EAST Goes West – Western Expansion Pioneer Day 3rd Grade Vestavia Hills Elementary East What would it be like to have been born in the United States between the years 1803 – 1890? Our class is going to travel back in time when our country was expanding westward. Your task will be to invent your own fictional character that has decided to make the journey westward. You will bring your character to life using facts from your own research. Part of your project will be to decide which trail you will be traveling: The Oregon Trail, the Natchez Trace, the Santa Fe Trail, or the California Trail. Everything you do on this project will be from the viewpoint of the fictional character you have chosen. You will write about your life as that character. You will create a journal documenting your life during the western expansion. You will present (in costume) yourself and your journal to our class the week of Pioneer Day. Below is a suggested list of characters that you can choose as your fictional character, or you can create your own. fur trader wagon captain woman / mother farmer merchant doctor

shop keeper minister man / father miner cowboy missionary

Pony Express rider/trailblazer pioneer child frontiersman (woodsman/trapper) wheelwright school master/teacher railroad worker

You may use books, web sites, or any type of resources to gather information about Western Expansion and your character. During your research, keep these questions in mind. Why are you going westward? Which trail will you choose to travel? What are some of your experiences on the trail? What is your life like after you arrive? Once your information is gathered you will start your journal. You may type the project on the computer, or write it neatly by hand.
