Full Australia Day Program inside

Did you know Murrurundi is the only Upper Hunter town to have a parade as part of Australia Day celebrations? It’s a great tradition and over the years there have been some wonderful and wacky entries from glammed goats and gophers to classic cars and pimped up ponies (remember the pirate ship?)

All meetings are held at Council’s Administration Centre, Scone unless otherwise stated.

Whatever Australia Day means to you, it’s a great chance to get creative with the kids and put on a show that stops traffic on the New England Highway.

Garden Club News In the midst of a summer heatwave, the Garden Club was pleased to be able to use the leafy surrounds of Haydon Hall for our Christmas lunch. We provided the salads, sweets, plum pudding & cold meats & we were refreshed with lovely punch. Some thirsty gardeners even imbibed in something stronger! We will be in recess until February when our meeting will be at Janene Nolan’s Cnr. George St & Henry St. Murrurundi.

The flower will be a dahlia; if they survive the heat. Here’s hoping the good Lord will set the elements in such a way that rain in abundance will come to refresh our gardens & land & fill the rivers & creeks. We are certainly due for it! Have a very Happy New Year and may the coming 2018 be all you could wish for.

Murrurundi Rotary News First things first, welcome to 2018, we hope you all enjoyed Christmas and New Year. Members of Rotary have been looking over the past year and we feel very pleased with what we have achieved in 2017, but sadly the time has come for Murrurundi Rotary Club to close, there are several reasons for this and the most obvious is that we are all getting older and with that comes the need for support from other members of the community. We had the opening of the Native Gardens set up at the railway station. We would like to thank the 5 upstanding community folk that attended plus the members of council, 4 in all and the rest of us were rotary members. The crowd of 17 enjoyed a sausage sizzle and the XPT passengers gave us a shout and a wave that was nice.

This garden belongs to the village not Rotary and we would love the village to take full ownership of it. Let’s make it a place to be proud of, remembering the station is part of Murrurundi's heritage the railway played a big part in the founding of this town. Our joy would be that like Paradise Park, the Swinging Bridge and the beautiful valley it could become part of a tourist trail that showcases Murrurundi. So it is with a very sad heart that this is my last entry into the links. Rotary in Murrurundi has been running for over 60 years and I would like to thank all those that went before this committee, for the work that has been done in the community. Cheers from all the Members of Murrurundi Rotary Cheers from the Secretary’s desk, Robin

Watering Cans on Sunday Evening Only Level 5 water restrictions are in place for Murrurundi until further notice. Residents and businesses are asked to do all they can to conserve water. The restrictions include: · No watering of lawns · Watering gardens: Bucket or watering can be used between 6pm and 8pm on Sunday only. · No water to be used for pools, water features, washing exterior surfaces or cars.

Water usage is still too high for the available water supply. Level 5 water restrictions aim to reduce use of town water by 70 per cent which means trying to use no more than 180 litres per person per day. More information on water restrictions can be seen on the Council’s website www.upperhunter.nsw.gov.au within the Drought Management Emergency Response Plan 2014 or contact Council on 6540 1100.

THE LINKS . . . COMMUNITY NEWS . . . THE LINKS . By the time you receive the Links next year all the good things will be only a memory. You will probably get it about the second week in January so as from the 9th there are 356 days until Christmas comes again, there aren't you really pleased I shared that with you? A big thank you to Dinah & Larry for putting up the Christmas lights at the Cottage, I didn’t have to do a thing not even supervise. The Cottage looks great at night & Carm has her Christmas Tree on the verandah, I didn’t have anything to do with that either, it all looks good. Col Stanford from Rotary has done a wonderful job at the railway station, he has made 2 magnificent native flower beds at the northern end of the platform & every pot on the platform & out the front has a plant in it. There is also a stone in one of the gardens which came from the Heritage building at Cressfield, this historic piece of stone commemorates the opening of the native garden by Michael Johnsen MP (Member of the Upper Hunter) & Scone represented by our Mayor Wayne Bedggood. Carm & I were invited by Col & Robin to attend the gathering & also stay for a sausage sizzle, we dressed up in our “old clothes.” I don’t know how women wore all those clothes in those days, no way would they have been comfortable, too hot. Have to go now, next year, best year, take care of each other, God bless. Gwen A O.B.E. “Thistledome” Murrurundi Heights

Pioneer Cottage “Tomorrow is the first day of the rest of your life” “Just a “Smile Awhile” ok so here’s that thought” joke you have all been waiting for… The Pilot & the Priest: A priest dies & is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a guy who’s dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket & jeans. Saint Peter addressed this cool guy, ‘Who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven?’ The guy replies, ‘I’m Jack, retired air pilot from Houston.’ Saint Peter consults his list. He smiles & says to the pilot, ‘Take this silken robe & golden staff & enter the Kingdom. The pilot goes into Heaven with his robe & staff. Next it’s the priest’s turn. He stands erect & booms out, ‘I am Father Bob, pastor of St Mary’s for the last 43 years. “ Saint Peter consults his list. He says to the priest, ‘Take this cotton robe & wooden staff & enter the Kingdom.’ ‘Just a minute,’ says the good father. ‘That man was a pilot & he gets a silken robe & golden staff & I only get cotton & wood. How can this be? ‘Up here-we go by results, ‘says St Peter. ‘When you preached people slept. When he flew, people prayed.’

Hope it was worth the wait.

Murrurundi SES News

Now that’s a Christmas party

Our Unit Controller, Bob Standen, joined with other State Emergency Service Local and Unit Controllers on a weekend tour of the new State Emergency Service Headquarters Facilities in Wollongong followed by a tour of the Bureau Of Meteorology in Sydney. Last Wednesday the unit conducted physical fitness tests for our volunteers in accordance with the SES requirements. This was followed by the presentation of a certificate to Stephanie Mostyn for her five years’ service with the SES. Stephanie’s association with the SES started with the SES School Cadets at Scone High School before joining the Murrurundi Unit. Several members of our unit will be away on holidays during this holiday period so our training schedule will be cancelled until the first Wednesday in February. A roster has been organised so that we will have a crew ready to respond should there be an emergency during this period. We are now in the middle of the storm season so the SES recommends everyone to do what they can to lessen the risk of damage to their property. Small things such as cleaning guttering and securing loose objects in the yard can prevent injury and damage during storms.

December 21 was our final meeting for the year and our unit Christmas party. Towards the end of the party we received a call to a large tree that was blocking traffic flow in both directions on Timor Road. We responded a team out to the tree meeting Police on site. The team on site worked to remove the tree from the road way to allow the safe flow of traffic. (From the NSW SES Murrurundi Unit Facebook page) The SES hopes that everyone has enjoyed the Christmas and New Year break and looks forward to a prosperous year ahead. The SES is volunteers assisting their community during emergencies. Ian MacAlpine, Publicity Officer For emergency assistance during floods or storms call the SES on 132 500. The Murrurundi controller, Bob Standen, can be contacted on 6546 6569. General enquiries to the Murrurundi SES Unit are directed to 6546 6912.

Good nutrition is always important, especially as we get older. Good nutrition will help older people maintain weight, muscle strength, bone strength and independence. Murrurundi Meals on Wheels has an information brochure about eating well for older people and their carers. Brochures on Eating Well are available at Murrurundi Library.
