President’s Bits and Bytes Hi Everybody, Wow, what an interesting meeting we had for our June presentation. We had major technical problems that delayed the start of the presentation for almost 45 minutes. Thankfully all the membership pulled together and all ended up very well. We had to borrow a member’s laptop and move to the boardroom and further improvise, so we certainly weren’t bored. The presenter, calling on Skype Video from Los Angeles, was very understanding, for which we were exceedingly grateful. Her presentation, after all of our efforts, was ultimately a great success. Kathy Jacobs spoke all about Blogs. It was a terrific introduction to the subject. And also, it was very thorough. Blogging is not a subject I knew much about, and by hand raising, it appeared that few others in the audience did either. I now feel I have a decent understanding and am now able to use some of that info for my personal purposes. You can link to Kathy’s website here: http://vitaminch.com/blogs/about/ . The link to the presentation she gave to us is here: http://vitaminch.com/blogs/2012/02/01/azacc-tour-timeagain/. On that page you will see a PowerPoint Web App presentation which you can click on to see all of her slides. It will not be the exactly the same, because she will not be narrating about each slide, but you should benefit to some degree if you were not there at the meeting. I want to share with you a most interesting software security solution I recently found. But first I want to remind you that anything you find mentioned here is for information purposes only. Use these ideas at your own risk. This idea fits that caution especially well. Not that I personally feel there is any danger to your system, but because it is so unique. What I am talking about is something called Browser in the Box. You can read a PC World report on it here: http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/227838/ free_browser_in_a_box_runs_firefox_4_with_ultra_security.html. The article was written May 13, 2011. Since then updates now support Firefox 11, rather than Firefox 4 mentioned in the article. What’s interesting is that the German government commissioned this project, and it is currently available to businesses for a fee. My take is that this is an advanced powerful high quality professional internet security solution. That is saying a lot, but you make your own decision. The source companies’ press release is here: http://www.sirrix.com/content/news/59997.htm. The product data sheet is here: http://www.sirrix.com/ content/pages/59798.htm. The product page is here: http://www.sirrix.com/content/pages/BitBox_en.htm. If you choose to try it, download "B ROW SER IN THE B OX " C LIENT - P ERSONAL E DIT ION . Also download anything else that might help you, like the user manual and installation instructions. Read the FAQ’s. The download is nearly 400 Mb so be prepared for the time needed to download it, based on your Internet bandwidth. It is large because it includes a virtual machine with a Debian Linux Operating System and Firefox browser all in one download. The idea is that you browse the web using a browser that is different (and more secure) operating system (Linux) separate from Windows, and that no virus or malware can escape. You thus browse the web safely. When you close the browser, it erases everything that happened in that session and starts brand new the next time you use it. No virus or malware survives. It is set up so that your bookmarks and browser settings do survive. I have used this browser in a box on and off for several months on a Vista system, and so far it has been flawless. Hope you find this interesting and/or worthwhile. Till next time, Jerry Miller President VVCC

Membership Corner by Myrelle McHale Hello All, Here we are, half way thru the year 2012! Remember when we were still feeling so cool about knowing what Y2K meant? As I was sitting here trying to find something to write about I started looking through all the notes and handy hints we receive from our friend Richard Gohman. So then I decided to start a project: make hard copies of his Tips & Tricks and put them in a notebook with an Index Page. That makes it a lot easier to look for rather than going back into my vast collection of “saved” e-mails. No matter how many I try to delete, I still have over 5000 on my machine. You too, eh? Anyway, I became aware of two things almost immediately: 1) Richard has provided us with a myriad of helpful suggestions and 2) It is now costing me a fortune in ink to print these copies. I have decided the best thing to do would be make an EMAIL folder, name it Richard Gohman, and save the files onto my computer. That way if I want to share them later on they are there for sending. Do any of you have any projects you do on your computer you would like to talk about? I know a long time ago, I used to make up patterns on Excel for crocheting afghans. Is that a sign of a sick mind or of someone who needs to get a life? Please, don’t answer that. I discovered some HOW TO sites and wondered how many of you have ever seen or used them? http://www.wikihow.com/Main-Page http://www.ehow.com/ http://www.howstuffworks.com/ http://www.howtogeek.com/ OH, and this one just for the wonder of it … http://www.nasa.gov/ They might be something fun for you to discover some hot summer day How do you plan to spend your time on the computer this summer? Drop me a note and tell me what you like to do – it may be the discovery that I was waiting for! Bye for now. Stay cool this summer. It has already been a scorcher the past few days..... Enjoy traveling around the world/universe on your computer (with your A/C on.....). Myrelle

I got a DELL with Windows 7 laptop to replace my old HP with LINUX. The HP was wireless and wasn't working so I couldn't get on the internet. On the DELL with Windows 7, 64 bit, I downloaded Virtualbox online. And with the help from DELL support, downloaded Debian LINUX online with remote assistance. All is working fine. I will take my DELL to our next Linux Project meeting. Miles Standish said he would help me get Krusader and other Linux programs we use in our Linux Project installed.
Thank you Jack Doan. *********************************************************************************************************************************************************
IE 10 is planning to come with “no tracking” turned on by default. IE 9 has the option for “no tracking” but you have to turn it on. IE 8 does not have the “no tracking’ option. “No tracking” is supposed to keep web sites from tracking where you go on the Internet and what you look at to enhance their advertising. However their compliance is not mandatory. But there is a simple way to prevent the computer from storing any “cookies” or even any “history” of where you surfed and it is good in all versions of IE. Just type the following line into your web address bar: About:InPrivate (Note the “colon” between about and InPrivate) (The above text is not case sensitive. You can use all lower case letters.) Press ENTER and you will now have a Private Session of IE and a basic web page of that identify. Using any of your Favorites or type in any web address and you can surf totally privately until you close Internet Explorer. Note: you will have the header “InPrivate” at the start of the address bar to tell you when you are in this mode. Once you close Internet Explorer (IE) you automatically go back to the STANDARD mode the next time you use IE. If you want IE to open to private surfing every time you use it, change your home page to about:inprivate.
Thank you Richard Gohman.

My Lenovo computer has a touchpad that, apparently, cannot be turned off by the computer's software. The problem is that when my hand hovers near the touchpad, it is so sensitive that it jumps the cursor around the page, making typing very difficult. Lenovo did not answer three requests for help and very talented local gurus did not see the solution, so I went to the "Smart Computing Magazine" Help Desk. Fortunately they had had a similar request and the answer was to go to Toshiba computers software for the same brand of touchpad. Importing a bit of software from that file solved the problem. So the answer to a software problem may be to go to another manufacturer and seek the answer.
Thank you ???. ************************************************************************************************************** I have added a small program to each of my browsers on two computers. This program places a small symbol on the screen which tells you who is tracking you and that they have been blocked. After doing some browsing there can be a significant list of blocked trafcking programs. This program is free. Program: Do Not Track Plus can be found at www.cnet.com or www.abine.com

will be monthly features for the
benefit of our valued Members. It is your suggestions that enhances the newsletter which in turn may bring in new members. The more members, the more fun, more knowledge, more ideas. Bring a non-member to the General Meeting or to a Special Interest Group (SIG) meeting. Let them see what we are all about. The Pot Luck Lunch would be a good opportunity to start.

June 01 Donation Sedona Hilton Resort & Spa donated 32 flat screen monitors and 20 keyboard/mice for the Club’s refurbishing effort. Miles Standish picked these up and needed to drive slowly home to avoid damaging the monitors. Should anyone have power and/or data cables they would care to donate it would be very much appreciated. Our Club has partnered with the Old Town Mission here in Cottonwood to refurbish computers and equipment that is donated to the Mission. Our refurbishment department will fully inspect, repair, or recycle the hardware, including reformatting/wiping the hard drives, re-installing the original operating system, and will insure that all personal data is destroyed/removed in the process. For our efforts the Club will receive every other refurbished computer to use at our discretion. We will then place them with a needy individual/family, or we can offer them for a donation to those that can afford to do so with the proceeds going to the refurbishing department for purchasing needed replacement parts. In addition, our cub continues to accept computers/equipment donated directly to the Club to be refurbished and placed as described above. If you do donate a computer, don’t forget to backup your personal data in case it is needed later for a new/different computer. Personal data is music, pictures, documents, data files, or any other important data. If you obtain a new/different computer or have an old computer stored away and it is no longer of use, and you would like to donate it - you can contact: David Hart (928) 301-7905 or email

How to change the Text Size on a web page (Zoom) with a mouse If you have a mouse with a scroll wheel, you can try this trick. You can use your scroll wheel to increase or decrease the zoom in many programs. It is easy. You can try it in Microsoft Word and on some web pages if you are using Internet Explorer. Step 1: Hold down the CRTL key Step 2: Move the scroll wheel up or down to zoom In or Out. Note: Depending on owners design of the webpage, you may not always be able to change the zoom.
