NEWS FROM CAMPUS DIRECTOR'S FAREWELL

Dr. Ashoke. K. Dutta, the Director of IIM Shillong bid farewell to the office on the 16th of July 2012, after completing tenure of four years as the first Director of this prestigious institute. It was a moment which brought about mixed feelings for the whole of the IIM family as its founding member bid adieu to the institute. In his address, Dr. Dutta recalled the initial days of this institute with the students of the first few batches. He also acknowledged their contribution in bringing IIM, Shillong to the platform it is at today. Dr. Keya SenGupta has been appointed as the director-in-charge of IIM, Shillong. As a tribute to the college and the family of IIM Shillong, Mrs. Dutta shared a poem that she had written. The poem which she dedicated to all the students and administrators of the institute has been attached as below. To all those who made my life at Shillong worry free. From a faraway land that I come, where din and bustle of city life is all pervasive, this wonderful land of yours with mountains all around tranquilized me with calm and serenity. Your simplicity and warmth has mesmerized me. I would have been incapable of fulfilling all my commitments without your constant support, love and concern. I was charmed by your sincerity and devotion. Your cool and peace loving nature has me surprised. The basic value of your life has made me spellbound. So simple, so divine and yet so difficult to achieve. You have opened your heart and were eager to help. It is a wonderful experience that I never had nor will I ever forget. I could not have ever complete task that brought me here, Were you, my friend not here. If ever I was harsh, it is because of my increasing expectations and problems cropping elsewhere. At a time, when I leave this wonderful place, I feel so sad not just because I am leaving this beautiful place, but more because I will miss your company. I will not be able to see your smiling faces. You are too good. Take care friends.

What went into the building of the Scholar's Pathway? It was around September 2012 that we got an eco-friendly shelter for the pathway from the Administrative building to the hostel blocks. It was different and the B-School teams that visited our campus for Emerge felt the same. As a first year participant, we were told that the pathway was the result of the efforts put in by our seniors. We were not inquisitive enough to find out who initiated this, why this pathway was required at the first place and what were the hurdles faced by the students in bringing this up. All this changed during one of the interactions with the alumni – Mr. Neeraj Sharma. The following is an intercept of the interaction after exchanging the initial pleasantries,

We were told that you were instrumental in setting up the pathway, can you please elaborate more on that. How it all started? rd

Our batch, the first batch of IIM Shillong, started on July 3 2008. We were welcomed by heavy rains of the North East. We were asked by the Administration to arrange for umbrellas to help us in our way to classes that took place in the adminstration block. As everyone used to carry an umbrella to the class, the scene around the classrooms was not good. I came up with an initial design of how the shelter should look like and put it up on the notice board. Many ideas poured in and one among those was that of Mohit Khemka's who came up with the idea of Bamboo Mat Corrugated Sheet (BMCS) that went well with our institute's motto of Sustainability as the sheet was eco-friendly. We prepared a report and submitted it to the then Director Mr. Ashoke K Dutta. This was how the whole idea was initiated.

As you told, you submitted a report to the Director in August 2008. But the pathway came up in September 2012. Why was there so much delay in implementing it? Director approved our report as even he felt the need for such a shelter. But IIM Shillong did not have the financial resources to fund the project. So we approached many departments – North East Council, Forest department and National Mission on Bamboo Applications (NMBA). I remember going to these departments after every day after the classes and each day I got a tipoff of whom to approach. Finally, with the help of Colonel Ghosh we got the project sanctioned by NMBA. NMBA was ready to bear the cost of the project along with the forest department. IIM Shillong took the responsibility of setting up the Rainwater harvesting along the path. The funding for the project, to the tune of 14 lakh, was sanctioned in installments after the initial report was submitted. Even after all this, a committee of Executive engineer of our institute and other consultants rejected the project citing the structure to be dangerous as it was prone to fire hazards. This setback the project by a few days till the director intervened to sort out the issues. By the time I graduated from the institute in 2012, the cheque of 14 lakh had been handed over to the institute and the only work that was left was that of finding the right contractor and finishing the process. I was in constant touch with Prof. Natalie and Prof. Majumdar who made sure that the project was completed.

So, how do you feel now that your idea has go to see the daylight? Yes, it feels great. Being the first batch on campus we started off a lot of projects. By doing this project of building a shelter using bamboo, 67% of the bamboo used in our country comes from North East, and BMCS, we wanted it be an example of how innovative ideas can lead to a sustainable solution. We wanted corporates, B-School students and other people who visited our institute to notice it and implement it in other parts of the country. The only regret that I have is the attention it got from our own institute. There should be a plank highlighting the tie up of our institute and NMBA considering the amount of effort that they put in. It should have been opened in a formal way with some media attention too.

Thank you sir, for your valuable insights. We never felt so much went into building the pathway. It indeed is worth is its name – Scholar's Pathway. We are proud to have alumni with so much attachment with the institute. We will make sure that the institute sets many more examples for others to follow.

CELEBRATIONS JANMASHTAMI Give us a reason to celebrate and we at IIM Shillong do so with full fervor. Janmashtami was a cherished gift – an extended weekend after a hectic week, a chance to soak in the spirit of the festival, to cheer for the batch. The attraction of the day was inevitably the 'matki phodd'. For some it was the first live experience, for the experienced, an opportunity to showcase their superior balancing skills. Excitement ran high with both the batches trying to outdo each other amidst cheers and in the end neither of the two 'matkis' survived their fate. The continuous splashing of water on each other the entire time, unrestrained voices and the cameras clicking at a mad pace made Janmashtami, celebrated for the first time in the campus, one of the most awaited events in years to come. SPORTS @ IIM SHILLONG Kopda Cup, the most awaited sports event of IIM Shillong is already abuzz in the college, as the guys have started profiling for the auctioning, while girls are critically analyzing the performances in Kurukshetra to choose the best out of the available lot for the Kopda Cup. Junkyard Dawgs, the winners among the eight participating teams of last year are ready to come out of their complacency and preparing to embark on the coveted title once again. Girls are in no way behind their preparation schedules, as girls matches were inducted into the Kopda Cup last year. The second season of KURUKSHETRA, the senior inter floor cricket tournament, kick started on 10 August, 2012. The tournament was the brainchild of our seniors from PGP10 and the tradition is being carried forward with fervidness by the junior batches. The intra-college sports tournament Rannbhoomi is scheduled to be organized in October. Those passionate about Table-tennis, badminton and chess can be seen sweating out their bodies and brains in the wee hours to prepare for the challenge.

OTHER ACTIVITIES The campus was a different sight on the Independence Day with students clad in traditional attires to attend the flag hoisting ceremony. Anniversary celebration of the PGP11 batch was done in June, when they returned to join the campus after their summer internships. Studying at IIM Shillong rewards you with a PGDM, but it is different from other IIMs. Studying at this place gives an opportunity to live in one of the most heavenly places on earth. The trips to places of scenic beauty are indispensable for the PGP participants. Regular trips to Cherrapunji, Amlarem, David Scott'strail, Mawsynram, Living roots bridge etc.

SNEAK PEEKS INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW BATCH The PGP batch of 2012 of IIM Shillong aptly defines diversity in true terms. The batch comprises of 110 students. More than half of the batch has participants belonging to the age group of 22-24 years. More than 85% of the batch consists of engineers. However, that does not mean a complete absence of students from other backgrounds. Students from Commerce, Arts, Sciences and Humanities bring in new and different perspectives to the classroom, enriching the process of peer learning. The percentage of people with prior work experience is slightly higher than the people having no formal work experience, with the majority of them having a work experience of less than two years. TO THE WORLD OF SACRED LANDS Mawphlang, the sacred forest of Meghalaya has in stock many old stories in it to which PGP12 had visited to unravel. The trip to the sacred forest not only included the amazing experience with the batch mates but also with the nature. The valleys and the falls showed the eternal beauty of the Shillong region. The rainforest was the only one in itself which made the students realize the importance of nature and the importance to preserve it. The sounds of the blowing winds, the chirping birds and the flowing water still echo in our minds. Thus the trip had an impactful impact on the students which will definitely is required in the emerging generation towards their surroundings and nature. Inauguration of the new batch It was another step forward in IIM Shillong when the 5th Batch of the institute was inaugurated. The inauguration function took place on the 7th July 2012. The proceedings took place in the august presence of the honorable Governor of Chhattisgarh, Shri. Shekhar Dutt. Prof. Sanjeeb Kakotyalso shared his experience about the Rio 50-20 conference. The new batch of 110 participants were administered the oath by the Chairperson of PGP. The program concluded with the address of vote of thanks by the Chief Administration Officer, Mr. C. Saxena. SUBWAY The students of IIM Shillong no longer dig their teeth in the cheesy, crispy dominos pizzas; they are now taking the highway to health. Ever since Subway came to town, the taste buds and health were catered alike. And with the recent add-on, “Campus Delivery” they have become everyone's favorite. Though treats are still incomplete without that cheesy delight (Pizzas), Subway is catching up fast and catching up good. Subway is definitely the new way!!! CHERRAPUNJI TRIP After the 1st End Term exams ended, the Stalwarts finally made their legacy trip to Cherrapunji. Truly amazed by the enthralling splendor of the place we made visit to the major scenic spots which included Nohkalikai Waterfalls, Eco-Park, Thangkharang Park, Mawsmai Cave and Seven Sisters Falls, along with breathtaking beauty all through the way from Shillong to Cherrapunji and back. The Trip was one of its own kind and even now, just the thought of it fills all of us with great pleasure and excitement.

A FRESH EXPERIENCE Ernesto Dhileeban (PGP 2012-14) We dream a lot. Sometimes when that dream becomes a reality we don't know how to react. It was one such moment when my long dream of an IIM career became a reality and I was overwhelmingly joyous. I have heard about life in an IIM and also have read about it in Chetan Bhagat's books before coming here. But I tell you something, the things I heard were just myths and the books I read missed a lot of minute details, which are the real soul of IIM life. To be true to you, my journey in IIM started with a week of complete insaneness!! I couldn't find out what was happening to me, as well as around me. All day knowledge sessions, late night presentations and overnight assignments – every bit of happening was new to me. Every day I slept after the sunrise that too for a maximum of three hours and some days it was even worse. . If you want to learn how to dress up quickly in a suit ask an IIM student, he/she will be the best teacher for you in that matter. But in a week's time I was accustomed to this new environment. My eyes opened up to see the beauty of Shillong and my nostrils breathed in fresh air, for it gave me an immense strength. I began interacting with my seniors who inbuilt in me a lot of enthusiasm and energy. On the whole, I started to enjoy my new lease of life in a place 3000 km away from home. The second week was even more special. The foundation course on Sustainability (Uniqueness of IIM Shillong) gave me a wide outlook of the society and environment and also about the corporates and their roles towards building up a society. With lots of expectation in my mind, my course began. All my facilitators outclassed my expectations with their splendid lectures. I started realizing the effectiveness of peer learning and the importance of group assignments where numerous information and thoughts kept piling up every now and then. I attended all guest lectures and video conferences of that week which provoked my thoughts to become a successful entrepreneur. I got even some time to relax and show my football skills. Every Saturday morning I, along with my seniors and classmates form teams and play football for hours in the ground. It not only produced a nice game but also great interactions with my seniors. We had an outing where we booked the entire theatre for the movie 'Dark Knight Rises' and whole of my college saw the epic movie in a grand style. We also had a trip to Shillong peak (one of the most beautiful places to visit) and Elephant falls. Thus the first 30 days in IIM Shillong gave me everything from extreme excitation and happiness to the opposite extremes. It was a mix of feelings, but at the end of the month it makes me to tell WooooooW

BURNING THE MIDNIGHT OIL V Ramprasad

B School nights are the ones that are much talked about among the CAT aspirants. This was one such night with loads of work to do - pre-reading for Accounting and Corporate Finance being just two of them. I came back to my room after having dinner at Munchies that opened recently near the campus. Finally we were able to make a choice between hostel food and a fast food center without having to take a long ride. After finishing the routine of checking my mails, I got down to understanding the behavior of cost. Just when I felt I will be able to sail through without having to toil throughout the night, my phone buzzed - my first delight, as I had at last configured Outlook properly in my mobile. The message that I got was even more exciting as the mail announced me as one of the winners of the first competition in the series of Google Plus Social Engagements. Three IIM Shillong students are carrying out a massive campaign to bring everyone related to the institute into the Google+ loop. Another bomb dropped in my inbox – War of Brands, considered as the new version of Godsellers. This time the Marketing Club had stretched it to 8-10 days with the first task being assigned to the participants on 14th Oct 2012. As I came back to my “cost”, I started contemplating on finance as a career. An interaction with one of the Alumni, Vivek Priyadarshi was scheduled for the next day. I had lots of doubts and apprehensions and that interaction seemed to be the best platform to clear those doubts and gain some confidence. The only extra knowledge I had gained in the field of finance was through FLIP. The trend of finance aspirants continued in IIM Shillong as close to 50 Stalwarts had appeared for FLIP. By the time I was free from my distractions, it was 4 am. There was a windfall from then on and as usual, it didn't take a lot of time for sleep to set in. The next moment I got back to my senses, there was the usual chaos of wing mates getting ready for class. It took a second or two for me to realize that I had had a good night's sleep and had done everything the previous night except what I set out to do. Story of my Life!
