Subject matter includes, but are not limited to, graphical interfaces that include notifications that do not impede in-use applications. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Smartphones have become ubiquitous in today’s world, 72% of US citizens and 43% of the world own them.1 However, growth in smartphone adoption comes with an increase in notifications, calls, and messaging, which can quickly overwhelm users. The Google Interactive Notification portfolio contains twelve (12) patent families that broadly relate to graphical interfaces and notifications that do not impede in-use applications. There is a direct correlation between the number of applications downloaded and the number of push notifications the user receives. As the number of notifications increases from 1 to 10, users become overwhelmed and are half as likely to open the push notification.2 This causes lower interaction with applications, the opposite and undesired effect of a notification. To mitigate this problem, there is a need for interactive notifications. For example, one patent in this portfolio describes a method of using a portion of the graphic user interface display to provide information to the user without disrupting an application in progress. This method is implemented with the help of applications running in the background, which nearly all smartphones do. For example, interactive messaging notifications allow the user to quickly reply to text messages or emails without having to leave the current in-use application, making the notification more helpful.

The patents in this portfolio broadly cover Interactive Notifications targeted at both the businessprofessional and the mass-market consumer. As relevant as this portfolio of patents is today, the advances in these technologies will ensure that they will only gain in market relevancy.

FEATURED PATENT – FAMILY 1 US 7,289,772 – Technique allowing a status bar user response on a portable device graphic user interface Priority Date: 01/16/2001 Description: Nearly all smartphones can run applications in the background, meaning the applications are not the focus on the screen, but are still running. This feature enables the phone to push application specific notifications to the user, regardless of what application is currently in use. Many times, when the user receives the notification, they must leave their current application and open a different one to act on the push notification. This patent describes a method of using a portion of the graphic user interface display to provide information to the user without disrupting an application in progress. Users can now interact with the notification, such as responding to a text message, without leaving their current application, saving time and frustration.

Representative Claim: 1. A method for implementing a graphic user interface for an electronic device, comprising the steps of: a) rendering an image of a graphical user interface on a display screen, said graphical user interface comprising a first display for displaying an application and a second display for displaying a status bar, wherein said first display region and said second display region are displayed concurrently; b) receiving input comprising information relating to an event, wherein said event is unrelated to said application in operation in said first display of said graphical user interface; c) displaying an indication of said information in said status bar of said graphic user interface and also in response to said event displaying a graphical interface tool in said status bar that provides to a user a selection with respect to said event; and, d) taking an action with respect to said event, wherein said action is responsive to said selection from said user, said selection comprising a command related to the disposition of said event; wherein steps a)-d) are performed while said application is operating and without interfering with said other application.
