From the Vicarage….

Dear Friends, What makes a good king or queen? During assembly time in school, this past half term, we have been thinking about kings and queens. Beginning right back with the very first king of Israel we traced the royal line through to Jesus the Servant King and King of Kings, encountering along the way some very good kings and some who weren’t. We’ve discovered how kings and queens first came into being and what made (or makes) them successful. It has been a fascinating albeit whistle-stop ‘tour’ which will aptly conclude with a celebration of the Diamond Jubilee of Her Majesty the Queen. In school we have concluded that what makes a king or queen a ‘good’ king or queen has a lot (everything) to do with knowing whose servant he/she is and in seeking above all to govern in tune with God’s vision for his world. It is a challenging responsibility. I encourage you to make every opportunity to take part in the Jubilee Celebrations in our parish, or further afield, and to give thanks for the good, long and fruitful reign of Elizabeth our Queen who, with love and devotion, has served those entrusted to her care. There is a lot going on – and something for all ages. See you on Sunday 3rd June I hope. Angela Whittaker

A Children’s Prayer for the Diamond Jubilee (from the Church of England Website): Great God, whose Son Jesus looks after us, we thank you for our wonderful Queen. At this special time of Jubilee, please give her love, joy and peace as she does what you ask her to do and looks after us her people; through Jesus Christ who loves us all. Amen.

The Jubilee Just a reminder that there will be a Jubilee event on Sunday 3rd June. The morning will begin with a special service at 11 o’clock in St. Mark’s Church. Following this at around 12.30pm a picnic, which is part of the Na onal Big Picnic, will be held on the Village Green.

Those

who do not wish to be part of the service may join us at this point. We hope you will bring some food which can be shared present. shared

During the picnic

the

Kendal Concert Band will play to entertain us. The occasion is one for all the family. Everyone is invited to dress for the occasion and to take part, par cularly the children, in a fancy dress compe

on. You are invited to dress regally or as a character from the

last sixty years. This will be followed by some novelty sports events for the fit and healthy, the young at heart, and the children. The event will culminate with Dave, a professional entertainer, leading 4

us in a sing-song of some popular songs from the last sixty years. We are hoping for a super fine day but should the weather be inclement then we will do as much as possible in the Village Hall which, in any case, will be open for cloakroom use. We hope you and your family will join in this celebra on.

You are invited to a teas.

At Gill Jackson’s home (3 The Stables, High Park, Oxenholme), on Saturday 7th July from 3pm. If you are interested please put your name on the list at back of church. As there is a limited amount of car parking space please try and share liIs. Thank you.

Say thank you to Her Majesty for 60 years of service The Big Thank You project is giving people an opportunity to add personal well wishes to Her Majesty the Queen to the special thank you letters that are being displayed in many cathedrals and churches around the country. Containing an introductory paragraph by diocesan bishops, the letters give the public a chance to say a few words in appreciation of 60 years of loyal service. Once compiled into one Big Thank You letter later in the year, the letters will be delivered to Buckingham Palace. Please add your signature and message to the pages in church – no later than Sunday 17th June please. Thank you 5

Good News for Christian Aid. On 30th June 2011 the Department for International Development (DFID) launched a fund called UK Aid Match. This fund will match, pound for pound, public donations to appeals made by not-forprofit organisations for development activities focused on poverty reduction in developing countries. Christian Aid applied to this fund and was successful in receiving matched funding for a proportion of the Christian Aid Week 2012 income. The first £5 million donated to Christian Aid Week 2012 will be matched by the Government pound for pound, so more people will be helped to work their way out of poverty. The donations which will be matched are those which come in and are processed first. In previous years the £5 million mark has been reached by the first week of July. Gift Aid will still provide a valuable addition to the collection even though the government will not be doubling it. The £5 million will be used to support the work of our partners around the world as they help some the world’s poorest communities to find their own solutions to poverty. The seven country programmes that will receive the additional funding are in Burma, DRC, Ghana, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Sudan and Zambia. Soliciting funds from the British Government in no way influences Christian Aid’s ability to speak out if and when we disagree with the policies and actions of this government. So, many thanks to all those who contributed in the house-to-house collection this year. The overall result will be posted on the church notice board and in Oxenholme Post Office shortly. Elspeth Jayne.

That’s a fashion nightmare! “He’s gonna be wearing black and blue next.” “Looks like somebody added a little too much starch to the laundry! “You should have seen the sheep that coat came from” “Pretty soon the one that got away will be as big as Jonah’s whale!” “If he doesn’t stop saying, ‘Look, I’m a rainbow!’ I swear I’ll find a hole and drop him in it.” “I hate to admit it, but the vertical stripes DO make him look thinner!” “Now do you believe that Dad’s colour blind?” 9

Spring Cleaning at St. Mark’s We’ve never helped with the Church “Spring Clean” before because we have always been away when it happened, but this me- we were around. So we went to St. Mark’s on the Sunday aIernoon of the “Spring Clean” armed with some rubber gloves, a couple of dusters and some disinfectant wipes …… and we could not believe our eyes; this is some SPRING CLEAN!! It all starts with the raIers; very, very long poles with soI brushes on the end frighten the spiders and get rid of their magnificent dusty webs. Down just a bit, using long ladders, the windows and window sills are cleaned and dusted. Vacuum cleaners, polish and dusters, clear and clean the pews; you would be surprised by the number of swee e papers and biscuit crumbs that emerge from under the pews! The wooden flooring is smartened up with varnish; nothing is missed. Cupboards are sorted and died, even the spider poo is tackled! (We didn’t realise that was what those white dots at the base of the pillars and pews were. Did you?) The Church looks so much brighter and smells clean too! This is a terrific job well done. It is hard work, but done with such good will and humour, ( with short breaks for tea and home made biscuits) a testament to the Love and Faith of those who help each year. Thank you all. From:

We wanted a cleaner to suck up the dust, We had a nice Hoover but then it had bust, We went to the shop to look at a DYSON, The man said “I’ve lots more, so why don’t you try some?” He showed us a SEBO. It’s from Scandinavia, He said “you’ll be pleased with it’s unique behaviour”, And so we decided and we were enthralled, But we s ll do the “Hoovering”, Co’s that’s what it’s called. CONFIRMATION It’s the me of year again when we ask if anyone would like to be confirmed this year. What is Confirma.on? Confirma on is an important stepping stone in the journey of life. It’s a bit like an echo too - an echo of some promises made at our bap sm if we’ve already been bap sed or christened. For a lot of people bap sm happens to us when we are too young to say ‘Yes’ to following God for ourselves, and so parents and godparents make promises on our behalf. Confirma on is a moment when we can decide and say for ourselves, ‘I want to follow God and I’m ready to make that promise.’ For other people bap sm and confirma on might be closer together, and even on the same day. How old do I have to be to be confirmed? Anyone wishing to be confirmed in the parishes of Crosscrake, Old Huon, New Huon & Natland should be at least secondary school age. However please note that no one is ever too old to be confirmed. What do I have to do to get ready for Confirma.on? Just let one of the clergy from the Helm Group know that you are interested in being confirmed. Will I be the only one being confirmed? Definitely not! A few people have already asked about confirma on for this year. What if I’m not so sure whether I would like to be confirmed? Come along anyway and have fun discovering more about confirma on, and what it means to want to follow God. If, at the end of the course, you decide not to be confirmed that’s fine. When will the Confirma.on sessions take place? For the young people the sessions will start on Sunday 16th September and run un l the end of November (term me only) from 5.30pm - 6.30pm. The adult sessions will take place at a mutually convenient me. When will the Confirma.on Service take place and where? The Confirma on Service will take place on the morning of Sunday 2nd December 2012 at Holy Trinity Church Kendal. So please if you’re thinking about being confirmed, or want to find out more, let one of the clergy know. Thank you. Angela 11

PUSH PUSH has been busy con nuing to raise money for ‘Send A Cow’ – and we are extremely grateful to all who have helped us. A dona on of almost £400 from Crosscrake Church’s Lent Lunches has really boosted our fundraising efforts – and we should by now be much closer to purchasing a farm never mind a cow! Thank you. We have also taken part in a sponsored swim to raise money towards Marie Curie Cancer Care. Thank you to all swimmers, length counters, spectators and sponsors. No final total for this as yet but we’ll let you know.

During June and July we will be quite busy with Jubilee Celebra ons, running the tombola at Natland Fete, a weekend away at Rydal Hall and our annual BBQ.
