grandchildren’s arrivals, new flight level certifications, new hobbies you’re enjoying, cool travel stories, etc.. The Milestones Committee was an idea hatched out of desire to celebrate one another’s lives and focus on the good things. It will also be a nice showcase for potential new members to see our true family that lies within the organization; they can see how we all connect, care, and bond over the years. SO: if you would kindly send myself your good news, anything you’re proud to share, want to shout from the mountaintops, please do! [email protected]

I’ll start it off - I just celebrated my 10th year anniversary with Rambo (Beau), and also my 10th year graduation from dental school anniversary with classmate and partner, Rachel Driscoll. We celebrated with y’all in Nashville. ;) Looking forward to hearing from all you amazing goal-crushers! Amy (Rhoades) Hahn

F L Y I N G SAF E Just a three more weeks till we have the culmination of rewarding a years worth of proficiency training. As has been mentioned, Lightspeed is giving away their PFX headset to a member in attendance during the Closing Banquet Monday evening. This member has to have had instruction in an aircraft during the last 12 months and had the CFI document in the logbook. I will not be getting to Cody till Sunday so an alternative method of getting me logbook entries is to email a copy to me before the meeting.

MEMBER’S MAILBOX Dr. Paul Spenadel

S W NE We received the sad news this past month that our long time member and avid meeting attendee Dr. Paul Spenadel past away. Dr. Spenadel has worked in the Dental Department at Jamaica Hospital Medical Center (Long Island, NY) since he graduated from there in the 70’s. We have all shared some great stories about Dr. Paul. I thought I would add one of my own. Dr. Paul was one of the first calls I received from a FDA member 4 years ago when I took over as Executive Director. He welcomed me to the FDA ,and asked for my assistance in planning his trip out to Steamboat Springs for the National Meeting. As promised I helped him and Elena get to Colorado, and we became fast friends. I called him Dr. Paul. I knew as soon as we posted our next year's National meeting and dive trip he would be one of the first calls I would get. He would say" Well, I am not getting any younger so you better sign me up".

Interview with Dr. Paul Spenadel Being a member of the Flying Dentists has been only one of the amazing things Dr. Paul Spenadel has done throughout his lifetime. Dr. Paul, as I call him, has been a member of the Flying Dentists since 1980 and in all those 34 years, he has attended every National Meeting with the exception of two. He began his piloting career as a volunteer in 1942. He was a WWII Night Flyer with anti-aircraft pilot training under his belt. In 1954 with his GI bill he started Dental school and is still

During our dive trip to San Salvador I got to spend more time with Dr. Paul and Elena and was amazed to hear all about his life prior to his illustrious dental career and the many years he spent in this field. I was amazed that at 90 he was still helping out in New York where he lived. I have attached the interview I did with he and Elena on that trip. I hope you enjoy reading about one of our amazing members. Dr. Paul, you will be missed by everyone in the FDA family, patients and all the lives that he touched during his most amazing and fulfilling life. Your Travel Friend, Stacy

working today at age 90. You can still find him working at Jamaica hospital running the nursing home dental program. His favorite plane was a Piper Lance. Nowadays, you will see Dr. Paul attending the meetings, and fly in’s, dive trips with his good friend and companion Elena Agranovsky. Elena was born in Belarus 4 years before the war broke out. Her family escape to Kazakhstan just as the Germans were coming into Belarus. In 1954 Elena started Medical School and since then has earned a Ph.D. in

immunology. She has worked as a senior researcher & Immunologist. If you ever get a chance, please sit down and talk to her about her life story. What an Amazing Lady! When I asked Dr. Paul, what was his most memorial moment with the Flying Dentists, he smiled and said, “Making so many great friends and being able to see this beautiful country of ours”. So when you attend your next FDA fly-in, or National Meeting, make sure you make time to sit down and talk to these two. They will be there. Smiles and all!
