MEETING

SATURDAY JUNE 18 1-3pm MOANA NURSERY

Musings from the President I love Nevada and especially the dramatic skies and cloud formations we get over the mountains in the east and the high Sierras in the west. I am reminded of Ovanes Berberian who paints striking sunsets and skies (among other things)and is one of America’s foremost painters today. He was born in Alaverdy, Armenia, Russia in 1951. His father was an important and noted artist in Russia, a member of the American Artists’ Society, as well as a theatrical set designer and college art teacher. It was in this environment, studying at his father’s art school, that Ovanes achieved the greater portion of his art education. In the summer of 1977, after the death of his father, the Berberian family, three brothers with their mother, migrated to the United States and settled in California. In 1981 the artist was awarded a scholarship to further his study in painting techniques with the late master painter and teacher, Sergei Bongart, in Rexburg, Idaho. Ovanes, a plein aire artist and respected teacher, is considered to be on the the forefront of American art scene. His deep understanding of hue, value and color relationships and his unique application of paint make him sought after not only by collectors, but by students who come from all over for a chance to attend one of his workshops. He chooses to paint on location, inspired by a direct interaction with his subject, but he is not committed to painting exactly what he sees … he will blend and bend. He states unequivocally that in painting, the most important thing is color harmony. Ovanes' use of color, combined with his dynamic, painterly style is startling, captivating his many viewers. Berberian's paintings are held in numerous private and public collections. Upcoming Shows

"Inside and Out" Artown Exhibit at FUMC Hope you all have been working on your paintings for the upcoming Artown exhibit at First United Methodist Church downtown at First and West Streets. The subject matter can be landscapes, still lifes, or portraits (preferably showing emotion), or a combination, such as a landscape through an open window, a still life with a view of the outside, etc. Since security is an issue, we are asking all exhibiting members to "art-sit" at least one day or two half days. Evening Concerts will be on Tuesday and Thursday at 7pm, and sitting from 6:30 to 8:30 on these nights will count as a half day. Please contact Linda Walker at 857-1235 or John Denton at 925-285-5240. The sign-up sheet will also be available at our June meeting, so bring your calendars. Entry forms will be at the next meeting as well as on our web page. Entry day is Thursday, June 30 from 10 to 1pm. Take down will be Monday, August 1st from 10 to 12 noon. Approximate space for each exhibitor would allow for two large paintings 18”x24” to 26”x 34”, three medium paintings 11”x14” to 16”x20”, or four small paintings 9”x12” to 11”x14”, with a maximum of 4 entries. The hanging committee will make the final decisions as to space and appropriateness of artwork. Frames must be free of nicks and scratches. Sawtooth hangers, duck tape and masking tape not are allowed, and wooden frames must have dust covers. Non art-sitters will be charged an extra $10 with the money going to the church or the Scholarship Fund. We are again asking for some donated artwork that we can sell on a separate display with proceeds going to our scholarship fund. They may be original art, giclees or prints, framed or matted. Donations to the Scholarship Fund should be clearly marked with a D.

Latimer Miniature Show "Nevada: Don't Fence Me In!" is our title for our 9th annual miniature show! It will run from October 15 to December 10, with entry day Wed. Oct. 5th from 11am to 2pm at NHS, 1650 N. Virginia St. Our reception is on Saturday October 15 from 5-6:30pm. We have made a change from our Friday night routine because the Wild Women reception is on Friday, and we want to get the word out to these artists to promote for us! Our judge and juror is Patricia Wallis (patriciawallis.com), who happens to be part of the Wild Women group! She has volunteered to "donate" her judging fee back to the club! By the time you read this newsletter, the prospectus should be on our website! I am asking each and every one of you to think of non-Latimer members to get the prospectus to, and to give me their contact information so I can put them in a database and follow up! We are hoping to get more out-of-area entries this year. The prizes are starting to come in already. Those of you who have volunteered to help, will be contacted about distributing prospectuses, entry day, reception, take-down, etc. Thank you in advance for helping make this our best and biggest miniature show ever!
