2017 Islesboro Historical Society Scholarship Application Supporting Islesboro Central School students in their pursuit of academic excellence at post-secondary institutions of higher learning across the United States. The Islesboro Historical Society will award a scholarship to an Islesboro Central School graduating student who pursues further education at the post-secondary level. Our goal is to encourage and support superior academics in an island setting by assisting graduates in the further pursuit of their educational goals. We believe such a program will help foster a lifelong interest in that special place called “Islesboro.”

Eligibility Requirements Applicants must be attending post-secondary education at a two-year or four-year college, university or vocational/technical institution and be graduates of Islesboro Central School. Attendance at such school must begin no later than the fall semester following graduation. Award IHS will grant one $1,000 scholarship to one graduating high school senior only. This award is to be applied to the second semester of post-secondary tuition. The winner of this scholarship will be a graduate who exemplifies academic excellence and the positive attitude and ambition required to succeed. This scholarship requires an essay/personal statement, three letters of recommendation and grade transcript. Decision Process Award decisions will be based on academic achievement including an excellence in history, the personal statement, letters of recommendation and special circumstances. Also considered: leadership in projects and extracurricular involvement. The Islesboro Historical Society reserves the right to determine how best to balance these criteria when evaluating applications. The Islesboro Historical Society Scholarship Committee will make award decisions. All decisions are final. Deadline All applications, including grade transcripts, must be submitted no later than April 1, 2017. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that all required items are submitted on time. Incomplete applications or those submitted after April 1 will not be processed. All information will be treated as confidential. Award winners will be notified no later than May 31. Each award will be mailed to the post-secondary school in December. Awards cannot be deferred for any period of time. Checks will be made payable to the school and applied to second semester expenses. Three Letters of Recommendation You must provide three letters of recommendation. Letters should provide examples of solid academic achievement as well as leadership in projects, extracurricular involvement or other factors the writer feels are relevant to your success in postsecondary education. The letters should be from faculty or staff members at Islesboro Central School. One of the letters may be from a recent employer or family friend (not family member). Letters must be dated after January 1, 2017, on official letterhead (except for family friend), contain your first and last name, and be signed by the writer. INFORMATION BULLETIN 2017 Islesboro Historical Society Continuing Scholarship Supporting Islesboro Central School graduates in their continuing pursuit of academic excellence at post-secondary institutions of higher learning across the United States.

Continuing Scholarships The Islesboro Historical Society voted in 2016 to extend our scholarship assistance beginning with the 2016 scholarship recipient and beyond. The continuing scholarship award will be $1,000 for each of three additional years. We will award these additional scholarships by August 15 of each year, payable to the educational institution in late August of each year. The awards are conditioned upon the program’s approval by the Islesboro Historical Society Board of Directors in July of each year. Requirements  The student must have been a recipient of an Islesboro Historical Society Scholarship in his/her senior year at Islesboro Central School.  The student must continue his/her education at the post-secondary level without interruption (excluding normal breaks between semesters).  The student should maintain a 2.5 or better grade point average, based on a four point scale or the corresponding average on the scale used at the institution.  The applicant must be taking a course load leading to a degree or graduation within the normal time period for that degree or that program. Application  The Islesboro Historical Society must receive the completed one page Continuing Scholarship Application postmarked by July 15 of each year.  The applicant must submit a copy of the grade transcript to date with the application.  The school or applicant must provide a current official “evidence of continuation” (also called “verification of enrollment”) for the fall semester to the Islesboro Historical Society.  Students who transfer to another post-secondary institution will be considered for the Continuing Scholarship if the Application and required supporting documentation are provided.  The student must repeat this process for each additional year a scholarship is desired. Timetable  Islesboro Historical Society will provide the student with the Continuing Scholarship Application upon the student’s request prior to July 1 each year. Completed application submission deadline: postmarked by July 15 each year. Continuing scholarship winners will be notified on or about August 20 of each year. Scholarship applicants will be notified immediately if the Board of Directors does not approve the program for a given year.

Decision Process Award decisions will be based on academic achievement. Also considered: any special circumstances.
