The Organization: El Pueblo’s mission is for Latinos to achieve positive social change through building consciousness, capacity, and community action.
Job Purpose: The purpose of this job is to coordinate, implement, and evaluate the “Derechos sin Fronteras (Our Rights Have No Borders)” program, which works with Latina/o youth in the Triangle area. The program focuses on youth leadership development, peer education, youth-led community action, and intergenerational partnerships around reproductive and sexual justice issues. The program is designed from a human rights perspective and prepares youth to become advocates in the movement for reproductive justice.
Responsibilities: Primary Responsibilities Recruit youth to participate in the program. Prepare for and co-facilitate weekly training sessions with a group of 10-15 peer educators using existing DsF curricula. Coordinate overnight retreats with peer educators and youth advocates. Build capacity of Latino/a youth to lead community actions, including outreach workshops and other advocacy efforts. Coordinate parent/family engagement in the program. Build and nurture relationships with community partners. Evaluate and identify areas of improvement for the program. Gather and regularly report process data. Participate in required Teen Pregnancy Prevention Initiative meetings and events. Collaborative Responsibilities Support intergenerational activities with other El Pueblo staff to ensure their alignment with overall youth programming and El Pueblo’s mission. Oversee program budget spending and prepare monthly financial reports. Speak publicly on behalf of El Pueblo, Inc. and beyond specific program. Position updated 2/2014 Page 1 of 2
Provide technical assistance to other organizations working on similar programs. Support organizational development and fundraising efforts.
Qualifications for the position:
Bachelor’s Degree in Public Health, Youth Development, Social Work or Public Administration preferred or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Minimum of 2 year’s experience coordinating leadership development and/or community training programs, ideally with Latino/a youth. Experience with and interest in developing Latina and Latino youth advocates on sexual and reproductive justice issues. Program Coordinator must feel comfortable discussing and talking about sexuality with youth, beyond abstinence. Topics in the curriculum include pregnancy prevention, sexual diversity, and pregnancy options such as adoption, carrying the baby to term, and abortion. Demonstrated commitment to social justice and passion for cross-sector organizing (especially between the movements for immigrant and reproductive justice). Excellent oral communication skills, with an ability to interact with diverse groups of stakeholders, including youth, parents, and coalition partners. Experience managing grants and accurately completing reports in a timely manner preferred. Computer skills in a Microsoft Office environment, including MS Word, Excel, Publisher, as well as social media.
