Happy 2015! We hope your winter break was full of family and fun. The office staff enjoyed the break and an opportunity to recharge our batteries. The second half of the school year is full of activities and goes quickly so we are gearing up. The beginning of the semester is January 12th and a time when vendor choices can be changed. If you would like to switch vendors, please let your teachers know and complete the appropriate request paperwork. The NDA Board of Directors will have an open seat in late March. If you are interested in being involved in our school’s success, serving as a board member a is a great way to get involved. Board
terms are for 2 years and meetings occur one afternoon per month. If you are interested and would like to hear more, please call Laura at 640-1041. Thanks to everyone who returned their technology devices. We are cleaning things up and reinstalling programs so we can return them after the semester begins. If you would like to check out an iPad or laptop for your student, be sure to ask your teacher for the paperwork to make the request. Requests will be prioritized and devices will be headed back to families January 15th on the bookmobile. Looking ahead to state testing in the spring, please talk to your teachers about

School Board Member Wanted! The NDA Board of Directors has one opening. The NDA Board meets once a month at the Alturas Office. Meetings usually last 3 hours and are scheduled to match member availability. Serving on the board is a wonderful way to make a contribution to our school and
to your children’s education. Board members can be parents of students or community members. It is helpful if someone has experience being on a board and experience with education. Our next meeting is February 16th at 1:30 PM. If you are interested in this opportuni-
ty, we invite you to attend the meeting so you can see what board membership is all about. If you have questions please contact Laura at:
[email protected] or call her at 233-3861. We look forward to hearing from you!

Cascade’s Cirque Mechanics Field Trip We would like to invite our families to join us for a special school showing of “Cirque Mechanics” at the Cascade Theatre in Redding, CA on: WEDNESDAY March 18th 9:00 AM (Show starts at 9:30 AM, must arrive 30 minutes early) About the Show:
“Ageless stories spun in mid-air.”
Newsletter Contest: Be the first person to email me three facts about Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as the name of one of his most famous speeches to win a prize! Send answers to
[email protected]
Cirque Mechanics, although inspired by modern circus, finds its roots in the mechanical and its heart in the stories
of American ingenuity. The shows, rooted in realism, display a raw quality, rarely found in modern circus, that makes their message timeless and relevant. The stories are wrapped in circus acrobatics, mechanical wonders and a bit of clowning around. This is an amazing show that you won't want to miss!
If you’d like to attend this field trip, please email Kelly at
[email protected] to sign up. We take sign ups on a first come, first serve basis, These school performances usually fill up within a couple days, so please don’t wait long to sign up. Once the sign-ups are full, we will put families on a waiting list in case of cancellations.
Due to the fact that spots are very limited, this field trip is open to NDA students and one chaperone per family only (no extra tickets for siblings or extra adults).
Please note: each family must determine age suitability for themselves, so check out Cascade Theatre’s website for more information.

Counselor Corner with Bob Eaton PSATFor those who took the PSAT this October past, students will get their access codes emailed to them via the College Board. The access code will allow students to use MyCollegeQuickStart for test results and study guides, career opportunities and to help aid in the student's college search. MyCollegeQuickStart is a valuable tool to assist student's and parents not only with studying for the SAT, but also with career and educational planning. I strongly advise that those students who took this test
use this valuable resource in their educational planning. 9th-11th GradersCollege Options offers a Summer Scholarship Program that assists 9-11 graders in Modoc, Shasta, Siskiyou, Tehama and Trinity Counties to attend pre-college summer programs on college campuses throughout the United States. College Options will provide scholarship funding for program costs that include tuition/ fees, housing,/meals, books/supplies. They do not cover transportation costs or deposits. They will award
$2500 or the cost of the summer program, whichever is less. Study abroad is not an option. And finally, current high school seniors are not eligible for this scholarship. The deadline for this scholarship is 5:00 pm on Thursday, March 20, 2015. For more details on this opportunity, contact Buffy Tanner at
[email protected] or 245-1842. The application is available online at www.collegeoptions.org (click on "Scholarships").

CASH FOR COLLEGE WORKSHOPS Cash for College WorkshopsCash for College Workshops are held in January and February each year to help parents and students with filing their Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA is due March 2 for seniors planning on attending a post secondary institution in the Fall of 2015. However, with that said, it is imperative to file your student's FAFSA as soon as possible and not to wait for the deadline of March 2! Please do not wait for your taxes to be done before filing your FAFSA. It is completely okay to guesstimate on the FAFSA where needed when it is filed before this date. Corrections on income and other matters can be done when the student receives the Student Aid Report. Please do not hesitate to get your FAFSA done on time. And some people that think they may not qualify for aid, may qualify, but unless this is done, no aid will be forthcoming. And the FAFSA is also needed for some scholarships, so it is truly important for many reasons for parents and students to file as soon as possible. Below are listed the Cash for College Workshops and after this list a checklist of what you need to bring to help complete this document. Please note the date, time and school that is most convenient for you.
