January 2011

January 3, 2010 Deer Canyon Creek Families, As the month of January gets started Canyon Creek School is charging ahead with academics on the mind. Students are reaching the midway point of the school year which means we will be assessing their individual growth. Many students will be receiving some annual testing during the week of January 17th through the 28th. This testing allows us to understand how the students are academically growing through the year in areas such as Reading, Math and Language. During the testing week we could use some help from home. If parents could see to it that your child is well rested and eating a healthy breakfast, it would be greatly appreciated. This helps the school in obtaining an accurate score from your child so that we can better serve them in the classroom. In the last month we have had some very cold weather. Please remind your child to wear appropriate clothing to school. The lack of appropriate clothing in severe cold temperatures can be very dangerous. We are especially struggling with our 6-8 grade students coming to school in shorts or without a coat. Starting this month I will be asking students to wear appropriate attire in the winter weather. This will be enforced based on common sense, and not choice. The district is responsible for your child’s well being while under our supervision, and proper dress is part of this well being. If your child is not appropriately dressed you will be notified by the district. Thank you for understanding our concerns for your children. I look forward to the year 2011 and the success your child will have at Canyon Creek School. Happy New Year! Brent Lipp Superintendent

No two snowflakes are exactly alike, yet they stick together. That is how I think of our CCS families. Different job skills, different homes, different parenting styles; yet we all came together to help each other in this the season of giving. A notice was put out to the community that families needed help and you came together to help a total 7 families; 15 children; 35 gift needs. That is amazing, but not surprising. We have a wonderful community. Thank You, everyone. Merry Christmas, Mrs. Clark

Winter is here—and the children are going outside to play before school and for recess. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather conditions; boots, snow pants, gloves, hat and heavy coat. For the younger students it is also helpful to have a spare pair of socks. Students are welcome to use their PE shoes when they are in the classroom rather then bringing another pair from home each day. Warm children are happy children. Geography Bee Competition—Tuesday, January 11 at noon in the gym. Two students in grades 4—8 will be completing to see who will move on to the next level.

Scoliosis Screening to be held—Tuesday, January 11 for all 6th grade students, new Jr. High students and those 7th & 8th graders who may be on a ―watch‖ list. Students will be screened separately by the school nurse in an area that provides privacy by the school nurse. If you do not want your child screened please sign the opt-out form that was sent home with the children or send a note addressed to the school nurse.

Lunch Application for Free and Reduced Status — are always accepted. If you have a change in employment (less hours/pay, loss of job) or increase in household members you can always apply or reapply. Once accepted, you are approved for the entire school year, regardless of changes.

Check Your Child’s Backpack for Weekly Lunch Balance Notices— they go home on Thursday/Friday each week for students who have an account balance that is a positive $10.00 or less. When a child reaches a negative $20.00 they will be served an alternate lunch until the negative balance is caught up. Parents can also check their children’s lunch balance on-line at http://powerschool.canyoncreek.k12.mt.us/public/ If you have any questions please contact Mrs. Linger at the school.
