Huskie Howl Summer 2016

Albany Area Schools Community Newsletter

District, Community Break Ground On April 28 and 29, Albany Area Schools celebrated the official groundbreaking for the district’s facilties projects that were overwhelmingly approved by community voters last August. The ceremonies at Albany Area High School on April 28 and Albany Elementary School on April 29 — complete with gold shovels and speeches by community and district leaders — were attended by students, staff, community members, and local businesses. In an article in the Albany Enterprise, Albany Area Board Chair Don Winkels said, “It’s been an exciting journey and most importantly, these new facilities will enhance opportunities for all [students].”

From the

District

A lot has happened this past year. We could not have imagined starting our school year any better. It began with the passage of our building project referendum in August and now the transformation has begun at all of our sites. The heart of what we do in our schools is about people; however, expanded and improved facilities will have a lasting impact on the quality of our programming. This school year ended with an exceptional class of 130 seniors moving ahead to the next phase of their lives. They will soon be replaced with an excited group of juniors and another new batch of kindergartners. It is hard to compare anything to the amount of change that takes place in our schools. Welcome to the first edition of the Huskie Howl. This first edition will be an update to the latest with our facility project and beginning in September, we will send you quarterly updates. We will use the same format for all Huskie Howl newsletters and parents and families will receive monthly updates from each of our buildings.

Welcome to the first edition of the Huskie Howl!

I am proud of the work of our 1,700 students and 270 staff members and we will use the Huskie Howl to showcase their work and provide you with district updates. “Dramatically improving communication and outreach” is a goal of our school board and we hope the Huskie Howl moves us a step closer to achieving this goal. As I begin my third year in Albany Area Schools, I am thankful to have met many of the amazing people who make up our school district. The communities of Albany, Avon, St. Martin, Farming, and St. Anthony are a wonderful place to call home.

Learning Commons: The new, innovative Albany Area High School and Middle School Learning Commons will provide much-needed space for student collaboration and resources. Here students can find a quiet place to read or work individually, or use one of the four collaboration spaces to work with classmates. Adjoining the new learning commons, an open student commons will provide additional space for students to gather. Science Labs: The new science labs (in the current science area and district office space) will feature lab and teaching space in the same classroom. Current labs are small and outdated with four teachers sharing a single lab. The new science labs will present new, exciting opportunities for our high school students and science teachers.

CATE (Career, Agricultural, & Technical Education) Area: The CATE area features both a renovation of the current wood shop and welding stations (not shown). The new, added CATE space includes an auto shop, computer lab, and classroom space, exciting changes that will also serve to support the high school’s new Work-Based Learning program.

Grade 6 Addition: This expansion includes six 6th grade classrooms with restrooms and small group work stations. By adding 6th grade to our current junior high, we can move to a dynamic middle school model for grades 6-8 and also free-up needed space in both our elementary schools. This new space will allow for preschool and kindergarten programs to be offered in both the Avon Elementary and Albany Elementary schools.

Security:

Student safety and security is our school district’s and community’s top priority, which is why Albany Area Schools will be making a number of facilities improvements in this regard. With valuable input from our police chiefs and School Resource Officer (SRO), these improvements are being made: • Locked main entrances at all school sites • Modern visitor management systems at all school sites • Additional security cameras at all school sites

SUMMER 2016

Albany Area Schools is fortunate to have the generous support of its community members and local businesses. Last summer, Blattner Energy, an Avon-based power generation contractor and leading provider of renewable energy construction in North America, announced it would donate $5 million to Albany Area Schools’ facilities expansion and renovation plans. Stearns Bank and Albany Mutual Telephone each contributed $500,000 with other donations from Wells Concrete, Central MN Credit Union, and an anonymous community member. As a result, the Albany Area School Board made the decision to name select portions of the district’s facilities after these organizations as a way of showing our deep appreciation for their contributions to the overall project
