General Guidelines for Hang Seng Management College Anthem Lyrics Competition 恒生管理學院校歌歌詞材料徵集比賽章程 1.

Background of the Competition Established in 2010, Hang Seng Management College (HSMC) aspires to becoming a leading non-profit-making private university in Hong Kong with its special historical background of restructuring from its successful predecessor Hang Seng School of Commerce (HSSC). Great strides have recently been made towards paving the way of achieving our aspiration in hardware and the academic status, respectively, on the completion of major campus expansion plan with the Residential Colleges up and running; and the initial recommendation of acquisition of the Programme Area Accreditation (PAA) status at Qualifications Framework Level (QFL) 5 by the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (HKCAAVQ). Now is considered about the prime time to strengthen a sense of identity and a sense of belonging among the HSMC community as an “HSMCer”; to unite the HSMC community as one; and to celebrate forthcoming exciting College developments. The HSMC Anthem Lyrics Competition aims to generate collective ideas and adoptable materials from students and alumni, as well as staff, to be used in a song of HSMC to be subsequently created that will best narrate the common dream and pursuit of the HSMC community. The College song, which is considered as one of the important carriers of the College’s spirit and culture, manifests the history, tradition, core education values, vision and mission of the College.

2.

Eligibility

2.1

The Competition is open to: Group 1: currently enrolled full-time HSMC students and HSMC / HSSC alumni; and Group 2: full-time HSMC staff members.

2.2

An entry may be submitted by an eligible individual participant or a team of up to four eligible individual participants. For example, under Group 1: a team may comprise two students, a team may also comprise three alumni and one student; under Group 2: a team may comprise up to four staff members, but not student or alumni. An eligible individual participant may submit more than one entry or join more than one team under the same group.

2.3

An eligible entry should be at least 50 words, in either Chinese or English; be a new work originally written recently; and has not been awarded any prize or publicly released (including via the Internet). In case where an eligible participant or a team comprising all the same team members submitting one entry in Chinese, as well as another entry in English, it will be counted as two entries; and two separate application forms should be submitted.

2.4

Each entry should be submitted by the deadline specified under the section “Timeline of the Competition”. Each entry should include a completed application form which will not be returned to the participant.

Prizes

4.1

Group 1 - Champion: Cash prize of HK$1,000 - First runner-up: Cash prize of HK$750 - Second runner-up: Cash prize of HK$500 - Merit prizes (up to 2 winners): Cash prize of HK$250 each

4.2

Group 2 - Champion: Cash prize of HK$1,000 - First runner-up: Cash prize of HK$750 - Second runner-up: Cash prize of HK$500

5.

Judging Criteria

5.1

The judging criteria of each entry may include but not limited to the following: (a) (b) (c) (d)

Originality; Relevance for being the College’s manifesto; Creativity; and Tonality and style.

5.2

The participant(s) may be invited to present the idea of the creation or provide supplementary information if so requested by the judging panel.

5.3

The decision of the judging panel is final, inclusive of the circumstance that no award shall be made should no entry meet the expected standard. The judging panel will not entertain any appeals against its decision.

6.

Composition of the Judging Panel

6.1

The judging panel may comprise assigned representatives from HSMC staff, HSMC students, HSMC / HSSC alumni, the College’s governing bodies, and / or whoever from outside the HSMC community with relevant professional knowledge as deemed fit.

7.

Conditions of the Competition

7.1

By entering the HSMC Anthem Lyrics Competition, each participant accepts and agrees to be bound by the terms and conditions as set out hereof. Violation of any of these terms and conditions may result in disqualification of the participant(s) / winner(s) and selection of an alternate winner. In such case, prizes awarded, if any, must be returned to the Organiser.

7.2

Each entry to the Competition must not contain content that is illegal, indecent, disturbing, provocative, offensive, intrusive, defamatory, or discriminatory of race, religion, gender or age.

7.3

Each participant guarantees to the Organiser that the entry submitted by him / her does not contain any fraudulently obtained materials or other content, or any material or content that may constitute infringement on the intellectual property rights of any third party. Entries containing materials or any other content that may be, or may risk being alleged to be, fraudulent or infringing on the intellectual property rights of a third party as determined by the judging panel in the Competition will be ineligible for a prize. If the entry contains material that is not owned by the participant and / or is subject to the rights of third parties, the participant is responsible for obtaining, prior to submission of the entry, all consents necessary to permit the material’s use for the purpose of entering the Competition and in the manner as required by the judging panel, without making the Organiser and HSMC / HSSC liable in any way. The participant shall indemnify the Organiser and HSMC / HSSC for any such liability caused to the Organiser and HSMC / HSSC by any material supplied by him / her.

7.4

Each participant should read through the guidelines carefully and may make reference to the information as set out under paragraph 8 “Motto and Milestones of HSMC / HSSC”.

7.5

Each participant (and each Parental Consent in the case of a participant under 18 years of age) agrees to release, discharge and hold harmless the Organiser and HSMC / HSSC and the affiliates, subsidiaries, contractors and agents from any claim, loss and / or damage arising out of or in connection with his / her participation in this Competition.

7.6

Each participant understands that the entry may or may not be adopted either in part or in full subject to the decision of HSMC / HSSC, the Organiser, song composer, writer and / or arranger as assigned subsequently. The Organiser reserves the right to edit, paraphrase, re-word, and / or translate the entry without having to seek consent from the participant(s).

7.7

Each awardee agrees to transfer all perpetual, exclusive and irrevocable lyrics and related copyrights subsisted in and / or associated with the awarded entry(ies) (referred as “the Work” hereafter) to HSMC / HSSC and its authorized persons, including but not limited to the lyrics, audio products, the right to release, the right to perform in public, broadcast / include in a cable programme service, and the right to make available copies for access through the Internet / in any promotions or publications connected to the Competition or HSMC / HSSC. These exclusive rights are to be transferred unconditionally and at no cost to the Organiser and HSMC / HSSC, except the respective prize awarded as stipulated hereof, without making the Organiser and HSMC / HSSC liable for compensation of any kind or any other liability, and without any notice or reference to the awardee(s).

7.8

Each awardee acknowledges that his / her personal particulars as provided in the application form concerned, viz. full name in English and Chinese, his / her relation with HSMC / HSSC, programme & year of study (if student), year of graduation (if alumni), post title and organisation (if not student) may be used in promotions, publications, websites, etc, whenever and wherever the Organiser deems necessary (including the Internet) for publicity purpose without having to seek consent from the awardee(s).

7.9

Each awardee agrees that the Organiser, HSMC / HSSC and / or the authorized persons possesses the exclusive right to fine-tune, re-arrange, modify and / or re-produce the Work, as deemed necessary, without having to seek consent from the awardee(s).

7.10 The awardee(s) shall have obtained prior written approval from the Organiser and HSMC / HSSC should the awardee(s) wishes to fine-tune, re-arrange, modify and / or re-produce the Work.

7.11 All entries and information submitted will not be returned to the participants. Entries other than those winning one(s) will be properly destroyed one month after all Competition and related activities. 7.12 The awardee(s) who cannot be contacted on or before the result announcement shall be deemed to have waived their rights to the respective prize(s); and the Organiser is entitled to select an alternate winner. 7.13 The Organiser reserves the right to (a) change these terms and conditions as set out hereof without prior notice; (b) interpret the terms and conditions if not explicitly specified hereof; and (c) cancel or terminate the Competition. 7.14 In case of dispute, the decision of the Organiser shall be final and binding. 7.15 The Competition shall be subject to and governed by the laws of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

Motto and Milestones of HSMC / HSSC

8.1

Motto: Erudition and Perseverance 校訓：博學篤行 The motto which appears on the College badge means: - Develop breadth of view in learning; and - Show firmness of purpose in action. 本校校訓為「博學篤行」，語出《禮記‧中庸》「博學之，審問之，慎思之，明辨之，篤 行之」，以及《學記》「博學而不窮，篤行而不倦」二句。「博學」，意謂為學要以博大 和寬容的態度，廣泛獵取，不斷創新；「篤」意指忠實、專注、一心一意。「篤行」，意 指對事業專心致志，鍥而不捨，知難而進，勇往直前，亦包含百折不撓、愈挫愈奮之精神。 篤行強調實踐，體現知行合一，倡導學習書本知識與投身實踐之統一，並將書本知識用於 實踐，在實踐中不斷學習提高之果效。

Hang Seng Bank organised Elementary Banking Programme which led Dr S H Ho to launch a much more ambitious project, i.e. Hang Seng School of Commerce (HSSC).
