Hope Arriving: Holiday Preparation Isaiah 40:1-5 Background of Isaiah. Some intriguing parallels between the book of Isaiah and the Bible as a whole. o The Bible has 66 books / Isaiah has 66 chapters. o The 39 OT books emphasize God’s holiness and warn of judgment. Isaiah chapters 1-39 warn Israel of coming judgment for their sin because God is holy. o The 27 NT books focus on the good news of Christ’s reconciliation. Isaiah’s last 27 chapters speak of God’s love for his people and the redemption that is coming. Because of the fact that it parallels the general emphasis of scripture, Isaiah has sometimes been called the miniature Bible. The book of Isaiah is also the most messianic of the prophetic books. Some of these messianic prophecies are: Isaiah 7:14; Isaiah 9:1-7; Isaiah 52:13 - 53:12. How should we prepare for the holidays? The usual holiday activities? Yes, but I would like to suggest something bigger than all of this. For some of us, a major change is in order: change that will last far beyond the Christmas season and affect the rest of our lives. The point of our text in Isaiah 40 is to prepare for life change (large and small). How? Receive God’s comfort. The Hebrew word for comfort is nachmu, meaning consolation. For people weighed down with a great burden, there can be no life-change until the burden is lifted. We can be comforted because this passage (and the whole message of the Bible) truly does promise it. Have you ever thought about how God is both righteous and gracious? People usually emphasize personally one or the other—often very imperfectly. But God is both truly righteous and amazingly gracious. Consider Psalm 85:8-11: o God’s righteousness demands that he deal with the tangled mess caused by our sin, selfcenteredness and disregard for him. o His grace motivates him to do so in a way that does not punish us forever or drive us eternally from his presence, but instead draws us near and restores us. It even goes further in making us his sons and daughters. Expect God to show up. This is the essence of Christ’s incarnation, which we are celebrating during this season. God’s righteousness and grace reach their completion with Jesus on the cross, in his resurrection and victory over death. Accept the truth that God is FOR you. In sending Christ. In working for your good (Romans 8:28). In giving you a wonderful life of purpose and blessing Take a realistic look at yourself. Repent where necessary. Strengthen what needs improvement. Continue what is pleasing to the Lord. Get ready for change: Prepare as much as you can, then relax, flex and enjoy. Make sure you have a support group. Be prepared to feel different, odd and (at times) alone. Make time for him in your BUSY schedule through prayer and exposure to scripture. Reflect before the Lord in honest interaction with what you know of him and his will. Act on what you know. Understand your purpose is to honor God and bless others.
