Internet Legends Guide & Parent Letter



The Internet Legends Assembly is a fun, interactive session that is designed to teach children a simple code to keep them safer online. There are four lesson plans to run after the assembly to reinforce the code and build into a comprehensive Internet safety programme. ● ●

This Guide offers support for running an Internet Legends Assembly in your school. The Parent Letter is designed to be sent home with each student following the assembly to help reinforce the lesson and keep parents informed. Please contact [email protected] for the assembly presentation and any questions. The Internet Legends Guide Running the Assembly The assembly is interactive and high energy. Please get in touch at [email protected], and we will reply with the assembly presentation for you to use. It’s an easy and engaging way to lead esafety instruction, as the resources are already prepared for you. There are a few things to think about before you run it in your school. ● The assembly takes around 30 minutes. It works as a whole school assembly or for smaller groups. The content is most suitable for Year 2’s and above but you will know best whether it will work with the younger children in your school. ● The assembly has been written for two presenters. You will see in the script that it indicates Presenter 1 and Presenter 2 but it can be run with a single presenter if you want to use it as a classroom activity. ● There are lots of interactive questions in the assembly so you will need to think about how you are going to get the children to vote. You could give them each a red and green card or you could simply ask them to put thumbs up or thumbs down. ● At the end of the assembly you should set the children their first challenge. In the script we suggest asking the children to share one of the tips but perhaps you could think of a challenge that is specific to your school? Maybe you would like them to share a tip with a reception class pupil or perhaps do something creative like draw a poster to share a tip with the wider school community. ● Think about when you are going to run the follow up lessons. These are available to download on g.co/internetlegends. It works best if you run them whilst the assembly is fresh in your pupil’s minds.

Internet Legends Parent Letter Dear Parent, We are really pleased to be taking part in a new eSafety initiative called The Internet Legends Tour. The tour was created by Google and Parent Zone to teach young people four practical tips for having fun and staying safe online. We will be holding a special assembly for pupils and we hope that they will come home and tell you all about it. You can support this activity by asking them what they learnt and getting them to share the Legends Code with you. The Legends’ Code 1. Think before you share Your child learned about how quickly things can be shared online and why it’s important to only share things they’d be happy for everyone to see. 2. Protect your stuff Your child learned what tools are available to keep their stuff safe online – passwords, privacy settings and more – and why they are so important. 3. Check it’s for real Your child learned that not everything you see online is true and heard some tips for spotting online scams. We told your child that if they’re not sure about something, they should always check with you. 4. Respect each other Your child heard about how important it is to treat other people the way they want to be treated online. They learned how to report bad behaviour and abuse. At the end of the assembly we will be asking children to share one of the things they have learnt so please ask them who they are going to share their tip with and what it is. ●
