My name is Mindy Izzo and I am the new Director of Admissions at Peoria Notre Dame. I am thrilled to be a part of the PND family! I came to PND because of it’s outstanding reputation as both an educational institution as well its ability to both teach and demonstrate Christian principles on a daily basis. Catholic education is something I am truly passionate about, and I am honored to be doing something that I absolutely love. Every day I get to meet new people and show them all of the great things that are happening in the halls at PND!

Hello! My name is Nathan Young, and I am the new biology teacher here at PND. I grew up in Groveland, IL, and celebrated mass at Blessed Sacrament while I was in grade school and high school in Morton. During high school, I was involved with WYSE team, Project Lead the Way, and I ran cross country and track all four years. When I went on to study Chemistry Education at Greenville College, I ran cross country and track there as well. Since graduating from college, I have returned to Blessed Sacrament to help with the Youth Group and Religious Education,

Prior to PND I worked at Bradley University and Joliet Catholic Academy in Joliet, Illinois. I am a member of be getting married in September. I wish everyone a very restful and relaxing summer and look forward to the many events we have going school year. Go Irish!

accompanying a group of high school students to Catholic Heart Workcamp in the summers of 2011 and 2013, and in mid-June we will be going to Cincinnati. My passion for science is rooted in a love of inquiry and rational thought, as well as the understanding that not all students love science. In fact, science is usually given a bad reputation by students who struggle or simply don’t see its usefulness, yet that does not need to be the case. My goal therefore, is to show students of varying ability levels that science is not only approachable but deeply rooted in our daily lives. In fact, I view science as indirect cooperation with God’s amazing creation, and I see Proverbs 25:2 as a necessary reality and gift to any true believer in Christ.

Spanish Honor’s Project Mrs. Ulrich had an exciting project in Spanish 4B Honors this trimester. The students explored the works of Fernando Botero, a Colombian artist and sculptor, who has a unique and one of a kind style of art. His works can be found in the Museum of Modern Art in New York (MOMA). They had the students re-create his work with any type of creative art form they choose. They then set up the class as an art gallery. The students introduced their piece of art along with three interesting facts on Botero in Spanish, and they spoke in Spanish for 20 minutes about the art or anything else going on in their lives. Prom was the upcoming weekend so you can imagine that it was a popular topic. This was a hands-on activity that promoted higher level skills. They couldn’t use a script during the 20 minutes. In the end, the students were successful and they felt amazing about their experience.

Band Notes Spring has FINALLY sprung and the PND Band has wrapped up yet another productive and busy school year! On Saturday, March 8th, the following students participated in the IHSA Solo & Ensemble Contest held at Normal Community West: Laurel Cramer, Cristian Davidovich, Jamie Donahue, Roderick Evangelista, Leanne Ford, Rebecca Kerns, Joey McNally, Michael Miles, Max Rutschke, Teresa Schneider, Christine Seitz, and Joseph Sposato. We debuted our completed marching uniforms at the Peoria St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 17th. Thursday, May 15th, was our spring concert in the Livingston Auditorium. Many thanks for your attendance and support! On Tuesday, May 20th, we performed at the Arts in Education Spring Celebration at the courthouse. We performed for the events of Graduation weekend: Senior Honors Assembly, Baccalaureate Mass, and Commencement. the PND Marching Irish at halftime! V I S I T U S AT W W W . Genetics Isn’t What It Used To Be Years past when Mr. Bill Beckman started teaching biology traditional genetics experiments required growing stocks

Compare teaching then to 21st Century at PND using 1:1 laptops, and computer simulations, based on real genes engaged a pilot program called Geniverse via the Concord Consortium, funded by the National Science Foundation. “Geniverse is free, web-based software for high school Biology that engages students in exploring heredity and genetics by breeding and studying virtual dragons. Interactive models, powered by real genes, enable students experimentation.” The outcome of the work done here by PND Biology students during this school year showed an increase in learning as they progressed from Training level to Apprentice, Journeyman and ultimately Master.
