WILLIAMSBURG, VIRGINIA June 27-30, 2014 FDA NATIONAL CONVENTION John and Gertrude Shell, our 2014 convention chairmen, have chosen a wonderful sight for the national conventionWilliamsburg, VA. As with most of our conventions the time frame allotted does not allow one to take in all the area has to offer, sooo ”Go early, stay late” in Williamsburg! Williamsburg has so much to do and see! The roots of our great country began there! Your first stop should be the

visitors center or even better BEFORE you go, get online to see what will be happening that week (June 27- 30). There are 18th century plays, a visit with the music teacher in the music house, maybe a “ball” at the Palace or a “trial” in the Capitol. A Patriot’s Pass, purchased at the visitor’s center will get you into everything except the “specials”. It is good for one (1) year. There are other “packages” available, John and Gertrude have us staying at the top of the line Williamsburg Lodge! You’ll love it. Actual convention schedule will follow next month. While online you can also make dinner reservations at any of the Historic Taverns-which is a “must do” one night- The taverns fill up fast for dinner so make those reservations early. Back to the beginning----I mentioned the visitor’s center. One of the first “must dos” is to see the free film “The Patriot” (not to be confused with the one with Mel Gibson). This brief film will set the scene for what happened in Williamsburg and how the history of our country got its start. You will recognize some of the actors from their younger years! It would be impossible for me to put all there is to do and see in Williamsburg, so check out their website! www.colonialwilliamsburg.com You will so enjoy stepping back into the 18th century but with all of our modern conveniences. John and I honeymooned in Williamsburg and we have gone back again and again! I hope everyone will enjoy this “magical” place as much as we have through the years! If we can answer any questions about our convention location, please call us: (Con’t on page 3) JOHN & KATHY VELTMAN 410-310-8987 • PHone 727-391-1750 • cell 727-479-5235

P RES ID EN T’ S LETTER
2013 has just ended and a recap of this past year is in order . . . here are some of highlights.
Annual ski meeting in Snowmass o Skiing with FDA friends o Morning CE in robes •
Annual dive trip to Grand Cayman o Swimming with dolphins o Swimming with stingrays
•
Skylodge Ranch in Sedona, Arizona o Sorry Paul, I couldn’t make the meeting. What a beautiful place and I love landing at the airport (kind of like a carrier landing in the desert)
•
National Convention in Steamboat Springs, Colorado o Flying in the mountains, cool temperatures, mountain biking, sporting clays
•
Fishing trip to Eagle Nest Resort in Manitoba, Canada o Thanks to Ray Rhoads and Bob Prough for carrying my family members in their planes, the Kitchens family was able to attend o Cheryl caught a 42” pike
•
Board meeting at the Hangar Hotel in Fredericksburg, Texas o Awesome location, taxied right up to the hotel
These meetings were all held at fantastic locations, but what really makes them special is the wonderful CE and being with our FDA family. Hey! It’s a new year and “Cheryl, since I’m president we need to attend these meetings this year”. o Ski trip, dive trip, annual meeting, Oshkosh (sorry Steve, we can’t make this one we will be on a Scandinavian cruise), Eastern meeting out to Bay Bridge Maryland, San Juan yachting adventure (Western District), board meeting at Rough River, Kentucky, and don’t forget Hawaii in January 2015 What a neat schedule of meetings! On a personal level, I am proud to announce the birth of two new granddaughters – Sophia Lowe Kitchens born 11-20-2013 to the proud parents of Jason and Jamie Kitchens and Elizabeth Ann Kitchens born 12-18-2013 to the proud parents of Brandon and Caroline Kitchens. Also, in November I received my Formation Flying Inc. Wingman card. Give me a hug, handshakes are for sissies! Andy

FLYING OSHKOSH By Gosh It’s the dead of winter in Iowa so very enjoyable to pull a “Walter Mitty” and daydream about the ultimate aviation overload experience in the known Universe. As you have read in previous Newsletters, the FDA is indeed going to participate in a big way come July. Participation from our group looks to be off the charts with over 50 pilots/ planes giving me the verbal “I’m In!” that I always look for. You guys are simply amazing It is still early for all the specific details but here is what we have to date. We will be meeting at Wausau, Wisconsin, home of Jan Bublik, Ned Markey, and Tom Turner Saturday July 26th for a pre party party. There is plenty of room at Wausau airport (KAUW) and the FBO is extending us the warmest of welcomes. We will camp on the airport/get a room for the night at a local hotel and have a group supper in the land of the Cheese Curds…or is that Cheese
Heads? and do a thorough pre-flight briefing. Sunday early afternoon, at a time to be dictated by the EAA and FAA, we will make the 60 mile trek to OSH
There are too many of us to be housed together thus, the two destinations. We can’t get reservations till February so relax about that. We will have specifics on housing in the next Newsletter. We will tell you about the specific arrival procedures when the EAA/ FAA tell us what they want of us, much more to follow on that topic. We will stay at least through Wednesday and for those wanting to partake of arguably the best event at Oshkosh, the Wednesday night aerial show, a Thursday departure is just what the Doctor ordered.
and park in an FDA group on the airport camping grounds that the EAA has prepared for us. Some of us want to camp under the wing in traditional OSH style and the rest of us will be busing to a Christian School turned into a dormitory or the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh and stay in some real dorms there.
Please check out the link below for a snippet of Oshkosh at http://www.eaavideo.org/video.aspx? v=2680136529001 See you there. Steve

FLYING San Juan Yachting Adventure September 19-26, 2014 Night 1 – Friday, September 19th – Sailing School and Pre-Board – Bellingham, WA Night 2 – Saturday, September 20th - Arrive Spencer Spit State Park, Lopez Island On Saturday, September 20th, the flotilla will be departing Bellingham Harbor destined for Spencer Spit State Park on Lopez Island. The 138 acre marine park features two sand spits that joined to form a briny marsh lagoon. It is a common migratory stop for waterfowl including Bonaparte’s Gulls, Great Blue Herons and Kingfishers (and sea kayakers!). It’s a great first stop in the Islands to begin the R&R portion of the trip. There are no docks to crash into so it will be easy practice for our boathandling skills. We will likely be tied to the State Parks individual mooring balls (or rafted together or on the hook). We will have just showered the night before so we will look forward to a refreshing shower in Friday Harbor on Sunday. Beach-combing, clamming, fishing, hiking and relaxing are other activities to be enjoyed at Spencer Spit. We will only have about a ½ day at the park due to the morning commute, but the various types of rocks and interesting driftwood will keep you entertained if the birds, hikes, or books don’t! Weather permitting, we will try to do an evening CE campfire on the beach! Nothing like a dinghy ride back to the boats at night! In some spots the bioluminescent glow of the algae can be seen in the bow wave and prop-wash. Very cool. Currently, there are 16 confirmed people and three boats booked. ) There are four other possible boats! Book YOUR boat now!
