16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Summer time is like New Year’s Day. We make resolutions about things we will do, places we will go, books we will read and chores we will finally get done. And almost as quickly as we make them, summer has flown by and we’ve accomplished few of our lofty goals. One goal that can still be met is the one about spiritual renewal. This is the perfect time to do something as a family to understand more fully and practice more deeply the values, goals and habits of faith. Without some attention and work, faith can languish. A special project, a class, weekday Mass or family prayers can do a lot to revive and renew your faith. Like the small seed planted in the spring that now is full grown and bearing fruit, faith requires nourishment and care. We can always call upon the gifts of the Holy Spirit to help us in times of growth and change. Paul tells the Romans that the Spirit helps us in our weakness, even praying for us when we do not know how to pray. God’s love is so pervasive that nothing stands between Him and us. Nourish your faith now so that in your time of need, you will receive the fruits of the Holy Spirit.

July 23 ~ Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time “The Spirit comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but the Spirit intercedes with inexpressible groaning.” These words from St. Paul give us great consolation, especially when we feel distracted or unable to pray. As we take time this week for prayer, let us rely on the Spirit of God to give us the words we need even when we feel inadequate or preoccupied. Trust that God knows the desires of our heart.
