Mary’s House for Older Adults, Inc.: A LGBT Friendly Residence Internship Program is an opportunity designed for undergraduates and graduate-level students to learn about and contribute to the vision and mission of Mary’s House to create an environment that celebrates the life and experiences of older adults, specifically lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) older adults over 60 years old. Students are expected to apply ethical and professional conduct, oral and written communication, problem solving, the ability to work effectively with others, listen and demonstrate respect toward the input of others and take a leadership role when appropriate. Overview Interns will be assigned substantive projects and tasks providing research, administrative, programmatic and staff assistance to MARY’S HOUSE executive team members, members of the Board of Directors, MARY’S HOUSE staff members and MARY’S HOUSE organizational members, partners and collaborators. Interns are provided the opportunity to learn about careers in public administration, public health and nonprofit organizations, government, academia and other related public service areas. The MARY’S HOUSE internship program will provide interns with dynamic work, learning and networking experiences while exposing participants to the diverse communities along with exposing them to the functions and operations of a Washington, DC nonprofit with local and national reach. MARY’S HOUSE interns can have several backgrounds, including but not limited to: law, business/management, communications, public policy, public health, economics, finance, human resources, planning, social services, public administration, and social media. Students selected to be MARY’S HOUSE interns must meet all the academic requirements of their conferring institutions and present documentation to this affect. MARY’S HOUSE Internship Supervision All MARY’S HOUSE Interns will be supervised by a graduate level MARY’S HOUSE representative with expertise in human services, public administration, public health, public policy/advocacy, government relations, public relations, research, communications (including social media and new media), grassroots organizing, organizational development, capacity building and professional development (Expertise List Incomplete). Further guidance for MARY’S HOUSE Intern supervision will be established through written agreement with the conferring educational institutional.
Intellectual and Academic Property All MARY’S HOUSE directed internship work products and/or byproducts must properly site Mary’s House for Older Adults, Inc. and any other required contract funding entities as the intellectual owner(s) of all written and/or visual materials, including but not limited to publications, photographs, slides and/or video. This policy is inclusive of drafts and final work products. Work products and/or byproducts directed by the conferring institution and/or intern must properly site Mary’s House for Older Adults, Inc. and any other required contract funding entities as institutional collaborators in the development of all written and/or visual materials, including but not limited to publications, photographs, slides and/or video. Any research involving human participants must be compliant with conferring institutions’ research standards and policy’s and must meet the requirements of the appropriate Institutional Review Board(s) (IRB). Additionally, such projects must receive prior written approval of the MARY’S HOUSE Executive Director. Research findings resulting in the publication must be reviewed and approved prior to publication by MARY’S HOUSE Executive Director. Appropriate language attesting to intellectual and academic property rights must be approved by the MARY’S HOUSE in advance.
MARY’S HOUSE Internship Application Applicants must be undergraduates who would have completed their sophomore year by the start of the program and graduate-level students. MARY’S HOUSE Internship program may cooperate with programs under which students earn academic credit or quality for work study (when that work study is fully subsidized

by the college or university). Such agreements must be made in advance with the conferring institution and the MARY’S HOUSE.
Applicants must submit all parts of the application (as detailed below). The MARY’S HOUSE Internship Application is to be completed and submitted to

All materials should be provided to MARY’S HOUSE at once (with the exception of recommendation letters) and all materials must be received no later than a month prior to a desired start date. The email subject should read, [First Name, Last Name] MARY’S HOUSE Internship Program Application. All materials must be sent electronically.
The application packet consists of the following items: A Resume A Letter of Recommendation: Recommendations should be completed by individuals who can speak to an applicant’s academic or work/volunteer experience and should include contact information. Recommendations from a friend or family member are not appropriate. Recommendations can be sent via email and may be sent separately from the rest of the application. A 500 word essay that responds to the following questions: - Why do you want to participate in the MARY’S HOUSE Internship Program? -- What skills or qualities will you bring as a MARY’S HOUSE Intern? - How do you see yourself making a difference in the lives of LGBT Older Adults? Upon receipt of your application materials, you will be contacted to conduct an initial phone screening interview. Selected applicants will then participate in second round interviews with MARY’S HOUSE Board of Directors, MARY’S HOUSE executive team members, staff, member organizations and/or partners/collaborators.
Candidates will be notified in writing if they have been selected to participate in the MARY’S HOUSE Internship Program.
The mission of Mary’s House for Older Adults, Inc.: A LGBT Friendly Residence is to provide safe and affordable LGBT friendly housing to adults over 60. The vision of Mary’s House for Older Adults is to assist in the elimination of overt and subtle discriminatory behaviors, specifically in housing toward people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals as they age and experience the need for a more shared communal living environment.
