FLYING DENTISTS ASSOCIATION

FDA Fall Board Meeting Sept. 29-Oct.1, 2016 It’s not too soon to book your reservation for the fall board meeting. The fall foliage is gorgeous; the weather is cool and the “leafers” are booking their rooms. Remember, all members are encouraged to attend the board meeting.

We are staying at the historic Fitgers Inn on the lakefront of Superior. Fitgers has four restaurants, two nightclubs and shopping all on site. http://fitgers.com/ hotel.php. Fly yourself or airline into KDLH, home of Cirrus aircraft, our official airport. Arrivals on Friday, September 30th. Duluth is Outside Magazine's "Best Town Ever" With 6,834 acres of city parkland, 178 miles of wooded trails, 16 designated trout streams, plus Lake Superior, there's not much you can't do when you are outside in Duluth. Spend a day on the water with a harbor cruise, charter fishing, sailing, or kayaking - be it on the big lake, the bay or the St. Louis River. Experience nature while hiking trails, exploring parks or strolling the lakewalk. Rent a car or fly low level over the lake up the north shore. Take a fall colors tour on a historic train up the North Shore or into the St. Louis River wilderness. There are also maritime and railroad museums and the Lake Superior aquarium. With so much to see and do, you should come early and/or stay late. http://www.visitduluth.com.

PR E SI D E N T’ S L E TTE R It is an honor to serve as president of an organization that means so much to me and my family. The Flying Dentists Association has changed our lives and the members we count among our closest friends. No other organization combines a love of flying and dentistry. No other organization has taught me more about dentistry and aviation. No other organization offers more opportunities for travel, adventure, education, camaraderie, and family fun.

perspective is both enlightening and entertaining. The closing cocktail party and banquet featured delicious BBQ followed by comments from our meeting chairs, Ray and Kathy Rhoades, Bart Bycroft, and myself. Lad Brooks was the recipient of a Lightspeed headset for his recurrent aviation training. There were awards of dubious distinction, photo ops, a chance to say good bye to our friends and the always emotional singing of God Bless America.

The Cody meeting was an example of what the Flying Dentists has to offer. Thursday we enjoyed the camaraderie at the airport as we met the arrivals, greeting old and new friends. Friday evening’s welcome reception offered a chance to catch up and make plans for the meeting. Saturday morning’s breakfast informed us about the natural beauty and wild life in the area.

Educational opportunities included tax strategies presented by Mr. Maine Shafer, guided implant placement using Cone Beam and digital files

Family fun included a barbecue and toe tapping country rock concert followed by the Cody Rodeo, hanging out by the pool with friends and their kids, touring Yellowstone National Park and the Cody Museum and the white water rafting trip. The Cody kid’s programs allowed parents to attend the meetings and continuing education programs while the kids enjoyed their time. A very special treat was the honor of being addressed by retired Wyoming Senator Al Simpson whose bipartisan

presented by Dr. Justin Moody and mountain flying ground school. Textron was at the airport displaying some of their new aircraft and they also sponsored our closing cocktail party. Of course there is the business of the FDA, the two board meetings, the member’s luncheon and the mission presentation by Kevin D’Angelo. Remember, all members are encouraged to attend the board meetings. In the next “Presidents Letter” I’ll discuss the decisions made at the board meetings regarding the future of our association. It was great to see all the kids in Cody! There were many 2nd generation FDA members in attendance, and many of our younger members are stepping up to important positions. Bill D’Angelo is our national convention chair next year, Amy Hahn is heading our new social media marketing campaign and Ned Markey is our new president elect. All this bodes well for the future of the FDA. It was great to get a taste of the Cody lifestyle and hospitality. The meeting was a flurry and a fabulous success. Thank you Ray and Kathy Rhoades! And thank you Bart and Kate Bycroft for your tenure as president of this great association. It was a great year!

FLYING National Convention Re-cap Wonderful people to thank! We want to thank all in our FDA family who helped make our Cody experience so memorable. We had 174 registered, including 20 FDA Kids returning with their families. Many of them had not returned to a FDA Annual Meeting since they were kids….and now they brought their kids. Stacy, our Executive Director, is competent, prepared, just plain efficient, and we thank her for helping with all the unseen details that make our events run smoothly. Indeed a true professional. Remember that she is a travel agent and can help us with any of our travel needs. Great working with this fine lady! It began on Thursday when we realized last month that over half of you would arrive a day early. Kathy and her sister, Susie Smith, who lives in Cody and was immensely helpful in planning this meeting, immediately went to work and got us a reservation at the famous Irma hotel, home of the 6PM Gun Fight in the street every night in the summer. After the gun fight, over 50 FDA’ers adjourned to their Prime Rib buffet/ salad bar and our private room. Greeting at the airport continued

pictures, and food from our headquarters in the FBO. Gary Stewart managed to get a RV8 and RV10 for us to goggle over and David Camp again took pictures of everyone everywhere. Gary gave our hotel banquet director a ride in his RV8 that she will never forget. And this was all before the meeting really started with our 6PM cocktail reception/buffet.

Sunday was left unscheduled so everyone could enjoy Yellowstone. The geysers, bubbling mud, and wildlife did not disappoint as many saw the buffalo herds of 4-5000 in the NE end of the park. Elk, black bear, mule deer, otter and antelope also spotted.

Both of the CE programs arranged by Steve Combs were excellent. Maine Schaeffer of the Bradford Tax Institute could hardly get away due to the overwhelming response to his presentation and Justin Moody’s course Monday morning on Dental Implants kept the audience glued to their seats until the very end; lots of questions afterword. How does one describe our session with Retired US Senator Alan Simpson? A national treasure, he kept us laughing and learning about our nation and its politics. His unique perspective on our nation’s finances, debt, and other issues were shared with plenty of humor and one liners.

Friday with Bill and Claire Holmes leading and President Bart and crew receiving the 37 FDA airplanes, greeting them with their rental cars at plane side. Stacy, Kathy and Claire ably managed the registration,

Rericha, Kevin Carnes, and Barb Van Antwerp. The afternoon was spent at the Cody Recreation Center, swimming and riding the multilevel tube slide. Monday morning the kids left early for a campfire breakfast and trick horse demonstration before the float trip. That night during the Banquet they had their Pizza Party across the hall, complete with arts and crafts and a karaoke machine. The kids had a great time!

Saturday Morning speaker, Senator Alan Simpson

While the Dentists were at CE, Kathy, Amy Hahn and the Children’s committee kept the kids running. Saturday morning 27 kids rode horses on a trail ride. Among the chaperones on horseback and the other kid activities were parents Jonathan and Tiffany Rhoades, Beau Hahn, Alice Manny Cruz & Zach Powell with Textron Aviation

FLYING Convention Re-cap (Con’t from p. ) Did we mention the float trip? Lynn Keener kicked this one out of the park. Over 90 FDA’ers floated the Shoshone river Monday afternoon. Warm air, cold water, and lots of fun for our group aged 3-83. On the return trip from the take out we dropped the ladies off at the Holiday Inn to begin getting ready for our final banquet.

The final banquet was highlighted with the remarks of Past President Bart passing the gavel to incoming President Steve Schell. Steve eloquently introduced Angelyn Craddock who thanked the group for the donations in memory of her husband Dave, and showed a picture of the memorial bench in place at the Kewanee airport. As is custom for the FDA, our banquet ended with God Bless America, ably led by Cal Calcote. Cal has only missed one Annual Meeting in over 50 years. If your FDA experience has consisted solely of the weekend Fly Ins in your region, consider attending next year’s Annual Meeting. It is truly a family affair with lots of kid activities and functions for our spouses as well. Come to Lake Placid! It has been a pleasure to serve as the Convention Chairman/

Chairwoman this year and we now hand the reins over to Bill D’Angelo for next year’s trip to Lake Placid, NY, home of the 1980 Olympics. We met with Bill, Kevin D’Angelo and Stacy last week at Cody and the wheels are already rolling for 2017. We say good bye to Cody and look East with anticipation…can’t wait to ride down the Olympic Bob Sled track. Thank you again for all the help with this year’s event. Ray and Kathy Rhoades

FLYING FDA Regional News Central District

Western District

Hello friends! What a fantastic time we just had in Cody, Wyoming! Thank you so much to my lovely parents, Ray and Kathy Rhoades, for their incredible dedication and hard work toward making that such a momentous occasion! Bravo! Thank you Stacy for your excellent skills and assistance! Way to go, all! The Central District has a few fly-ins to check out and plan for: The Canada Fishing Trip in July 22-25 still has a few spots left if you’re interested, and is just an experience of a lifetime that you must not miss out on. If you have not been, put it on your bucket list! The Smoky Hill Bomb Range fly-in first weekend in August promises to meet all your boyhood dream checklists with fervor, so don’t miss it! Have a great July! Amy Hahn 913-406-1290

ST E U Q RE We will be looking for our next fly-in adventure to be planned in late spring – if you have any great destinations in mind, let us know!

Just returned from the national meeting in Cody the other day and as usual it was a great meeting. (Thanks Ray and Kathy) Dinner and a street gunfight show on Thursday. Friday had a board meeting and a welcome reception. Saturday’s full schedule had breakfast, a tax institute CE, an informative and comical talk by Senator Alan Simpson, the members lunch, and then a mountain flying course and Beechcraft and Cessna demos at the airport. Sunday was a free day which Claire and I spent touring Yellowstone Park. Monday saw an early AM board meeting, Implant CE with Dr. Justin Moody, and then a float trip on the Shoshone River before the final evening reception and banquet. All in all a full schedule. Choice aviation was great and the ground crews were awesome at getting airplanes parked efficiently with rental cars waiting in most cases before the prop had quit turning. The Western District had 7 members in attendance and another member who could not make it because of weather at his home base. (Always better to be safe than sorry) I hope all those who attended had as enjoyable time as we did. It was great to catch up with old friends and meet new ones. Next on my ‘FDA’ schedule is the Canada Fishing Trip where I hope to spend some quality time with one of my daughters and maybe catch a few fish. I hope everyone has a good and safe rest of the summer. Until next time, blue skies or centered approach needles. Bill Holmes
