MISSION At Vanier Elementary School, we are committed to fostering lifelong learning in an atmosphere of caring and mutual respect, which encourages personal achievement and development, and promotes a sense of responsibility to society and the world. VISION

Liberty, the Therapy Horse, goes to school

Honouring long-time volunteers who have 10+ years of service

Dear Parents/Caregivers,

Learning, sharing, During the month of May, our school celebrated Project Peace Day, which is the culminagrowing—preparing for tion of our work in the area of Character Development. The day started with a parade of the future

En apprenant, en partageant, en grandissant—on se prépare pour l’avenir Vanier Sea Star Song I am a Sea Star At Vanier. I follow our matrix Each and every day. In the bathroom, the hallway, At gym and music too, Playground and classroom Respect for me and you. I am RESPONSIBLE SAFE and KIND, RESPECTFUL and POSITIVE, In school and online. And then I am proud When I look up and see, I earned a Sea Star I'm the best I can be! I am a Sea Star, I’m the best I can be!

our Peaceful Schools Flag and our Kids Eat Smart Walk to Breakfast. A special breakfast was prepared for all our students by our amazing volunteers. Sessions were held for primary and elementary. A therapy horse named Liberty came to our school. Our grade six students demonstrated CPR from their Tree of Life program. We learned about differing abilities, human rights, autism, positive mental health, and boat safety. And in the afternoon, we honoured four long-time volunteers who have all served over ten years at Vanier. Ms. Jane Barrett, Mr. Bob Gregory, Ms. Kathy Merlo, and Ms. Kathy Pollett, we appreciate all you have done and continue to do for us. Mr. Bernard Davis, MHA, and his assistant Tari Amaji were on hand to present these volunteer awards. Project Peace Day ended with a special photo of our staff and students forming the peace sign. Other highlights in May include an author visit from Maureen Fergus, the Earth Rangers who introduced us to several Canadian species at risk, the Rotary Music Festival, and the MUN Opera Road Show. Our Sports Day at the Techniplex was a huge success! And our Kindergarten students showed a large audience how much they have learned this year, and how ready they are for Premiere année/Grade One. In June, we get ready to say goodbye to our grade six students. We have worked together for seven years and have watched you grow and blossom. You are ready for junior high and have plenty of talent and skills that will serve you well there and beyond. May Grade Seven present the academic challenges we know you can meet, new friends to share and happy experiences to embrace. Thank you to the families of our grade six students for all the support you have shown us at Vanier. We wish you all well, and look forward to seeing you when you come back to visit us. June is a busy month with many year-end activities to enjoy and successes to celebrate. We look forward to fun-filled learning experiences together in the weeks to come, as we bring 2015-2016 to a close. Please note, school will close at 12:30 on Thursday, June 23rd and re-open for the 2016-17 year on Wednesday, September 7th. It has been a pleasure learning and working with you this year. We hope you all enjoy a safe and happy summer. Administration and Staff, Vanier Elementary

We are so grateful for the incredible amount of support that you have given our Breakfast Club. A special thank you goes out to our Organizing Committee and our daily volunteers, shoppers, planners, fundraising volunteers, and organizers. Without you, our club would not have been the success that it has been. Thank you as well to all of the families who supported our many fundraisers throughout the year, from our Fill the Cupboard challenges, to our recycling blitzes and our Walk to Breakfast, you have gone above and beyond to show how much you value the club. We look forward to starting our Breakfast Club up again early in the fall, and we welcome all of our volunteers back, and are certainly open to new volunteers. Thank you again! KIDS EAT SMART APPLE DAY This Friday, June 3rd, is a special day for our Breakfast Club because we will be celebrating Kids Eat Smart Apple Day! This is a fantastic opportunity to promote delicious and nutritious apples as a healthful part of breakfast, and a great snack! We are asking all students to wear red, green or yellow to represent their favourite type of apple. As well, our Breakfast Club will be serving yummy apple-themed breakfast snacks on that morning. FUNDRAISING REPORT

Thank you to our Grade 5s who brought in more than 20 healthy breakfast items for our Breakfast Club, and our Grade 6s who brought in 75 healthy breakfast items for our Breakfast Club during our Fill the Cupboard Challenge. Our Walk to Breakfast brought in a whopping $440! Many thanks to all who participated and all who contributed. RECYCLING BLITZES REPORT Thank you so much for your support with our Saturday recycling biltzes. We have raised almost $500 from our blitzes to date. We would like to congratulate all of our players for their fantastic successes over the year and all their hard work learning new skills. We will celebrate with snacks, prizes, and a simultaneous chess tournament against our coaches. We hope to see you all there! THANK YOU, CHESS VOLUNTEERS! This year, our Chess Club was very fortunate to have volunteers step forward to continue the strong tradition of Saturday morning chess at Vanier. We wish to thank these volunteers: Gillian Lahoda and Twila Reid for your commitment of time, assistance, and organization; Miriam Sheppard for your regular support and your extra assistance with the canteen; Michael Pickard for your kind assistance, especially in teaching our brand new players. Without you, our club would definitely not have achieved the success it continues to enjoy. A big thank you as well to Mr. Gregory, who ran the Vanier Open and Closed Tournaments, and was an advisor to the volunteers, and always readily available and willing to lend a helping hand. We are grateful to each and every one of you for teaching our students the important skills learned through chess.

VANIER GARDEN CLUB NEWS The Garden Club is very excited about the upcoming growing season! A committee made up of teacher/ parent representatives is organizing the crops and plans for this year. If any parents are interested in helping with the garden, you may wish to join the Facebook group, Vanier Garden Club - Parent Page. Just search this group name on Facebook and ask to join. This is how the committee will connect with parents to help keep the garden growing now and over the summer. If parents wish to be involved, but don't have Facebook, they can email Lori Greene at [email protected] who will maintain an email list for updates as well. Thank you to our Club! It is very exciting to bring learning across the curriculum to the garden context, and our students and teachers look forward to working the garden!
