All Students Including First Year Students Shanghai, China (Fudan University) Electives available: Classroom based Shadowing opportunities integrated into elective Elective Fee: $1750 Visa: China Visa Details Link Accommodations: To follow. Description: This is a 4 week course in July each year that was developed in collaboration with the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. A course outline is available for interested students each year in November. This can be requested from the Global Health Program Office at [email protected]. The course is open to students in all health professional faculties. There is a focus on social determinants of health and comparative health systems analysis. There will be opportunities for shadowing in a hospital that integrates traditional Chinese medicine with allopathic medicine. Further Updates: None at this time Timing of Elective: July 2017 Tamale, Ghana (University of Development Studies) Electives available: Classroom based Possible Shadowing at the hospital Elective Fee: to be determined Visa: must be obtained prior to arrival for C$65 Accommodations: To follow. Description: This is a formal music and health promotion course developed by Dr. Michael Frishkopf, Faculty of Arts that is open to students in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. A syllabus is currently being developed. Discussions with the medical school at UDS are underway and it is anticipated that there will be opportunities to shadow in the hospital in Tamale as part of this course. Second Year Students and Residents – Clinical Experiences (INTERNATIONAL STUDENT EXCHANGE) not a field station Zhejiang University School of Medicine, Hangzhou, China Electives available: Elective of the students’ choice Elective Fee: none Visa: China Visa Details Link Accommodations: To follow. Description: Nominated students may suggest their choice of electives to the Host Institution through Dr. Joan Robinson, UME Electives Coordinator. The Host Institution has the right to change what elective is offered if the circumstances beyond their reasonable control lead to the original elective no longer being available. Further Updates: None at this time Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (St. Paul’s Hospital) Electives available: Maternal Health Elective Fee: None Visa: 1-month visa issued upon airport arrival for US$20 Accommodations: To follow. Description: This field station is based on a strong partnership with St. Paul's Hospital Millennium Medical College. There is currently a Government of Canada funded maternal, neonatal and child health project underway there with Canadian faculty regularly travelling to Addis Ababa for the project. Opportunities in obstetrics & gynecology as well as pediatrics are possible. To date, only residents have undertaken electives here. Reports from residents indicate that students they’d observed from other countries were only allowed to shadow while on rotation here. UPDATES: Currently, there is a state of emergency in Ethiopia which is set to be removed in February 2017. However, that will depend on the stability in the country improving. Learners will not be assigned to Ethiopia until it is clear that it is safe to travel there.

Description: This is a new field station that has not yet had learners from the University of Alberta. In discussions with individuals in the medical school there, it is anticipated that there will be opportunities in a number of disciplines. UPDATE: Currently, there is a state of emergency in Ethiopia which is set to be removed in February 2017. However, that will depend on the stability in the country improving. Learners will not be assigned to Ethiopia until it is clear that it is safe to travel there.

Kathmandu, Nepal (Patan Academy of Health Sciences) Electives available: General Medicine General Surgery Emergency & Out-Patient Dept Pediatrics Orthopedics Obstetrics & Gynecology Elective Fee: $US 400/month Visa: 60 day visa issued upon arrival for US$30 Accommodations: There will be contact from the lead librarian after the elective has been confirmed by the Global Health Program and Nepal. They will give suggestions on where to rent a room. Accommodation is reasonably priced, comfortable and close to the hospital. Description: In this clinical field station, students will collaborate with the Patan Academy of Health Sciences to complete medical rotations and learn about its innovative medical curriculum. Experiences of past learners at Makerere have been very positive. A recent visit by the Dean of Medicine and the Chair of Internal Medicine has underscored their interest in increasing the exchange of learners and faculty between our medical schools. Updates: None

Nairobi, Kenya (Aga Khan University) Electives available: Cardiology Family Medicine Other possibilities Elective Fee: None Visa: 3-month visa issued upon arrival for US$50/US$20 at Nairobi Airport/US$10 7day transit Accommodations: To follow. Details about the station: Students will be placed in rotations through the Aga Khan University in Nairobi. There have not been learners at the Aga Khan to date. However, a recent trip by faculty members has confirmed that there is significant interest in hosting learners from the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. Taiwan Electives available: Emergency Elective Fee: None Visa: Not required for 90 days Accommodations: To follow Description: This partnership with Chang Gung Memorial Hospital and University invites students to complete rotations in emergency medicine. It is helpful if students speak Mandarin but not imperative as both the staff physicians and Taiwanese learners know English. However, most of the patients speak only Mandarin. This is a well-organized elective that is highly rated by learners who have gone in the past. Accommodation and information about how to get to the elective are available prior to the commencement of the elective. Updates: None

Funding for International Electives All medical students are eligible for the travel bursary from the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry through the Division of Community Engagement, if the following criteria are met: 1) The student must be a current undergraduate in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry. 2) The Student will take a clinical or non-clinical elective of at least four weeks in duration. 3) The elective must be completed in a low or middle resource country outside of continental North America. 4) Consideration will only be given to students who have attended the 12-Hour Global Health Elective prior to an overseas elective (need only to take once during medical school) as well as the predeparture training. 5) An application, including a travel budget, must be submitted on or before the deadline. 6) A report in the form of a poster must be submitted upon completion of the elective at the Global Health Fair (January). Amounts vary from year to year. Students are also encouraged to explore funding opportunities through UAI: https://www.ualberta.ca/why-ualberta/international/go-abroad
