Human Pathogens Journal Club Winter 2015 Meeting information: Room: 3rd Floor Conference Room in Hewitt Hall Day & Time: Fri 2:00 - 3:00pm Format: Each week a group of students will select an article of a given topic, present it during class, and facilitate an interactive discussion. Students will function in a different role each week within their group. Every quarter the journal club will have a different theme in human pathogens. This quarter’s theme is malaria. Learning objectives:         

Students will be able to identify key points from original journal articles. Students will be able to summarize journal articles in their own words. Students will be able to interpret data in figures and tables. Students will be able to draw their own conclusions from data in figures and tables. Students will be able to critically evaluate journal articles. Students will be able to present scientific literature. Students will be able to formulate discussion questions. Students will be able to participate in academic discourse regarding malaria research Students will be able to make connections between individual lab research to broader body of research.

Expectations for facilitators: 1. Provide a safe and comfortable classroom environment. 2. Distribute selected journal article by Monday of the week being presented. 3. Serve as a resource for students when selecting journal articles and preparing presentations.

Expectations for participants: 1. Attend at least eight sessions. 2. Fulfill assigned roles for the quarter. 3. Send journal article to Liz ([email protected]) at least seven days prior to presenting for approval and distribution. 4. Read journal articles and prepare before coming to class. 5. Bring two discussion questions on days with no assigned role. 6. Actively participate in discussions.
