INTRO TO PHOTO CLASSES

January 2015

Teacher: Ms. Carolyn Brown

Email: [email protected] Link on school website: http://www.fivetowns.net/teachers/cbrown/ You need: • A 3-ring binder, or notebook with pockets. You'll have notes, handouts, and homework (sketches etc.) • A pencil and pen • Your ipad and school gmail account • A 35 mm film camera and a digital camera. Ipads can be used in a pinch for digital, but an actual digital camera is better. You can find 35mm film cameras here: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/buy/35mm-Cameras/ci/269/N/4288586274 or on used sites such as ebay. • Cameras only need to be brought to school “as needed.” • We have only half a class worth of desktop computers in room 480, because of school budget restrictions. It is suggested that you have a laptop computer and Adobe Photoshop CS6 software installed. You will have Photoshop assignments required for class. Otherwise, you will be sharing the desktop computer stations in room 480 with one or more other students in class for completion of assignments.

This class consists of in-class demonstrations and lectures, out of class shooting assignments, reading and research about photo techniques and photographers, and in-class hands-on work with film, darkroom printing, and digital techniques. We will follow the artistic process of research, brainstorming, media exploration, final work, critique, and preparing work for exhibition. Course assessments: A. Projects (50%) Long-term projects that involve multiple steps towards completion. B. Exercises (15%) Short term work to learn and practice processes, media, and concepts. C. Research and response (15%) Quizzes, research, writing, and visual journal assignments. D. Class performance and work habits (10%) Participation, effort, respect and responsibility for ones self, each other, the lab and supplies. Students are responsible for making up missed periods. See the school handbook for attendance questions. http://www.fivetowns.net/chrhs/handbook.cfm E. Exam (10%) The Exam activities include a research presentation on a photographer of your choice, and a final exam over material taught in class. Intro syllabus: • Pretest Photo History – Standards: Disciplinary Literacy; Connections Materials and Processes- history of photo from 1800- present Looking at Photos –Standards: Disciplinary Literacy and Aesthetics and Criticism, Connections Composition Elements and Principles of Design Photos as Agents of Change Making Meaning Photo as Document Photo as Narrative Darkroom materials and processes – Standards: Disciplinary Literacy, Creation/Performance/Expression, Creative Problem Solving • Photograms • Pinhole photography CAMERAS: FILM AND DIGITAL: - Standards: Disciplinary Literacy • Parts of the camera- SLR camera controls (film and digital) • Camera controls for creative imaging Digital Processes - Standards: Disciplinary Literacy, Creation/Performance/Expression, Creative Problem Solving • From camera to computer to web: File management • Adobe Photoshop CS6 and ArtStudio -Photoshop Touch for ipad also works, but is not especially recommended as the interface is not user-friendly, and tools are limited. -Files saved in Photoshop Touch can only be exported as jpeg files, not as layers. Therefore, moving between an ipad and a computer does not allow for editing of layers.

• Common image adjustment tools used for “fixing” digital photos: Color adjustments, brightness/contrast, Lens correction filters • Digital imaging: beyond the basics- layering, multiple images, new trends in digital photography • Adding text to images

• Layer styles in Adobe Photoshop • Adjustment layers vs. Image Adjustment menus Selecting and preparing work for display – Standards: Disciplinary Literacy, Aesthetics and Criticism, Guiding Principles • Critique • Presentation: Digital presentation options • Mounting your prints with the dry mount press ART and PHOTO: Standards: Disciplinary Literacy, Creation/Performance/Expression, Creative Problem Solving, Connections • We will do other art projects that relate to photography. These may include: - Graphic design assignments using paper and other media; collage/montage; 3 dimensional work related to photo images, props that will be used in photo shoots; color exercises using traditional arts media; mixed media projects including photo as an element.

Visual and Performing Arts Standards: DISCIPLINARY LITERACY Students show literacy in the discipline through understanding and demonstrating concepts, skills, terminology, and processes. CREATION, PERFORMANCE, EXPRESSION Students create, perform, and express ideas through the art discipline. CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING Students approach artistic problem-solving using multiple solutions and the creative process. AESTHETICS AND CRITICISM Students demonstrate ability to describe, analyze, interpret and evaluate works of art. CONNECTIONS Students understand the relationship among the arts, history and world culture; and they make connections among the arts and to other disciplines, to goal-setting, and to interpersonal interaction.

Intro to Photo syllabus- PART 2

Course expectations: Fall 2014

Teacher Ms. Brown

Attendance: 1. You are expected to attend class. Any missed classes must be made up after school or during a study, if there is studio work that has to be completed at school. (using the darkroom or computers, or other art materials.) Please check with Ms. B to schedule time to do this. If you miss a class, you will earn a “0” unless you make up the time and/or work. If you can complete work without being in room 480, you need to pass in the missing work during the following class period. 2. Any missed classes for any reason count toward your total absences- see the school handbook for attendance rules. 3. Leaving the classroom: You need a signed pass to leave the room for any reason except to get a drink in the hallway (in that case, ask Ms. B.) If you misuse a hall pass- hanging out in the café, etc.- you will have a warning, and/or a detention. 3. NO HORSEPLAY in the classroom, darkroom, or outside in the hall or patio during class time. 4. Class skips or cuts = detention and notification of administration. Participation and effort: 1. You must participate actively during class. This is not a passive class. 2. We will have a short “check in-check out” for each class period to keep track of your progress. What to work on each day? 1. We are working on darkroom, digital, research, and other photo-related art projects. 2. The darkroom holds half the class. The desktop computers accommodate half the class. For this reason, we have to work on multiple projects at one time. 3. Deadlines and information will be posted on the class white boards and our class Google site. Handing in work: 1. Because we have both digital and hands-on projects, you will have a variety of ways to pass in work. Details for passing in work will be included with each project. 2. LATE WORK: much of the work must be done on time so you can proceed with the next part of an assignment. Typically, I will take off 10 points each day (class sessions) for late work. For example, if it is due Tuesday/Red day and you hand it in Thursday/Red day, that is 10 points off. If you have an issue, please talk to me. Digital file formats: 1. All your digital work must be saved with your name, assignment, and class period. Example: John_Smith_composition_Red2 2. We will go over file saving procedures at the start of digital project work. Print images must be 200 dpi minimum. Saving your work: 1. You will be required to keep a portfolio of your work. You can save digital work on icloud or Google; other work can be saved in your class folder. Collaboration vs. copying 1. Much of the work in this class has a collaborative component. You are encouraged to help each other with darkroom and digital procedures. However, on certain work, such as research or reading, I do not want you to copy each other’s work! If I suspect that you have copied someone else’s work, I will make you do it over, or do another project to substitute, or give you zero for that work.

2. Copyright laws must be followed. I read and understand the course expectations: (Students: print & sign your name here)____________________________________ (Parents: print & sign your name here.) ____________________________________ Parent contact information: Email: Phone:
