The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is dedicated to protecting native fish and wildlife, and providing sustainable fishing, hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities for millions of residents and visitors. Working throughout the state, WDFW’s employees–field biologists, enforcement officers, land stewards, lab technicians, customer service representatives and others—manage hundreds of fish and wildlife species, maintain nearly a million acres of public wildlife lands, provide opportunities for recreational and commercial fishing, wildlife viewing and hunting, protect and restore habitat and enforce laws that protect fish and wildlife resources. Find out more about us and the important work we are a part of at www.wdfw.wa.gov   This position supports the mission of WDFW by providing technical and scientific duties of both anadromous and inland fish rearing and transport at the Wallace River Hatchery, Sunset Falls and other fish cultural facilities within the Cascade Complex.   This is a permanent full-time Fish Hatchery Specialist 1 In-training position in the Fish Program, Hatchery Division. The duty station is the Sunset Falls located at 14418 383rd Ave SE, Sultan WA 98294. Anticipated start date is February 20, 2015.   DUTIES: Fish Culture Tasks include: Feed fish their calculated daily ration Monitor fish behavior and health Monitor egg and fish production Administer therapeutics, calculations and administer drugs as prescribed Identify, sort, and sample species for spawning and adult distribution Clean ponds and raceways, troughs and incubator systems to maintain fish health

Identify marked adults and collects tags/marks for bio sampling as directed and records data Collect fish tissue and fluid samples for virology Perform fish inventories, splits, marking trailer inventories, weight samples and plants Fish Handling, sampling, and data collection at Sunset Falls Tasks include: Responsible for the overall safe handling and hauling fish trapped at the facility Participates in handling, sorting and enumeration of adult fish Assists with biological sampling and data recording/entry Assists with the reporting of escapement using Fish books Operate the 2.5 ton/1100 gallon tank truck used to haul adult salmonids above Sunset Falls Tasks include: Incumbent shall use and maintain a CDL with tanker endorsement Responsible for the operation and maintenance of the on board pump/ aeration systems that are essential for hauling fish Responsible for general maintenance and repair of the tank truck including the air systems, brakes, engine and drive train Maintenance and facility upkeep at Sunset Falls and the Wallace River Hatchery Tasks include: Organizes and maintains WDFW tools, equipment and grounds Communicates safety concerns in a timely and accurate manner Uses tools and equipment properly safely Keep intake screens and fish ways operable and clear of debris Perform required general maintenance on standby generators Operation and minor maintenance of the bridge crane Operate and maintain the alarm systems Operate, maintain and adjust the water intake structures to ensure the fishways are functioning correctly as the river level changes Pubic Contact and Communications Tasks include: Respond to questions from visitors at the Wallace River Hatchery Conduct organized toursInteracts with public in a polite, professional manner Identifies the best way to respond when faced with a difficult to answer question   Working Conditions  Typical work schedule is 8-5 Monday-Friday, depending on the time of year; includes weekends and holidays as needed. Working outside in adverse weather conditions and performing strenuous physical activities. Driving a fish planting truck is 50% of the duties.   This position also requires you to work alone and with others in remote locations.   This position is off-station and standby has been not assigned.   The preferred candidate will have a CDL or the ability to obtain license within 6 months. Controlled substances pre-employment testing is a part of WDFW's employment process and that a satisfactory test result (negative on controlled substances) is a condition of employment. Note: All applicants considering applying for this position should understand and consider that standby is a requirement for all positions in the Fish Hatchery Specialist series. Management may determine it is necessary to assign it in order to accomplish the goals and objectives of the agency and as necessary to protect the resources of the agency and if assigned, it will be a requirement of the position. This means that, as a condition of employment you must either join the union and pay union dues, or pay the union a representational or other fee within 30 days of the date you are put into pay status.    QUALIFICATIONS: An Associate’s degree in fisheries technology or closely allied field and one year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery, OR three years of education towards a Bachelor’s degree in fisheries or closely allied field and one year of experience performing fish culture in a hatchery, OR successful completion of a fish culture program from a vocational school and one year of experience performing fish culture duties in a hatchery. Three years of experience performing a variety of fish culture duties in a hatchery will substitute for the required education.   Knowledge and Abilities Desired: 1. Basic fish culture techniques; rearing procedures 2. Basic adult and juvenile salmonid identification at various stages of lifecycle 3. Water dynamics (e.g. flows, flow patterns, temperature, etc.) 4. Basic mathematics; ability to calculate and understand quantities and proportions 5. Knowledge and proficiency in the use of Windows 2000, word and Excel 6. Safe and proper use and maintenance of tools and equipment 7. Knowledge of heavy truck air systems, braking systems, engines and drive trains 8. Basic understanding of carpentry, electrical and plumbing 9.
