Supreme Court Defines Sexual Abuse of a Minor On May 30, 2017, the Supreme Court issued a unanimous decision holding that statutes criminalizing sexual intercourse based solely on the ages of the participants describe generic ‘‘sexual abuse of a minor’’ only if the victim is required to be younger than sixteen. The petitioner in the case was convicted under a California statute criminalizing consensual intercourse with a minor under eighteen by any person at least three years older. The decision, written by Justice Clarence Thomas, is summarized below on page 763. The case name is Esquivel-Quintana v. Sessions. It is available at 2017 U.S. LEXIS 3551.
Stanford Law Releases Pro Se Asylum Guide On May 24, 2017, the Stanford Law School Immigrants’ Rights Clinic released an interactive guide that provides step-by-step instructions for pro se respondents seeking asylum before the San Francisco Immigration Court. The guide was created and written by law students under the supervision of professors Jayashri Srikantiah and Lisa Weissman-Ward. English and Spanish versions of the guide are available at https://law.stanford.edu/2017/05/24/immigrants-rightsclinic-students-create-unique-guide-for-pro-se-asylumseekers/.
