Our Community: Yorktown Heights is a suburban residential town in Westchester County, 50 miles north of New York City. Our current population is over 37,000. Yorktown Central Schools serve almost one half of this total, with the remaining group attending Lakeland District. The community has consistently supported education and strives to maintain a quality program for its children.

The enrollment in grades 9-12 is 1168 with our current senior class numbering 318. Yorktown is accredited by the New York State Board of Regents and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools.

We are committed to an educational program that promotes the intellectual, emotional and social growth of all students. We offer students a rigorous college preparatory program plus strong programs in Special Education, Business, and Occupational Education.

Curriculum and Programs All students are required to take four years of English. These courses prepare students for post-secondary study by emphasizing language usage, composition, literature, speaking and listening. English 11 students receive NYS Regents credit by taking the Regents Exam. Honors English is offered to grades 9-11. Seniors have the opportunity to enroll in Advanced Placement English, Syracuse University Project Advance (SUPA) English, English 12, or English 12 WISE (a program which develops English skills through one semester of class work and one semester of an internship interspersed with class meetings, blogs, and presentations).
English 12 is composed of semester courses which further refine students’ abilities to master reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Included in their studies are two research compositions and myriad opportunities for public speaking. The English curriculum also includes elective courses in TV Production, Journalism, Drama, and Creative Writing. The school also has a Writing Center for all students which is staffed by an English teacher and trained peer tutors. Mathematics courses are geared to match students’ abilities varying from Algebra to AP Calculus BC. All students are enrolled in the NYS integrated Regents Mathematics Program. All students must pass the NYS Algebra Regents exam. Students may be eligible for NYS assessments in Algebra, Geometry, and Algebra 2/Trigonometry.
Accelerated and Honors courses are available at each grade level. Students in this program are expected to take either AB or BC Calculus exam in their last year. The Science curriculum includes laboratory-based Earth Science, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. All are offered at the honors level. Advanced courses include AP Biology, AP Environmental Science, AP Physics C Mechanics , SUPA/AP Chemistry, and SUPA Forensics. Science electives include Science Research, Science Discovery, Forensics and Marine Biology. All Social Studies (SS) classes are designed to prepare students for the NYS Regents examination. SS 9 and 10 comprise a two-year global studies curriculum culmination with a Regents exam. SS 11 offers a traditional study of American
history, institutions, and heritage also culminating in a Regents exam. Advanced courses are available starting junior year in AP United States History, AP Politics & Government, and AP European History. SS 12 is comprised of 2 semesters of study: Economics and Senior Senate, a participatory citizenship program. Civic Internship is offered in lieu of Senior Senate. This course involves direct participation in community agencies and organizations dealing with public policy issues. Social Studies electives include American Law, Holocaust & 20th Century Genocide, 20th Century American Pop Culture, and Psychology. Business courses include AP Macroeconomics, Sports Marketing, and Web Page Design. Spanish, Latin, French, and Italian are presented at a variety of levels including college level through SUNY Albany and AP French, Italian, and Spanish. The Fine Arts department offers many electives culminating in AP Studio Art, which requires a professional portfolio. Performing Arts opportunities include Concert Band, Wind Ensemble, HS Orchestra, Chorus, and Chamber Choir, all of which are offered at the honors level. Coursework includes Music Theory, Music in Our Lives, and Drama. In order to best support students’ academic programs, Learning Center, Social Studies Skills, English Skills, Science Skills, Math Lab, and Resource Room are available. Other programs include the Alternative HS and Northern Westchester BOCES Technical Center. The community service program is available to all students, but is not required for graduation. Students who complete at least 40 hours of documented community service receive a notation on their transcripts with the hours completed. All hours are preapproved and verified by a committee, and only activities completed outside of school hours and outside of school clubs are approved. Staff Yorktown High School has 5 administrators and a faculty of 118, including specialists. 1 member has earned a Bachelors Degree, 116 have received a Masters Degree and 1 has earned a PhD.

Grading and Weighting System The transcript Grade Point Average (GPA) is unweighted and weighted. All courses (passed, failed, or repeated) are reported on the transcript and included in the GPA with the exception of Physical Education, work experience, and independent study. In determining decile placement, a weighted GPA is used. Honors classes, AP classes, and college-level courses are given additional weight (+.5). NOTE:
