PR E SI D E N T’ S L E TTE R HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!! Oh what a year 2015 has been. I’m sure that 2016 will see similar FDA Family adventures and Continuing Education experiences. As for a New Year’s Resolution….I am NOT one of those individuals that commits to this yearly charade but if I was to put it in to motion I would say….”Hey Lets FLY MORE and see those wonderful people called the Flying Dentists”. No Pressure I can fulfill that resolution. Colorado Skiing…Nashville, Country Music capital of the World…Cody, Wyoming, Home of Buffalo Bill Cody…Canada Fishing and Relaxing….Finishing up my tenure as FDA President. On to bigger and better things…FDA Past President…FDA Secretary…Normal FDA Fella!!! Yep in a short three years I will be back to the normal FDA position….GRUNT. Happy go lucky Mooney pilot that loves to see all of his FDA Friends. If you are like me, you can recall your very first Flying Dentists Fly-in. Mine a trip to Custer State Park in the great state of South Dakota. Flying through rain shafts landing in a cross wind with my youngest sleeping in the back seat to wake up when the engine shut down.

Kate, your first lady, a world class trooper sicker than a dog for 24 hours and not knowing a sole. Everyone got wonderful goody bags, that were handed out at the airport, to come to find out that the Bycroft bags were conspicuously missing the dramamine samples. Needless to say the FDA family stood up to the plate and Kate had plenty of dramamine for the return trip to Kansas. Yes, it was clear blue skies and smooth as silk all the way home. What a wonderful start to the years full of family fun and excitement FDA Style!!! Now you sit back and think about your first FDA trip. I bet you have a story to tell as well. This would be a great addition to the next newsletter!!! Get your pens out and send in a draft to Stacy. I hope you spent the December Holidays, revert back to the last newsletter for definition, and partied like a rock star. Drank all the Egg Nog you could get your hands on and wonder what you were going to do with the “Lump of Coal” Santa left you!!! Let’s get this New Year off to a great FDA start!!! See you soon. Happy New Year from the Bycroft Family to Yours!!! Keep the Oily Side Down and Gear Extended to Land. Bart and Kate Bycroft

FLYING FDA Giving Back

ack B g ivin G A FD

Tis the season to be jolly or possibly tis the season to consider how fortunate we all are. As I have said time again we have so many ways to donate our skills and time to help those around us that are needy. As pilots we can fly to many areas that are inaccessible to others. We have the skills to share our aviation experience with others, and use our planes to transport others and ourselves to locations for treatment or to give treatment. As dentists, we can immediately make a difference in the lives of people around the world with very little outside help. It is really amazing how much we get back when we give of ourselves. Every time I work with with a charity project I realize how lucky I am and enjoy my life even more because of it. We are so fortunate to be able to share that with our children and family so that they benefit from that growth as well. It certainly is not a leap to conclude that my two children became motivated to become professionals as adults due to their involvement in most of Beth and my

charitable activities when they were young children. There certainly were other more fun activities they could have chosen to do, but number one in their schedule was to come with us to the Dominican Republic and Appalachia for our clinics. My goal was always to have fun while helping the poor which made those grueling hot days working a clinic in a small hot building bearable and amazingly enjoyable. Over the years I have brought many high school and college students along on our missions and invariably we hear from the parents that it changed their lives.

have my older brother along on the Dominican mission the week after the sail. (Joe and his wife Mary are flying down with us in the 210 for both events) . Hope to see many of you in the BVI’s. Dr Kevin D’Angelo [email protected] 716-913-4036

So my recommendation for the young families of the FDA is this: involve your kids with your charities wherever it might take you and watch them mature and grow from the experience. And remember to try and make it fun for their sake and your own. We don't need to torture ourselves when helping others. Talking about fun , many thanks go to Steve Schell for organizing the upcoming BVI sail/dive week in March and scheduling it so that we can fly the week after for our Dominican Republic mission. Steve and Alex, and Pat and Tom Kingston will join us in DR for the week long mission. And this will be the first time that I will

F L Y I N G SAF E Safety Article Long Awaited 3rd Class Medical Bill Imminent Don’t sell that plane: Consider Buying one!!!

You may be aware of what just happened in Congress December 15th but if not, read on. The Pilots Bill of Rights 2 passed the Senate….it was UNANIMOUS! This has been a long and hard fought battle with AOPA, EAA, and some key Senators and House of Representatives and it is about to happen. All that is needed is the House to follow suit and then have Obama sign. The House had more support than the Senate and Obama already endorsed the Bill of Rights version 1 so it would be hard to imagine he and they not doing likewise. Congress comes back in session Jan. 5th. After this happens, the FAA has 1 year to get all the paperwork changed or it goes into law anyway. Consequences: the value of used aircraft would go up, new advances in aviation would occur, gas prices might come down, FBO’s might become more profitable, it goes on and on due to 100s of thousands of more pilots being able to fly. Bottom line: If the House does this fairly soon after session starts,

by next January at the latest, the most helpful news to GA since the invention of the wing should be upon us. The facts are as follows: Aircraft to 6000#s 6 people IFR 250 kts 18,000 this essentially is all of us, well 99.9% of us. There were a few compromises along the way to get this swung but it still is really really really good.

The link is at the bottom of this article. This isn’t perfect but it will be extremely helpful to our nations pilots and should revitalize GA. We feel will directly impact the FDA. Stay tuned and get excited. There are many terrific trips coming up in the future that you just can’t miss. FDA Safety Team

Most pilots that have had a 3rd class medical within 10 years would never have to get another Medical. Pilots that develop a small list of medical problems would need to get a special issuance once and then be good to go. This would be some cardiac, neurological, or mental conditions. If it has been longer than 10 years or if you have never had a Medical you need to have a 3rd class Medical once, then you would never have to get another Medical. Once these conditions are met, a pilot needs to see a Physician once every 4 years and fill out a form and give it to the Physician and then make a copy and keep in their logbook. Every two years a pilot must complete an online course on aeromedical factors.
