1 Welcome to Idea Street

return to contents

Introduction  Idea Street provides DWP employees with a way to contribute new ideas to various targeted categories created for the community. Ideas can be evolved, teams can be built around them, and users can review and assess them. Each idea goes through a series of stages, where it is required to meet minimum requirements to graduate to the next stage. During the last stage, an Idea Street investment board decides whether to take it forward or not. [email protected] If you have any questions about Idea Street, please email [email protected].

2 Post an Idea

return to contents

Do you have an idea? Click the “post an idea” link to get started with your idea.

The "post an idea” button can be found on the “All Ideas” page and on all category homepages. Once you have clicked on “post an idea”, simply fill in the required fields on the screen (ensuring you select the most relevant Category). After submitting your idea, you can always go back and edit your idea and improve it based on community feedback. Think of your idea as a living document. This is especially important when you receive suggestions or negative feedback and need to change or update your idea.

Using the Editor Using the rich text editor when posting your idea allows you to have more flexibility in how your idea displays. The top tab bar of the editor allows you to format your post, insert hyperlinks, insert images and video as well as paste text from Microsoft Word.

It is important to use the paste from Word icon if you are copying and pasting text from Word, so that the browser can properly read the text. To do this, click the paste from Word icon.

This will open a separate window where you can paste your text from Word. Copy what you want to add to the editor in Word, and then paste it into the window shown below and hit “Insert.”

If the upload is successful, you should see a link in the “Documents” widget showing the document title or file name. You can make documents viewable only to users with certain roles (e.g. team member, expert, or moderator) within the community. Amend this by clicking on the padlock next to the document name.

Inviting Team Members As an idea owner, you can choose to invite team members to your idea. Other users who have similar interests can request to join as team members of your idea. Each idea will need at least 5 team members to progress from the “Teaming” to the “Investment time” stage. To invite team members, click the “recruit” link on your idea’s homepage, and then enter the name of the users who you think would make a good team member. You have up to 1000 preference shares in your idea to offer to other users to motivate them to promote and collaborate on your idea.

Build a reputation return to contents

Your reputation You earn a reputation based on your actions. Your reputation is directly correlated to your contributions, the feedback you receive, and the overall perception of the community of your contribution quality. Your reputation value can dramatically affect the outcome of different events as they relate to your earnings, status, and the results surrounding other outcomes and events where you directly (and indirectly) participate. The higher your reputation, the more impact you will have on the outcome of events.

Increasing your reputation If you continuously receive good feedback, have a good following of quality users who constantly engage with you, and have generally positive indicators around your membership, your reputation will be very high.

Decreasing your reputation If you do not contribute meaningfully, if you consistently post spam, if you don’t engage productively and produce good contributions, your reputation in turn will be very low.

The Idea lifecycle return to contents

There are three stages in the idea lifecycle: Buzz, Teaming, and Investment Time. In each stage, ideas must reach certain graduation thresholds before it can graduate to the next stage. The graduation criteria may be altered depending on the number of users in Idea Street.

1. Buzz When the idea is entered on the system, it is automatically in the first stage called Buzz. Buzz This is when the community first provides their assessment of the ideas. It’s this assessment that determines whether the idea advances to the next stage. Users must create a “buzz” around their idea before it can progress. The criteria to advance from the Buzz stage to the Teaming stage are set relatively low, but at a level sufficient to filter out ideas with little chance of being implemented. In Buzz, there are four graduation tasks to be met within 45 days. Buzz Percentile [measures the amount of activity around an idea] Approval Rating [a rating of the ideas based on votes] Vote Count [number of votes] Qualified Page Views [number of page views. A user can have at most 1 page view for an idea every 15 minutes]

30% 30% 10 50

2. Teaming If the idea has met all the graduation criteria in the Buzz Stage it will automatically move to the Teaming stage. In this stage, the idea proposer needs to build a team of supporters around their idea before it can graduate to the Investment Time stage. In Teaming, there are seven graduation tasks to be met within 45 days. 30% 5 30% 5

Approval rating Team size Buzz percentile Conversation level [the number of conversations (comments between at least two people) on the idea] Number of posts [the number of comments] Qualified page views Rating [a reputation-weighted aggregate rating for each idea based on promote/demote votes and reviews posted on the idea]

5 100 3.0

3. Investment Time If the idea meets all the graduation criteria in the Teaming stage it will automatically be moved to the Investment Time stage, where you can begin to invest and trade in the idea. In the Investment Time stage, the Idea Market becomes the primary basis for valuing an idea. Whilst the idea is in the Investment Time stage an investment board will make a decision on the feasibility of the idea and either graduate the idea for implementation or archive it in the platform.

13

Trade shares return to contents

Users can buy shares in ideas in the Investment Time stage. stage The initial price per share for an idea is determined by its strength in the prior stages. After going “public” on the Idea Market, shares of the idea can be bought and sold by employees. The buying and selling affects the share price of each idea.

Team member shares If you are invited to be a team member on an idea, you will be offered a portion of preferred stock in reward for supporting both the idea and the idea Creator. The idea owner starts with 1000 preferred shares which can be divvied up amongst the team members. The owner can keep some as well. Preferred shares are given as an incentive for the team members to help improve the idea. If the idea exits successfully, then all users are paid out based on their stock holdings.

Trading You can invest in the ideas in the Investment Time stage with your currency. The Idea Market functions much like a stock market. Employees buy and sell shares of ideas. Each employee can invest in any of the ideas based on how much currency they have earned in the system. You should buy into ideas which you like and believe can be implemented. You receive a payout of 100 points per share invested in any idea that graduates successfully. The buying and selling provide a signal into what ideas are capturing interest and what would be feasible to move forward with. You can see the trading summary on any idea page in the Investment Time stage by clicking “Share Summary”.

The initial share price for an idea is generated from an algorithm that takes into account the various metrics described in the previous section.

Payoff At some point after the idea has graduated to the Investment Time stage, a DWP investment board will decide to close an idea. At closing, they will indicate whether the idea has graduated through the platform successfully. If an idea has graduated successfully, shareholders will receive a payoff of 100 units of currency per share in the idea. It will also positively affect the reputation of those shareholders. If unsuccessful, shareholders will receive zero units of currency and their reputations will be negatively affected.
