Technical Program for 25th IEEE International Symposium on Industrial Electronics (ISIE-2016) Santa Clara Convention Center, Santa Clara, California, USA June 8-10, 2016 Meeting Rooms • FIRST floor: Ballroom to be used for exhibits and two-day IEEE Industry Summit • SECOND floor: o 12 rooms (Room #201 to #212) o 1 theater (607 seats) Regular and Special Sessions IES technical committees (TC) will define the program. Each TC is hereby immediately invited to respond, as described below. Deadline to respond: 15 March 1. Will your TC participate in ISIE-2016? 2. If so, please name at least 2 contacts who will provide oversight. Please give their names, affiliation (country), and email address. For example: • John Hung, Auburn University (USA), [email protected]. 3. Please give a list of tentative regular session titles, and number of sessions for each title. For example: • Adaptive control system (2 sessions) • Nonlinear control applications (1 session) We propose to show tentative session titles in the Call for Papers announcement. This way, we hope to reduce the number of submissions that do not fit the interests of IES technical committees. For each session, please give a list of potential session chairs. Please do not propose a session having no session chair. 4. Special sessions: • Please give a list of possible special sessions designed by your TC. Include names of session chairs, with affiliation (country). For example: • Special session on fractional order control applications chair: Ms. XYZ, Alpha Beta Inc. (Japan) • Is your TC willing to review outside proposals for special sessions? We will gather inputs from all TCs. Overlaps will need to be resolved, e.g. if two TC propose similar session names, then we will asks the TCs to coordinate activities. For example, suppose “induction machine control” is proposed by TC on Electric Machines, and also by TC on Motion Control. Then we might ask the two TC to highlight some key distinctions through the titles. The Call for Paper will be published after inputs from TCs are collected. The ISIE-2016 conference theme: “Industrial Electronics for the Internet of Things.” TCs are encouraged to explore how their activities can be relevant in the emerging Internet of Things (IoT). IEEE Industry Summit Immediately before ISIE-2016 will be a 2-day industry event (on June 6-7) called the IEEE Industry Summit. The theme of the Industry Summit is “Challenges of the IoT.” The Industry Summit will present industry perspectives on technical hurdles facing the IoT. Specifically, speakers from industry will cover the following. • Day 1 (Monday) – Powering the elements of IoT. This includes the generation, harvesting, storage and usage aspects of energy, from batteries to drive computers to charging systems for connected vehicles. Two main sessions will be staged. One focused on the needs for high

power systems, like connected vehicles. The second focus will be on lower power systems like computers, wearables, and other connected control devices like appliances and HVACs. • Day 2 (Tuesday) – Computing and communicating in IoT. Challenges include aligning computing requirements to a particular IoT service or control system, communication across different mediums and assuring suitable security for the actions executed by the IoT connection. Sensor technologies that can be connected and utilized to provide IoT services are also critical to this session. Thus the day will be divided between requirements for computing and communication and sensors. Our industry members in the Santa Clara Valley area, including Silicon Valley, are designing the Industry Summit program. Although IEEE Industry Summit is not an academic research venue, we believe the event will be attractive to ISIE-2016 participants who would like to see industry’s concerns about the IoT. As well we believe Industry Summit attendees will be interested in relevant sessions of ISIE-2016. As such, IES TCs are encouraged to align their proposed technical sessions along the conference theme, wherever practical. ISIE-2016 Session Format To appeal to the very large industry base in the Santa Clara Valley, we are considering changing the format of technical sessions of ISIE-2016. Specifically, we may use a 100% interactive format (formerly known as “poster session”). The audience participant will be able to enter a room and quickly scan all contributions in the session, yet also spend more time with a particular presenter of interest. The 100% interactive format has been successfully used at recent large conference such as IROS-2014 (over 750 papers in robotics arena). Instead of mounting traditional posters, however, we might consider displaying content on electronic display technology. Please send your ideas to Program Chair Luis Gomes no later than 15 March.
