Jr. High Academic Credit System Implementation for the 2017-2018 School Year
Basic standards over the course of three years: Beginning with the incoming 6th grade class in 2017-18: At least 10 core credits (1 year = 1 credit) earned over three years (6th/7th/8th) to advance to 9th grade In a nutshell: Passing grades in at least two of the three years offered in each core subject (math, English, science, social studies) in grades 6 - 8 Summer school options for failing grades (required if failed more than 1 year/core)
Basic requirements over three years (Grades 6 - 8): Math - 2 credits minimum (6th/7th/8th grade math) English - 2 credits minimum (6th/7th/8th grade English) Science - 2 credits minimum (6th/7th/8th grade science) Social Studies - 2 credits minimum (6th/7th/8th grade social studies) At least one foreign language credit (7th/8th grade French/Spanish) At least one Health/PE credit (6th grade) 10 core credits minimum required of the 15 core credits available
Math/Foreign Language - Must be sequential: 6th grade math - must pass to move on to 7th grade math 7th grade math - must pass to move on to 8th grade math *Must have at least two math credits to move to 9th grade
French/Spanish I - must pass to move on to French/Spanish II *Must have at least one foreign language credit to move to 9th grade
English/Science/Social Studies: English - students will progress through 6th, 7th, 8th grade English but must pass at least two credits to move to 9th grade Science - students will progress through 6th, 7th, 8th grade Science but must pass at least two credits to move to 9th grade Social Studies - students will progress through 6th, 7th, 8th grade Social Studies but must pass at least two credits to move to 9th grade
Remediation: Students not passing a core class would be given the opportunity to remediate that course during summer school (starting the summer of 2018) If summer school requirements are not met the student would be scheduled to remediate only the core classes with failing grades the next fall. For example - If a student did not earn credit in math as a 6th grader and did not take advantage of summer school, but passed all other classes s/he would be scheduled for all 7th grade classes EXCEPT for math, which would be 6th grade math.
Sample schedule of a 7th grade student remediating mathematics during the school year: 1st period - English Language Arts 7 2nd period - Social Studies 7 3rd period - Spanish 1 4th period - Mathematics 6 5th period - Science 7 6th period - Physical Education
Implementation for current JH students: Beginning in the fall of 2017: 7th graders must earn at least one credit in each core class (English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language) in 7th/8th grade to advance to 9th grade in 2019-2020. 8th graders must earn at least three core credits (English, math, science, social studies, and foreign language) in 8th grade in 2017-18 to advance to 9th grade in 2018-19.
Other considerations: Attendance Policy - Credit may be lost after the 10th absence/semester. Determination would be made based on documentation provided for excused absences and grades. Time could be made up to restore credit in study hall after school. Grades of corresponding classes for students moving in would be recognized for credit & scheduling purposes Summer school format and funding Test out/project options on case by case basis
