JROTC over the Summer By Cadet John Timmins Although the School year has just started, many things have happened within the corps. This past July we had a very successful Summer Cadet Leadership Course (CLC) that was led by Cadet Lt Col Cole Mooty. The Cadets thought that the camp was very meaningful and had very high compliments for it. We also had the Summer CLC Awards Banquet to recognize all the cadets that had completed the adventure as well as a few other cadets for their outstanding effort. Some of the awards earned were the Outstanding Male and Female Cadets, (Kevin Fast and Morgan Bolin), Outstanding New Cadet (Javiret Vicente), Most Improved Cadet (Lee Forbes), Rising Star (Thomas Bolin), Esprit de Corps (Joshua Robles, Shade’ Gopie), and Great Attitude (Samuel Meaders, Alexia Jennings). The school year started off with our homecoming festivities where we presented the giant flag on the field and our saber team provided the saber arch for our homecoming royalty. We helped out at the Beach Lake Trails cross country jamboree. The job of the cadets was to guard the trails to keep the younger kids safe and pointed in the right direction while they ran. One cadet responded that he enjoyed the little kid’s smiles. The Raider Decathlon was held on Sep 24th at Camp Carroll. We placed 3rd in the Run, Dodge, and Jump portion of the Decathlon but more importantly, our cadets had a great time! On Sep 30th, our cadets will have the opportunity to visit different organizations on JBER such as EOD, the 212th Rescue Squadron, Firefighters, Munitions Squadron, Dog Handlers, and also eat a MRE on a C-17. They also will go to the YS on JBER for an all-night lock in. As we move into the winter months, drill season begins. The first practice is on Monday Oct 3rd at 6:00 in the morning and will continue until February 25th. We will be practicing unarmed drill, armed drill, color guard, and exhibition drill. We hope to have many cadets come out for practice!
