IDS Data Server in AWS Setup Benefits: • Your server will be “close” to the AWS-‐based IDS catalog servers • If you don’t already use AWS, your costs could stay within the free usage Der – hEp://aws.amazon.com/free/
Prerequisites: • Have an AWS account
– sign up at hEp://aws.amazon.com
• Have an INCF user name
– register at hEp://incf.org
This is the main AWS management console. Press the “Services” buEon on the top-‐leQ corner to expand a list of the services that can be managed through the console. If it is not selected already, press the icon for “EC2” to go to the EC2 management screen.
AWS provides resources in different “regions”. Select a region for your data server that is closest to: Ireland, N. Virginia, Oregon or Tokyo (locaDons of the main IDS servers). I’ll be using “US West (Oregon)”.
On the EC2 management screen, select “Key Pairs” on the leQ. Press “Create Key Pair” and give your new key pair a name. Important: aQer creaDng the key pair, it will be downloaded to your machine (e.g. “ids-‐csmith.pem”). Save the file! There is no copy!
Press the “Services” buEon again, and this Dme select “CloudFormaDon”. Using the “Region” drop-‐down in the top-‐leQ of the screen, select the same AWS region where you created your key pair. AQer you’ve done that, press “Create New Stack”.
Fill in the fields in the dialog box. “Stack Name” can be whatever you want, but it’s beneficial to be descripDve. The “Template URL” must match the region you’ve selected. It looks like: hEp://region.s3.amazonaws.com/ids-‐dataserver-‐template.cf where “region” is “eu-‐west-‐1” (Ireland), “us-‐east-‐1” (Virginia), “us-‐west-‐2” (Oregon) or “ap-‐northeast-‐1” (Tokyo). Click “ConDnue” when done.
Fill in the rest of the parameters. “INCFUserName” is the one you used when you registered at the INCF web site. “DataVolumeSize” is how much space you want your data server to have aEached. “KeyName” is the name of the key pair you previously created. Important: in AWS you get charged for space! Make sure and stay within the free Der, or you will be charged!
Great! You should see something like the screen above. Click on your stack to see the details. Now it’s waiDng Dme. “CREATE_IN_PROGRESS” means things are sDll geeng started.
If you want to see what’s going on, select the “Events” tab. You might need to click one or both of the “Refresh” buEons occasionally to see things changing.
AQer a while, and aQer a refresh using the buEon in the upper-‐right corner, you will see “CREATE_COMPLETE”. The final step is to email ids-‐
[email protected] and provide your INCF user name and the PublicDNS name of your new IDS data server. When you get an email back, you will now be able to store things in your IDS home collecDon!
