1 Introduction This document describes how to install using the personalised myPrint PPD on a Linux distribution using the CUPS printing system.

1.1 Tested Linux Operating systems Following Linux operating systems are tested: • •

Fedora 20 Ubuntu 14.04 LTS

1.2 CUPS “CUPS (formerly an acronym for Common Unix Printing System) is a modular printing system for Linux computer operating systems which allows a Linux computer to install printers and send print jobs to remote systems” (Wikipedia). CUPS consists of a print spooler and scheduler, a filter system that converts the print data to a format that the printer will understand, and a backend system that sends this data to the print device. CUPS uses the Internet Printing Protocol (IPP) as the basis for managing print jobs and queues. A user can install a printer by using the PostScript Printer Description (PPD) file downloadable from the myPrint web portal after login. This myPrint PPD is personalised with the myPrint users corresponding unique myPrint ID. A mechanism used by myPrint to recognise the correct myPrint print job owner. Remark: It is possible to request a new unique myPrint ID. In this case you need to download the new myPrint PPD from the myPrint web portal holding the new requested unique myPrint ID. Print jobs printed using the old Linux myPrint printer is flushed on the myPrint server due to a non-existing myPrint ID. This behaviour is as designed.

1.3 Linux printing not always guaranteed Ricoh myPrint is using IPP printing running on a Windows Server platform. Unfortunately Microsoft only implemented the experimental IPP/1.0 and it did not implement that completely correct. This may result in a print error. The IPP daemon running on the Windows server does update the job completion correctly. This may result in a printer error on the Linux side stating “Processing – Waiting for job to complete”. However, usually the print jobs are printed and arrive correctly in myPrint. This problem has been addressed at www.cups.org. Unfortunately www.cups.org cannot solve this problem due to the fact that Linux distros like Ubuntu use CUPS with third party patches. The only way to solve this problem is to ask the Linux distributor to change how the printer-statemessage at the end of the job is updated.
