Happy New Year! We hope you had a wonderful break. This is the traditional time of year for setting goals. We use habit 2 and Begin with the End in Mind! Goals give our lives direction. They help us figure out where we are going and how we will get there. At Southview, we set goals each year. We have school-wide goals to continue to increase levels of student achievement, and to further strengthen our school community. Our teachers also set individual goals based on student progress and their own professional development. I encourage you to think about or revisit a goal you have that will support your child’s education. Would you like to set aside time each evening for your child to read? Visit the public library once per month? Develop a plan to support your child as he/she practices math facts? Assist your child in developing a new hobby? Goals created to support the hopes and dreams we have for our children are inherently inspiring. Our goals guide us through each day and each school year, but also serve as a road map to the future. Each week as I spend time in classrooms at Southview, I am filled with inspiration and hope. Our teachers and staff are continually striving to deliver the best possible instruction, and students are happily engaged in their learning. Conferences are scheduled for February 8th and 9th. Information about scheduling will come home later this month. I strongly encourage you to attend conferences, as this is an important time to learn about your child’s progress, ask questions, and set goals for continued growth.

Dressing for the Weather Southview office hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. If you need to contact the school nurse, Gina Singer, please call 952-4318794.

Please Send a Note for Transportation Exceptions: To help avoid confusion and to help provide a safe commute from school, parents are asked to send a note or call the school if their child is to go home from school in any other way than their normal means of transportation. Also, written notification must be provided if a student is to go to a location other than the identified end of the day location.

Brrrr… January certainly brings us cold temperatures. That’s why it is so important for students to come dressed for the weather. Our students look forward to a break from inside activities each day by going out for recess. In addition to the break for students, research has also shown that fresh air and outdoor activity improve classroom work time. As long as the temperature and wind chill are zero and above, students will go outside for 25 minutes. While we know the benefits of children going outside, we are also concerned about their safety. Please make sure to send your child to school dressed for the cold weather: winter jacket, hats, mittens, snow pants, and boots. In addition, please stress that they are to wear the clothing while outside at recess as some students insist on not wearing them. Please be sure that your child has a hat, mittens, a warm coat, boots, and snow pants. Please make sure those items are labeled with your child’s name. If your child is in need of warm clothing, contact our social worker, Stacy Swenson, for assistance.

Parent-Teacher Conferences Wednesday, February 8 4:00-8:00 p.m. Thursday, February 9 12:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Remember to Schedule your February Parent-Teacher Conferences Online! Sign up for conferences will be done online. Please go to our school website at http:// www.district196.org/sv and click the link called “Winter Conferences” and proceed with the directions from there. If you do not have access to a computer or have questions about scheduling, please call our office at 952-431-8370 and we will be happy to assist you. The website sign ups will open on January 23 at 10:00 a.m.

Absence Reminder: If your child is going to be tardy or absent from school, please leave a message to notify us of his/her absence. The number to call is 952-431-8375. When leaving your message, please give the following information:   

Name of student Name of your child’s teacher Reason for absence or tardy

Kindergarten Registration Coming Soon Kindergarten registration for the 2017-2018 kindergarten students will take place during parent/teacher conferences in February in the Southview office. Registration will be on February 8 from 8:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on February 9 from 12:30 to 8:00 p.m. in the main office. Parents are asked to bring with them their child’s birth certificate or passport, proof of Early Childhood Preschool Screening, current immunization information and any daycare information if daycare is needed. It is not necessary for the child to attend. If you have questions about kindergarten, you may contact the Southview Office at 952-431-8370.

Student Transfer Options and Deadlines Students living outside the district may apply to enroll in District 196 schools through the state’s Enrollment Options Program. Nonresident student applications are preferred by January 15 to be considered for enrollment for the 201718 school year. Applications for enrollment under the Enrollment Options Program are available online at www.district196.org, by calling Student Information at 651-423-7640 or at the Southview Elementary office. Elementary school students may request a transfer from one District 196 elementary school to another based on the following situations: 

Daycare—if the student will be receiving daycare in the attendance area of another school;



Intent to change residency—if the student’s parent or guardian intends to move to a new residence within the school year and designates a mailing address for their new residence;



Parent/guardian request—based on space availability in the requested school.
